We were leaving our home (and guesthouse) in France for a short break in Valencia, but we were travelling with our two dogs so we have a limited number of hotels available to us. We spent a couple of nights in the centre at the HI Express in San Luis and the Petit Palace Germanais (see reviews) but we upped budget and upped sticks for the Ad Hoc. By calling them we got a cheaper rate than advertised on the internet. The room was fine, paper thin walls as previously noted, but not a huge problem.
My biggest complaint was with the restaurant, we asked at reception for recommendations for dinner, no one suggested their own restaurant (for reasons that will become obvious) we were pointed in the direction of a place called Heron City by the waitress. Upon hearing the name we enquired if it was a fast food place but were told no. Upon arriving there we found it was the typical out of town home to all the franchised food operators McDonalds, etc. So we turned tail and went back to the town, finding little there we headed back to the restaurant at the hotel. The menu sounds interesting, but entering the restaurant there were lots of overhead spotlights on full beam, no music and other guests smoking pipes, cigarettes and cigars - a total lack of atmosphere.
We ordered and after a while we were brought an amuse bouche and some bread that we hadn't ordered, but were later charged for. The starters were fine, they arrived with our wine which the waiter had recommended, but didn't know where it came from or the grape variety. We had ordered water when we ordered our meals, that didn't arrive until we asked again. Some of this could have been excused but there were at most 5 occupied tables of 2 and 2 waiters. The other tables were left dirty, no one asked if we enjoyed our meals. Our main courses were really poor, too salty and just badly thought out.
We were not asked if we enjoyed our dinner or our stay, so we didn't get a chance to say no. I wouldn't recommend this hotel because there is very little to see around it, there is a limited choice of alternative dining and eating at the restaurant is a definite no-no. I felt that our stay would have been greatly improved if the staff who were friendly, had a bit more training to enable them to do their jobs to a better standard.
