“Faulty Towers”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2013

Had a weekend break in June. The hotel was ok but a bit dated but the horror story has to be from the dining room, the food on the first night was awful and when we complained the person who dealt with us made Basil Faulty seem ok !!!! The rest of the meals for our stay were ok but nothing to write home about.

Room Tip: Eat out. Rooms get very warm.

We had rushed to our son and daughter in laws for the birth of our grandaughter and needed somewhere to stay for the night. After trying many hotels we at last found a "room at the inn" and honestly as I say would not rush to stay there again. Generally the hotel is very tired looking and the furniture in the room was in need of replacing as were the fixtures and fittings. It was a very warm evening and as our room was at the back it was lovely and quiet I must admit so we were able to leave our window open without fear of noise. After booking in and paying (unusual to have to pay prior to the stay but it is obviously the way they work) we were given our key card and proceeded to our room. The card did not work and I had to traipse all the way back down to the lobby for the clerk to validate my card again not very helpful when you have not had much sleep in the last 36 hours!!! On our windowsill in the bedroom was a air freshner (a solid block type in a plastic case with holes) I went to move this so as I could stand and look out of the window and it had been filled with a liquid hence it was layed down and not standing up as they usually are. It was a good job it was me and not a young child who did this as the liquid went everywhere and smelt awful I find this type of cost cutting when you are paying a pretty hefty sum for the room a little hard to believe!!
Breakfast the next morning which was included in the price also left a lot to be desired! Firstly we were told the wrong time as it was a Sunday and the times change slightly but we were given the Monday-Saturday times. The waiter briefly explained about the cereals, croissants etc on a table in the corner of the restaurant and then rushed off after seating us at our table. When I went to look at the selection offered I and my husband were very disappointed. There were a couple of very dried up looking croissants and one muffin a small selection of cereals and some yoghurts which had just been left on the table without any way of keeping them chilled not very clever on a very hot weekend in June! There was a toaster but the only bread available was white and at no time could I see a waiter to ask for more and for the croissants and other pastries to be replenished. There was a big party in from a coach tour in an adjoining seperate room whether they had their own cereals etc I am unsure but surely it is good customer policy to keep an eye on stocks on self serve tables and make sure there is enough provided for the customers expected. I will certainly not be staying here again sorry.

This hotel is like a sitcom crossed between Faulty towers and crossroads, the staff range from surprisingly good to laughingly awful, breakfast was so bad it was the highlight of the stay. We were moved twice before they found the correct room for us, and although it was very tired it was better than the first two they put us in, one was so small that you could only get out one side of the double bed and not try to stand up at the same time as there wasn't room for two on the carpet.

I stayed at The Wessex in February and enjoyed my stay so much that when i had a chance of another break here i did not hesitate. They have upped their game since my last stay especially in the dining room, the food was excellent, hot+very tasty.even my fussy mother who can be hard to please really enjoyed the food. The room was spacious and comfortable and clean, shower was great with loads of hot water at all times.it was actually hot + sunny when i stayed so its great to be able to leave windows open all night,no noise outside (room at rear) so i slept like a log which i normally don't.The staff were all very friendly and polite..i really enjoyed my stay here and would have no hesitation coming to stay again as the hotel is in an ideal location and such a pretty +friendly town..this hotel has got a new manager who is making improvements, well done to everyone at the hotel for making my stay such a good one.i shall be back

Room Tip: room 105 large twin bedded room on 1st floor at rear, nice+quiet, windows that open

Just returned after a 5 day stay at The Wessex. After reading some reviews I was very apprehensive. We thought the staff in dining room very helpful, the food was satisfactory. The only comment I will make is they could do with a new toaster in the one dining room.. The bedrooms on the first floor were lovely and clean and very comfortable always plenty of towels and hot water.

Room Tip: Our rooms were facing the back of the Hotel. Very quiet.

we booked wessex hotel last minute as it was bank holiday we did not have alot to choose. from the outside it looks a bit drab. the room they gave us was great lots of room and it had a juczzi bath. we had a lovely 2 night stay, reception staff were very nice also hose keeping lady was lovely, we would stay again they also allow dogs which was great as this can be hard to find place to stay, it was about a mile and half walk to glastenbury but was a pleasant walk lots of pubs cafes in the street and clarks shopping village accross the road. only bad thing was breackfast it was cold.
