we met with our daughter for a meal on a sunday late afternoon, mainly at that time of day, most pubs are pretty dire. however we all ate three courses from a wide choice and it was all cooked well and nicely presented. we all had different puddings and they were gorgeous!! well done. nice and polite staff as wel. we will eat there again.

This was our first stay at The Bear Inn. I was brought up the local area but moved away. We were back visiting family and my husband thought we would give it a go as the price included breakfast. All I can say it was the best thing he did. We stayed over the road in Blossom Cottages. The accommodation was lovely with a separate bathroom and sitting area with sofa. The bed was very comfortable and had a lovely night sleep. The breakfast was lovely. You could help yourself to a hot breakfast (as much as you like). It was lovely, fresh and hot. There was so much choice. This hotel was extremely good value and very welcoming.

This was our second stay at The Bear and this time we chose to stay in the main building. Last time, about three years ago, we stayed in Blossom Cottages down the road. They were fine (in fact, properly updated, could be fantastic) but the we didn't enjoy the trek to the restaurant for breakfast on cold, wet, January mornings. This time, our room was up two flights of rather narrow stairs but that was not a problem.

The twin room was spotlessly clean but smallish and fairly basic - describing it as 'superior' is stretching things a bit. The bed linen was crisp and white and the courtesy tray was well stocked. There was a wall-hung flat screen television and free wi-fi and everything worked! The window overlooked the beautiful garden which could be noisy as the weather was beautiful and people chose to eat and drink outside, but that can happen anywhere.

The bathroom was also spotless with plenty of snow white, fluffy towels and a great shower.

Breakfast was excellent, buffet style with plenty of choice of hot and cold food. We had dinner in the restaurant on each of our three nights. Great pub food, served piping hot and plenty of it. The one drawback, which hasn't changed in three years, was the delay of between 45 minutes and 1 hour between ordering and service plus a long wait afterwards if you chose to order dessert. We would order ours almost as soon as we started our main.
We were there for a swimming meet at nearby Millfield school, which meant an early start in the morning and would see several tired, young swimmers still eating at 10p.m. following a day of hard, competitive swimming and with another one to look forward to.

The staff were fantastic and I can't praise them highly enough. Every one of them was helpful, friendly and welcoming and managed to be polite and respectful even to complaining diners.

We will definitely return to The Bear in a few weeks time when we visit Millfield again.

Second visit to The Bear and chose once again to stay in Blossom Cottages across the road from the pub. Bedroom with separate bathroom and sitting area with sofa and tv handy if one wants to go to bed and the other read! Clean room and comfortable bed. Only ate breakfast in the pub but reasonable although the one staff member could have done with some help on Sunday morning as very busy Monday less manic. Help yourself hot buffet. Good value

Room Tip: Separate cottages good as away from noise of pub

We stayed at the Bear Inn for a shopping trip to Clarks village, the village shopping centre is only a short walk away. We stayed in room 17 Rose cottage which is in a row of terraced cottages next to and owned by the Inn. The room is upstairs and is a very good size, containing a king size four poster bed and a seating area, good size bathroom with nice powerful shower over the bath. Staff are very friendly and you get a decent 'help yourself' english breakfast.

Booked for one night, the room in set of Cottages, clean basic but the most uncomfortable bed ever, lumpy and lopsided, didnt sleep due to that and the boy racers whizzing past for about half an hour, I know the location is going to be noisey as its dead centre of street opposite clarkes village a shoppers dream room, but the noise was still bad due to the cottage having no double glazing, i know listed building. Breakfast cold, we were obe of the first in yet it was stone cold, eggs, bacon beans didnt complain as in a hurry. So score for room 7/10, breakfast 3/10, staff 8/10, the night before we ate in the resturant, told 35 minute wait, no problem we tought it came an hour later, ordered dessert that took 50 minutes so glad we were staying over as it would have been a long drawn out meal. If you want to do some shopping the location is ideal, would I use it again if I had to, then I would.

Room Tip: Ask not to be in top room of main building its steep.

This was our 3rd stay at The Bear and again was not disappointed. The room was clean with lovely crisp white sheets and towels, the evening meal a joy and the breakfast was delicious and great value for money.
Suggest you book a table if dining in the pub as it can get quite busy.

Room Tip: We've had 3 different twin rooms and all have been good.
