An amazing experience to get up close to an African elephant. Wonder what they think of us when we are so noisy and disrespectful. Wonder how any person can deliberately harm them but all these elephants are rescued from other areas. The guides are very knowledgeable and I learned more about elephants in this visit than from any other source.

Take the time and visit

Seeing an elephant up close is an amazing experience, the texture of their skin and ancient look in their eyes gives one the feeling they hold more wisdom than you'll ever know. The guides at the elephant sanctuary knew the personality of each elephant they introduced you to giving us an unique perspective about these creatures.

This is one of the nicest animal interactions i have done, Elephants are awesome. We got to feed them and interact one by one and thereafter walk them. You can also ride them. What i loved most was that the guides were friendly and helpful and let us interact at our own pace and gave us plenty of opportunities to take pics. It was an awesome experience.

We went here in May 2014, the staff are very helpful and accommodating. My mom cant walk well, and they moved everything around so she could be involved and see, and even gave us a discount on her experience.

We started with a brush down, then went on to show and tell us about an elephant. A lot of the stuff that they get the elephants to do does feel a bit like a circus with the "tricks" they do. But a lot of what they do is a natural thing, the sanctuary just gets them to do it on command. It is amazing to be able to get up close and personal with such giants. they paid special attention to my mom and everyone was there to help her while she got to see and touch and feed an elephant. The staff are extremely helpful, with them grabbing our cameras and cellphones and snapping away for us. which is a pleasure, and they sell a dvd of your experience at a late fee, we took it as it was so well done. the staff were mostly friendly an helpful as well as the guide was very informative and had a lot of knowledge. You can see that they have a passion for the elephants. The only thing i find off putting, but a lot of these places is that there is always donation boxes and guide tip boxes. Its great for the tourists but the locals it works out pricey!
Definitely recommend this awesome experience specially when you walk with the elephants truly amazing even the dusty muddy elephant kiss!

The room was luxurious and tucked away in the bush with the other units. Dinner at the boma was excellent and the closest you will get to an african experience near the city. The employees are well trained and very friendly. The sundowner experience was amazing and we had a beautiful view. I was concerned as the place where the elephants sleep is small and zoo like. The interaction was however moving and informative. This is definitely the closest you will get to an elephant. Although the sanctuary seems like a better environment than a zoo the elephants should have more opportunity to roam during the day. Hartbeespoordam Elephant sanctuary is in a beautiful bush setting but I left feeling concerned about the well being of the elephants. I am of the opinion that this is a money making project where only the owners truly benefit.
