Remarkably intact 16th century fortress overlooking the Dniester River. It was immense at one point--something like 80 hectares. Don't miss it

No point in going to Tighina without going to the fort. You would need a guide to call ahead a day or so. Just because you get to the town doesn't mean you get in. You need a car to get there

Splendid historical fortress .. partly renovated with a small museum and accessible viewing areas. No high tech interactive gizmos like in English museums so maybe a not suitable for children but for history buffs a great place to spend a couple of hours.

The fortress is fairly impressive and definitely a must-see if you go to Transnistria. The best way to sneak in is through the military base, by telling the guide you are going to see the church. From there it is a short walk to the fortress. Alternatively, you could walk around in a large circle and enter through the automotive plant on the other side. The renovations are ongoing. A big plus is a lot of useful information stands on three languages. I did actually learn a lot!

I visited the Bendery Fort on my way back to Chisinau from Tiraspol.
The fort has been recently renovated with a nice museum, medieval torture chamber and ramparts that give great views of the Dniester and it's bridge.
Don't be fooled by the grim approach through industrial land.. it's worth it in the end.
