Acra Retreat - Mountain View Lodge - Waterval Boven
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 10, 2013

From the moment we arrived we were greeted with a friendly smile and warm welcome from Holgar. Walking onto the patio and being greeted with an amazing view made the stay all the more worth while. Don't bother going into town for supper but rather stay at the lodge and enjoy the home made meal. The hospitality of Norma and Holgar at the bar during the evening was one of the reasons we will definitely be going back. A special thanks to Norma for the informative conversation on the history of the local sites.

It is with a feeling of overwhelming satisfaction and sincere appreciation that I post this review on Acra Retreat Mountain View Lodge. My family and I had the pleasure of spending five glorious days at this unique and tranquil lodge nestled in the mountains at Waterval Boven in Mpumalanga.

On our arrival, Holger (co-owner) received us like royalty and we were settled into our room. Shortly after, Norma (co-owner) came to introduce herself ensuring that our every need was seen to. A brief tour of the lodge followed and I was astounded at the personal attention we received. This certainly set the mood for all the wonderful things that was to follow.

We spent our time relaxing on the deck overlooking the spectacular valley or at the pool. Some days we set off to enjoy some of the many sites of interest in the area. I do recommend a trip to Kaapche Hoop or The Cradle of Mankind at Badplaas. Do not forget a visit to Elands waterfall – WOW, so breathtaking and majestic. If you are a steam engine enthusiast, do visit the yard just a few minutes from Acra. The Sodwala caves is a must and not to be missed. For those die-hard shopaholics, Nelspruit is just 100 km away.

The best part of a day out was the return knowing that Holger and Norma (and staff) had prepared one of their scrumptious dinners. I have to compliment them on their culinary skills. We truly treasure those chats at the bar after dinner - not to mention the personal touch in keeping us company till late out on the deck. We feel like we have known you forever and can BOLDLY state that you are now part of our family.

I would like to take this opportunity and compliment them on their outstanding lodge and service. It is truly an experience like no other and we WILL most defiantly be back for many more visits.

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. It is even more difficult if good; like in this instance; was superb. Need I state that we left with a heavy heart and truly look forward to our next visit.

On a personal note....
Thank you Holger and Norma for the love we received and Norma; you made our stay very special for Michaele. Never in a million years did we expect to receive so much more than just a fantastic holiday. We will treasure every moment!!!

Room Tip: Sorry, they are all GREAT!!!

The mother was out of town, so not too sure if this was the reason for our more than disappointing stay. The son Holger was cold and unfriendly. We had to squeeze travel information out of him. Takes him forever to warm up. We asked for a cot after check in, he actually said to us, "we are lucky we asked now"....... The staff are about to leave. We never get such responses from hotel staff. He made a point for highlighting whenever he thought he was going beyond the call of duty. Not sure what others family lives are like, but we certainly didn't feel at home. We didn't think he was child friendly either.

The pluses are the short drive from joburg, the view.....Especially from the look out deck. It is very relaxing.

Room Tip: the zebra room is the best. Very spacious.

We stayed 1 night in the Africa room, which has its own deck. Nice room, good bed and wonderful view! There is a big lounge with a lovely singing bird and a huge deck with picknick tables. Everywhere you have a great view. There is a pool in the beautiful garden wuth lots of birds. Breakfast is great with fresh fruit, lots of jams, eggs etc. The best we had in south africa (probably thanks to the german roots of the hostst and owners). Well worth a stay, also because of it location halfway betwee j'burg and the krugerpark. Waterval boven is a small town with only one place to eat and the food was not good (steak and chips of very poor quality). So bring something to snack for the night and eat during the day somewhere else. Holger, the host, is a nice friendly man and knows a lot about the environment. Only complaint is the pooor decking near the pool and stairs, but Holger is repairing.

As all the others say - good stop off on way to Kruger. Mother and son, Norma and Holger, try everything to help.

Fantastic Room (we had the Zebra room); great breakfasts and, optional, Holger is a great cook if you stay for the evening meal. and really nice views

Drive up the hill for good walks

Visit Kaapse Hoop for a great view and some crafts. Pancake restaurant was fantastic.

The bad news - BA delayed the flight so we only had one night there instead of 2 ;-(

This place is run by a very friendly mother and son team.

They go to great lengths to make you feel comfortable and get the most out of your stay. Norma even drove us around for a tour of the local area in her car one day. They also gave good recommendations for dinner in the town.

They have a sunken trampoline in the garden which the kids adored.
The rooms are cute and comfortable.

There premises is surrounded by fencing and a security system and the rooms have lockable gates internally to the doors onto the veranda - all this could either make you feel reassured and safe or a bit nervous and paranoid depending on how you look at it!

The pool was pleasant enough - a little cool for me but the kids certainly enjoyed it.

Great views from all the bedrooms. We had two little rooms downstairs which were almost adjoining - plus sole use of the downstairs bathroom (not ensuite).

Nice plentiful breakfast served on the veranda each morning with cereals and fruit, as well as freshly cooked bacon, eggs, sausage etc on offer.

This is a guesthouse within a family home, and as such you do feel almost part of the family.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms probably feel a little brighter and have better views as they are unrestricted by the...

Large guest house in mountains above the town which is just off the main motorway from Joburg to southern Kruger. Good mountain views from nice gardens (with a pool in summer). Owner very friendly and keen to please. Good breakfast with lots of fruit. Could get noisy if families staying or fellow guests decide to make use of the large bar. No wifi. Relatively expensive at R890 plus 140 each for dinner. Tip – if you are coming from Joburg you will need to pass the expensive (R64) toll booth at Machadodorp before you reach the turn off so if you are heading north and don't need to stay on the N4 then bear this in mind when comparing costs with accommodation in Dullstroom area.

Room Tip: Downstairs may be quieter as away from the lounge/dining room.
