“Unforgettable Visit”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

Wow, what a beautiful location in Wrangell-St. Elias national park & preserve, I love the isolation of this lodge. Crossing a foot bridge to be picked up by the lodge shuttle. A very unique travel experience. Love the Kennicott Mill nearby. Mt. Blackburn was visible out our room window. It's a long but scenic drive from Anchorage & about 55 miles down a gravel/dirt road was worth it.. Room was extremely clean & surprisingly so was the shared bathroom. Staff was professional & friendly. Meals were first rate in the dining room. Without hesitation I will return to this lodge and have a longer visit. We were lucky enough to catch some very warm weather during our stay.

Stayed for one night. The staff were wonderful. The food was superb. Had to use a shared bathroom/shower which was kept very clean! Would highly recommend staying here. Had an awesome view of Mt. Blackburn and Kennicott glacier from the balcony of my room.

What a great place! We stayed here for 3 nights in early June. Just got back from our 2 week trip to Alaska. I was expecting something a little more resorty, considering the price and write up, but that was not the case. This is an off the beaten path rustic place. We stayed in the new annex, with en-suite rooms, and our room was great. Spacious and clean. It's hard to keep things clean in such a dusty environment! I only wish we had discovered the sitting room in the annex before our last day. Nobody told us about it and we didn't discover it soon enough to enjoy it.

Be aware that there is a lot of unsightly construction going on near the property, though. The park service is constantly working to keep the historic mine buildings maintained or fortified so they don't fall down. Some look like they might fall down at any moment. You will see this if you walk around "town" or take the tour, which I do recommend. It's very interesting.

The hotel has fabulous food. I can't say enough about that. We had halibut, cornish game hens and prime rib on our three nights. All amazing. Kudos to the chef. We took the meal plan, and I also recommend that, as there isn't anywhere else to eat, really. Plus, the location and views and staff are all fantastic. We had good weather and went flight seeing from nearby McCarthy. What an unforgettable experience! It isn't easy to get here, but it's worth it. I hope it stays this way and doesn't get overrun one day.

Room Tip: I recommend the annex if you want a private bathroom.

My husband and I took a long weekend for Father's Day and visited Kennicott Glacier Lodge. We had a lovely day at the lodge. It was a bargain with all three meals for the day included and they were all excellent. The staff was from all over the world, but they all took interest in the history and facts about the area and were very knowledgeable. They were all friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Nestled between the Chugach Mountain range and the Wrangell-St. Elias Range, you could not ask for more spectacular scenery. The history of the Kennecott Copper mine and the old Mill site add to the experience. Can't recommend a stay at the lodge more highly for both out of state visitors and Alaskans like us looking for a weekend getaway.

Very clean facility with great food and awesome attitudes. The lodge is simple and rustic, with an emphasis on historical accuracy. If you are expecting a high end luxury resort, this won't be for you. We were a bit apprehensive of the shared bathrooms in the main lodge, but there was no need for concern. There were plenty for all and although down the hall a bit, it really wasn't much further then you would expect to walk in your own home. Spectacular views and great proximity to the Mine/Mill. I was interested in photos of Kennicott so nothing beats being able to get out of bed at 4 in the morning for some sunrise photos then be back in bed 5 minutes later. We drove to McCarthy and the van met us at the bridge to pick up our bags and deliver them to the lodge while we rode our bicycles. Their willingness do work with us on things like that really make it a special place that I intend to return to.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the center of the building are closer to the bathrooms but significantly more hallwa...

I was fortunate enough to be able to stay at this diamond in the rough. What a great place to stay from the friendly staff, great food, and all the great artifacts from the past. Great hiking. What a great place to be and enjoy. No crowds. We drove in on the old railroad bed and enjoyed the experience.

Room Tip: Choose a room with the Glacier view. You will not be disappointed.

We spent two nights here last July and could not be happier with the experience. The owners and staff were wonderful and made sure all our needs were met. The food was fantastic to say the least. Being 70 miles from nowhere they more than met our expectations. The mill had been closed down due to restoration but we visited the outer buildings and walked the trails in the area. Rooms were clean and comfortable with the deck outside overlooking the mountain range. If you are going to Alaska do not miss this place!
