“Excellent in everyway!!”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

We were lucky enough to find this B&B on the internet, and what a result!!

Hans and Eva were very accommodating, going above and beyond the call of duty to make sure we were comfortable and happy. Always willing to give superb recommendations for locations to visit and places to eat, I really can’t thank them enough!!

Gozo is a truly beautiful island and I think staying at Ferrieha really enhanced our enjoyment of it with spectacular views and a really chilled atmosphere.

If I had one slight improvment recommendation it would be that for the summer months Air con would be better than the fans provided. However, the fans usually did the job

THANKYOU EVA & HANS !!!

Room Tip: We had room 4 which has a large balcony and a sofa to enjoy the view.

We stayed at Ferrieha for 4 nights and even after reading the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor, it still managed to completely exceed our expectations. Prior to our visit, we were immediately impressed with the extremely straightforward booking process with subsequent prompt and excellent communications if we had any questions or queries. The farmhouse is in a great location at the end of a quiet side street but only 5 minutes walk to the main square of Qala. The front entrance of Ferrieha appears rather modest but then unexpectedly opens up to reveal the stunning interior and a glorious curved staircase. We reserved room 4 which was beautifully presented and immaculately clean with two private terraces offering the most breathtaking views across to Comino and Malta. You cannot beat sitting out in the evening with a glass of wine looking out to the sparkling sea and the distant lights of the neighbouring islands! The only point to note is that the room does not have air conditioning but we did not find this particularly problematic as the room will stay reasonably cool with the fans and if you keep the blinds drawn during the midday heat. There is a guest fridge – within which each room is allocated its own shelf for personal food and drinks – which is well-stocked which water, beer and wine accompanied by a price list and an honesty book.

Outside the pool area was peaceful and relaxing with plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas, a shaded seating area as well as a hammock, which was big enough for two people to enjoy. The wonderful landscaping was meticulously maintained and home to a Chameleon who we finally managed to spot after a couple days of searching! We did see a few wasps that came to drink from the side of the pool but despite slight initial concerns they were extremely friendly and moved out of the way when we were swimming.

Breakfast included a selection of teas, coffee and fruit juices along with cereals, a fruit platter, yoghurts, cheeses, meats, a variety of breads and patisseries...everything you needed for a hearty start to the day. Everyone ate together sitting around the dining table, which was a wonderful opportunity to meet the other guests and share cultural experiences and moments of communal happiness and laughter.

Aside from the farmhouse, which has its own charm and character, it is the welcoming, kind and generous hosts, Hans and Eva who make this a truly special place to stay. They work as a strong team and are always on hand to help, often going above and beyond. They organised the car hire for us (at a very reasonable rate), provided a wealth of information on places to visit and offered some excellent restaurant recommendations. Moreover, as I am a vegetarian and was struggling to find any hot vegetarian dishes apart from pasta or pizza, Eva phoned up numerous restaurants to ask about alternative vegetarian options. On our departure, Hans kindly dropped us off to the port and Eva arranged a taxi to meet us at the Malta ferry port on the way back to take us directly to the airport so as to avoid the hassle of having to take the bus. We absolutely cannot thank them enough for making our holiday so memorable and for helping us to experience the best that Gozo has to offer. We can now understand why Eva and Hans describe on the website as having ‘found [their] paradise on Gozo’.

I have uploaded some pictures of Ferrieha and the surrounding area but they simply do not do not do the farmhouse or Gozo justice so you will have to go and see for yourselves...you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 4, which is at the top of the house with 2 private terraces and breathtaking views...

We stayed for 7 nights in June and were very impressed by the high standards of the farmhouse and the efforts made by Eva and Hans to ensure the perfect stay. Room No. 2 was excellent and had a gorgeous view of Comino from it's lovely balcony. The pool area is exceptionally well maintained and a pleasure to spend some down time in when you feel a break is needed from exploring the island.
Breakfasts were excellent with a very good selection and most importantly chocolate muffins!
A fantastic B&B to explore Gozo from, couldn't recommend it highly enough!

My wife and I stayed for 9 nights at Ferrieha Farmhouse B&B which is located on the south side of the village of Qala (Can be google or bing mapped by these coordinates 36.031688,14.311233 although the aerial image is way out of date on google but not bing) where pretty much nothing stands in the way of the view to Comino and on towards Malta. There’s also a little clip of it on youtube.

The Farmhouse itself can be found up the end of a small quiet dead end street that runs off an almost equally quiet main road (Tac-Cawl). It is built (maybe clad, but you can’t tell) with the traditional local stone, the entrance hall is large and leads to an impressive stairwell that takes you up to the rented rooms. The breakfast area is found downstairs which is part of the hosts (Eva and Hans) large living area. Unfortunately the design does mean that to get to the back of the property (the pool area) you do need to walk through here – however this really wasn’t a problem and soon became natural. The pool is lovely, fairly deep and Hans is obsessive about keeping it clean for everyone and getting it to the right temperature. There are enough sun loungers for every guest, a Gazebo type affair, and a double hammock.

The Farmhouse was often very quiet, it seems that Eva and Hans don’t run it at full capacity, there was two occasions where we found we were the only guests. It was rare to find anyone else at the pool area and certainly never busy. It was very quiet and peaceful as is most of Gozo. They do have neighbours, but we barely noticed them while we were there except one day their kids were having a pool party, but it was really only background noise and no interruption to our lazing around the pool that day.

There are three bedrooms on the first floor and then room 4 on the top floor via a small stone spiral staircase. In our opinion (and we did nose around all the other rooms and give them a good inspection), room 4 was by far the best. Although slightly smaller than room 1, it did have a lot of privacy going for it and a brilliant very large private balcony which both aspects make for some great private sun bathing. All the rooms had ceiling fans and free standing fans.

The location is a bit off the beaten track, but then really most of Gozo is very much off the beaten track, so makes no odds. You can walk down Tac-Cawl and then a little footpath along the coast which will take you first one inlet which has some steps down to the water, and then another 50M is Hondoq beach/bay. It’s a 15 minute walk or you can drive through the village to get there. We also walked a few times back to Mgarr for the cash machine and eating in the evening – this took about 20 minutes there, 25 back (all uphill). Don’t rely on just finding taxi’s, plus they seem very expensive for the distances involved. Qala itself is like a ghost town most of the time (again, much of Gozo is), although head for the main square when church is finishing and it gets pretty busy. On the main square there are a couple of bars and 4 places to eat. If you’re a “foodie”, then none of them will leave you impressed but they do offer incredible value. There are a couple of other places locally as well.

Although not advertised, so I wouldn’t want to say it’s there for sure, there is good WiFi around most the property and well into the pool area (although doesn’t reach to room 4, unless you hang over the balcony). There was also a PC which you could use in the entrance area.

Breakfast was a simple affair, but good produce made up of a selection of breads, cheeses, meats, juice and proper coffee made by Hans.

As with all places like this, even though Ferrieha ticks a lot of boxes, it’s not so much the location or property that make a place special; but your hosts.

Eva and Hans add a huge amount of value to your stay. We had good communications with them via email even before we got there and they were able to arrange a very good TAXI firm for door to door service from Malta airport to the B&B. During our stay they were able to comment and suggest on things for us and book things for us. This included a hire car (quite aged but with that came with a lot of character, although another guest had a boring up-to-date vehicle) and boat trip with Sail Gozo (strongly recommend this – also reviewed on TA).

They always took the time to introduce guests to each other. Very much depending on their schedule, you may end up sharing wine with them, chatting to them about many subjects and if you’re really lucky Eva may invite you to eat with them which for us was the best meal we had on the Island. Although have spent 7 years on the Island, they aren’t locals and as such may not have the in-depth historical knowledge of the area but certainly have a fair amount of knowledge and opinions about current affairs on Gozo. Ultimately, spending time in Ferrieha B&B was like visiting friends (who made you breakfast and didn’t ever ask you to wash up) and hopefully our paths will cross again.

My only negative would be that this trip made me realise I need air conditioning. My body can’t adapt to the heat (this is the first time in a long time I’ve gone somewhere without AC) and there never seemed any escape from it especially at night. It’s made me realise that from now on I will *always* pay the extra premium for AC when temperatures go above mid 20’s. However, I knew this to be the case, so I can’t really criticise Ferrieha on this. That said, we were there at a fairly hot period in early July.

Room Tip: Room 4 for privacy and best views

We stayed for four nights in June when it was exceptionally hot. We received a very warm greeting from Hans and Eva on arrival. The farmhouse feels spacious and our room was a good size with an ensuite shower, it was all very quiet and despite the heat the fans in the room kept us cool. There is a fridge on the landing with your own shelf which was wonderful as plenty of cold water was needed not to mention the odd bottle of wine, you can buy your own or Hans very kindly places water, wine and beer in the fridge which you can sign for. There is a beautiful garden with a swimming pool and plenty of chairs/loungers - all very relaxing. There are a surprising number of restaurants/bars within easy walking distance. We hired a car for a couple of days which Eva arranged for us and then Hans ran us down to pick it up, they really make everything so easy for you. We both really recommend Ferrieha Farmhouse.

Location: A little away from the port and bigger towns of the island, but don’t be put off if you don’t have a car, as hourly buses run nearby and the walk from the ferry terminal to the guesthouse is not too bad a(n uphill) walk if you’re relatively fit. Eva and Hands kindly picked us up upon our arrival at the ferry terminal and took us to the Farmhouse, very kind of them and particularly helpful as I think it would have been quite hard to find on our own.

The interior, with its tiled floors and beautiful pale stone walls with graceful arches, offers a refreshingly cool respite from the Maltese heat. Our room was equipped with plenty of wardrobe/storage space and excellent shower (both in terms of heat and pressure), and although on the lower level and without a balcony, still offered views out to the sea.

A highlight of the house is the very nicely landscaped, scrupulously clean pool area, with loungers and a hammock and plenty of shade from umbrellas, and the pool is kept a pleasant, refreshing temperature.

Owners Hans and Eva have done everything they can to make guests comfortable, from installing double glazing to keep out any noise, and providing a place to dry damp towels and swimsuits, to assigning each room a shelf in a communal fridge (very useful for keeping water and other beverages cold), that also had beer and wine available to purchase (at reasonable prices). The continental breakfast included fresh local bread, fruit salad and boiled eggs a well as muffins, cereal and yoghurt, etc, and was very nice.

My only regret is that we didn’t have more time to make full use of the wonderfully relaxing environment Eva and Hans have created here. I’ve already recommended it to friends and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to people looking for a very welcoming, comfortable and relaxing stay on Gozo.

Note: We stayed 7 days in Valletta and 3 on Gozo, and in hindsight I would have preferred it the other way around, or at least have our time more evenly divided. Even though it is much smaller than Malta, I found Gozo more compelling, and a nicer place to relax, especially when staying at such a wonderful guesthouse.
