We went here due to recommendations from LP but it is a dump. We came up river from Luang Prabang via small motorboat (a must for the scenery and the people) and could climb directly to the balcony from the river via a rickety old ladder so decided to walk around instead. When we got into the town there were no directions on how to get there but we finally found it by walking down little alleys overflowing with sewage.

When we got there no-one was at reception but people were all sitting around on a balcony that shook whenever someone walked on it drinking beer. We finally got someones attention and they showed us a room. It had doors that didn't close let alone lock, filthy sheets on the beds and a cold shower.

We got the feeling that this place survived because people were too tired to seek out other accommodation after finding it as there are very few places to stay here.

For dinner we originally ordered there but it took an hour before they came back and told us they didn't have that and could we choose something else. So we did, we left both dinner and the hotel for another place.

I went directly to the Nam Ou based on TA and other reviews. What a mistake. A woman came out when I arrived, didn't say anything to me except for the price of the room (50,000 kip, which sounds like a great deal, but isn't, believe me!) and pointed me to a room and disappeared. There was a whole upper level of rooms with much nicer views of the river, but they weren't offered.

It was hard to know who the staff were - some people about, but none had any interest in my being there and seemed annoyed that I was. The place was truly disgusting - the balcony was strewn with litter, junk and garbage and there were buckets of standing water around with dead insects floating in them.

The room was smelly, musty and the bathroom reeked of sewage. Only cold water and just disgusting.

The food at the restaurant was fair, but again, it seemed like I was putting people out when I showed up to eat.

The entire small village of Muang Khua did not give me a good feeling - I say get out of there as quickly as possible and if you're coming from Vietnam, go directly to Muang Khoi, which is sweet and quaint and wonderful - there you can find the Rainbow House where I stayed for 30,000 kip a night and it was like a palace compared to this horrible place!

Also beware - no ATMs in Muang Khua, Muong Ngoi or Nong Khiaw - closest is Luang Prabang. There are some money changers in Muang Khua and Nong Khiaw, which offer a much better rate than the guest houses in Muang Ngoi.

This family-run guesthouse is located in a wonderful place, with terrific views oer the river Nam Ou.
Very basic rooms and toilets, but it is what you expect for the price you pay (in our case, 40000 kips for a double room).
The owner and his family are very helpful and nice people.
OK for one or two, which is the time you'll most probably spend in Muang Khuang before heading to Vietnam or deeper into Laos.
Recommended.

We paid 50,000k for a night in a double room with attached shower/toilet. The toilet was a sit-down style with a bucket flush. The cold shower had really poor water pressure – I found it easier to have a bucket shower.
Our room had an air of neglect and could have been cleaner. No apparent attention had been paid to detail, eg the room door did not close properly, a fault which should have been quick and easy to fix.
Also, we were unhappy to discover a small caged animal outside our room. The cage was tiny and the animal was clearly distressed. We attempted to convey our concern to the guest house owners but they didn’t appear to speak enough English (and we certainly didn’t speak enough Lao!) to understand what we were getting at.

There are a couple of places in town with English menus where you can get the usual western breakfasts, fried rice and noodles. Other than that there does not seem to be much to do in Muang Khoua, but it is a convenient stopover if you are crossing the border from/to Vietnam.

Tip: From Muang Khoua we took a slow boat downriver to Muang Ngoi. This was a relatively expensive mode of public transport, but well worth it for the scenery. We paid 110,000kip each for the three hour trip.
