Beautiful, tranquill location with amazing beaches. Sarah and Flavio make you feel instantly at home with an amazing welcome, tour around the resort and personally show you your room to make sure everything is ok. Its these little attentions to detail and personal approach which sets this resort apart from any other resort. Everybody is so welcoming, nothing is too much trouble. The food is excelent and cocktails to die for, theyre made from the freshest fruit blended with the alcohol, delicious. Raph the food and bevarge manager is so lovely and makes sure you feel at home. There is a sign in the bar at Coco Jambo that reads "Here you'll never drink alone" and that is certainly true there is such a mix of clienetele here from lone travelers to couples, to groups of friends and families and because the resort is so friendly everybody chats to each other, you really are never alone. The friday night party is amazing, sand between your toes, top tunes playing and fire dancing! Just awesome and different atmoshphere from the chilled out rest of the week. People come from all over the island to party under the stars. The pizzas here are true authentic Italian and delicious.

I was originally travelling alone to Zanzibar for a chill out week after volunteer work in South Africa, so checked out trip advisor reviews for a hotel on the island. I came across the Waikiki and based mainly on previous reviews and price I decided to book a room. I contacted Sarah the owner by email regarding transfer to and from the airport, and promptly received a reply offering a transfer service. A friend then wanted to join me last minute on the holiday so I contacted Sarah again regarding a change of room to a twin room. She went out of her way to accommodate me even though I had originally booked through a booking company. I am SO pleased I chose this hotel. I was extremely happy to be greeted upon airport arrival by the hotel transfer service, which was reasonably priced. I was then given a wonderful welcome by the hotel and an orientation of the place. I met Sarah, her staff and friends and felt immediately at home there, which is exactly what I had wanted had I been going solo as originally planned. What a beautiful setting, the beach is wonderful and the rooms were far better than expected based on the price and star rating. Very pleasantly surprised. The chilled out atmosphere was a pleasure to be around, and the whole place had an amazing homely feel to it, white sand beneath your toes from your room to the restaurant to the beach, what's not to love?!? The beach bar was a great place to sit and chill with a cocktail, and don't get me started on the pizzas!! Authentic Italian wood fired pizza oven available all day long ( Sarah's husband is Italian) the pizzas are delicious and famous around the island. Also the hotel hosts a party every Friday night which gets busy with other people coming in from other hotels, which was a great night dancing to good music in the sand. I honestly can't say enough good stuff about this hotel. Only one complaint .....get some diet coke in for my next visit please!!!

My boyfriend booked a room at Waikiki for a 4 day trip to Zanzibar. We picked this hotel because the beach looked nice and the rooms were much more reasonably priced than the larger resorts (even with off-season discounts in early December).

The room decor was cool, as was the overall look and feel of the hotel. We didn't stay for the full moon cannibal party but we could tell it was infamous in the area. The hotel had a lot of cool places to chill and have a drink or eat some tasty pizza. We also had a nice chat with the owner when we checked in which was helpful.

The drawbacks were definitely that the price of the food makes up for the cheaper room prices. We found the big hotel bars cheaper and still welcomed our cash, we also liked the hidden local bar next door with much cheaper prices. Our toilet also had a problem that flooded the bathroom for 2 days, but eventually the fundi was able to fix it. My boyfriend also forgot to book for 2 people on expedia and we ended up paying way more for the "additional person" than we would have if we booked for 2 people from the beginning.

We booked several day trips through the hotel including snorkeling and a spice farm tour and stone town tour. The main guide, Abro, did create a confusing situation when he asked us to pay him cash for these trips but the hotel indicated we could pay them by credit card. It got sorted out but it was weird. The day trips were amazing though, very good tour guides, highly recommended.

We did get a bit of harassment by the local beach boys when we went off the property but they were respectful of the hotel owner and didn't bother us when sunbathing at the hotel. The beach boys speak many languages, try their Spanish, Italian, English, German...but if you speak Swahili to them they'll give you a puzzled look and then laugh. Try it if you know some Swahili, it will also get you better prices with the local beach folks selling various goods.

Room Tip: We picked the Safari room, it was very posh and nice decor, reasonable price and right on the beach.

Ok place to stay for 1 or 2 nights, but not for us anymore...
I wouldnt recommend staying there on a Friday night, unless u want to stay up all night, since the weekly party is very loud and right outside of the rooms. The room is also pretty warm at night and we had a few huge cockroaches in the bathroom.
They organised us a snorkelling trip, which was quite expensive. The sea was very wild, so we couldn't see anything under water, it was even dangerous with the sea / weather like that. It was not correct at all of the hotel to let us go on that trip that day.
Food and drinks are quite expensive as well. The pizza was really good though, freshly made on the spot.
The most horrible thing of this hotel was the (european) staff... It looks like they are on holidays there themselves and everything you aske them is too much.
We wanted to check out at 9 coz we had to catch our flight home, but apparently check-out is only from 10 (they didnt tell us that)? So the receptionist was still in her bed at that time. By the time she got up and took a shower it was 9.30, and we were very late at the airport (quite a stressfull end of the holiday).
Despite the nice setting, i would not go back there and wouldnt recommend it to other people.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking your time to review our property.
We have come to realise that by now people have learnt how to read and interpret reviews left by guests on this website and can see for themselves that when reviews range from very positive to completely negative that maybe this is because of people’s expectations instead of the actual place itself.

I am responding to this review because I feel that your view is not a completely true picture of Waikiki Resort.

Waikiki is a simple 3* Resort on the beach in Pwani Mchangani. All our rooms are only a few steps away from the Indian ocean and most guests forget their shoes once they have checked in. If you are looking for a place with mini bars ,Tv's and phones in the rooms then you will be very disappointed.
We pride ourselves in the fact of keeping the resort as natural as possible whlst still providing great value for money services!!
Every morning we ask our guests to fill in a comment form about their stay. If there are any problems we can then intervene. It seems that none of these issues were mentioned before but we find out about them now 1.5 months later on Trip advisor. Obviously it is now to late to do anything about it.
We have 3 categories of rooms Ethnic (Economy without ac) Safari and Domino (Standard + Deluxe with ac) Room descriptions are available on our website and even on other internet sites with which we co operate.
You were here in January which is the hottest time of year and as you chose an Economy room without ac for your stay it is possibie that the room could be warm at night. We always provide extra fans to guests staying in these rooms to help with this issue.
We appreciate your positive comments about the pizza. We are constantly working with our staff to make sure that our food is to the highest standard with acceptable prices for the quality given.. Infact we renewed our menu in December and now the most expensive item is 14$.

A freshly caught catch of the day is only 12$ and the portions are not small ,so in saying that our restaurant is highly priced is definitely a false statement.
ALchohol in general is expensive in Zanzibar as everything has to be imported here and obviously we need to pay all the relevant taxes and charges so price our drinks accordingly.

We would like to apologise for your snorkelling trip to Mnemba Island.
Our usual policy is to check weather conditions and advise guests of the conditons before sending anyone on a sea excursion. There are times of the year when the sea can be rough and our guides would never intentially take anyone out in a boat if the situation would be dangerous. Our tour guides have fixed prices as they also pay licenses, taxes and permits.

Lastly I would just like to comment about the Check out situation that you mention.
We have a lot of guests that need to leave the hotel very early in the morning and we provide 2 options to all our guests. They day before our guests are leaving we attach a card to the room door advising guests that they can make the check out from 5pm-7.30pm or in the morning from 9am-10am....If you knew that you needed to leave early why didn't you confirm the check out in the evening with our guest relation???
Maybe because you were trying to avoid to pay your bill??? Infact our assistant manager had to stop you from leaving in a taxi at 8am and remind you that your bill still needed to be settled.

It seems that from day 1 you took an disliking to one of our European staff and in turn the rest of our staff followed. We have 30 staff working hard to ensure that each guests stay is as pleasurable as possible.
Maybe the title "Horrible Staff" was not really appropriate and could have been avoided.

Regards

The location of this resort is Great, right on the beach. The atmosphere is very relaxed, you only need your shoes again when you leave. Our room was nicely decorated and very clean. The staff were always very helpful and friendly.
They organised us a trip to go snorkelling which was well organised and the snorkelling was awesome. Can't believe how time flies when you having fun.
We found the food for half board very limited, would be nice to have a little more choice. Pizzas on the beach were sooooo tasty. I thought the price of their drinks were pricey.
They have a party every Friday night, so if you not into loud music avoid this venue on a Friday as everything takes place in the middle which is right outside the rooms.
We had no water for nearly a whole day which was very unpleasant, but I believe it affected the whole side of the island.

Room Tip: Very hot, pay a little extra for a room with air-conditioner

Nicely decorated and quality resort. Nice and quiet place except for friday nights when there's party night at Waikiki (which is either good or bad, your choice). The food is good, especially the pizzas and friday night's local food dinner was also delicious.

During our stay at the Waikiki Resort (from Dec 22, 2013 to Jan 04 , 2014) we were feeling like at home. The staff was really looking to meet our expectations. Food was excellent (the pizzas yummy); cocktails at the happy hour were also unforgettable.
We had a Safari villa and our kids (young adults) were split in two Ethnic villas, which are a bit smaller. If you request a/c, then you will need to book the … All villas are located close to the restaurant and at 30 seconds from the private beach. Sand is cleaned every morning and as it’s only accessible for the Waikiki guests.
Mr Mirage arranged for us two excursions: visit of a spice farm and the visit of Stone Town with a guide. We were feeling so well and relax at Waikiki that we did not arrange for additional excursions.
By walking on the beach at low tide, we saw all the ladies from the villages harvesting see weeds. At high tide, this beach becomes a kite surf paradise.
On Friday night, the Cannibal Party starts with an impressive acrobatic spectacle and is followed by a disco party. It is very famous; this party attracts a lot of people.
Early breakfasts were arranged to allow early pickup by the One Ocean Dive centre. I really appreciated this facility.
If you want to rent a scooter, than you will need to get an international drive license with you. Otherwise, a foreigner-driving permit can obtain against few dollars and 2 to 3 days.
We enjoyed very much our stay at Waikiki and warmly recommend this place to anybody wanting to spend some good time at the beach hassle free and relax.

Again, thank you Waikiki for these excellent holidays.

Philippe
