“Stay in the Palace, avoid the Cottages”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

The Palace is a great property surrounded by beautiful pines and green environs. The weather is invariably enjoyable. Though the city does not have much to offer, but an overnight stay in the Palace is a unique experience.
However, the cottages/huts on the same property are a different story altogether. 'STAY AWAY FROM THE COTTAGES' at any cost. They are located at a distance from the main Palace and have practicaly no service. Moreover thay are dirty, damp, stinky and the bedding is awful.
Good discounts in the Off-Peak season

Room Tip: The Maharaja Suite is Value if you are booking 2 rooms.

After reviewing it one I am inclined to review it again due to completely different experience. Chail palace is very well located but becomes very crowded in summers. In lean seasons it really comes to life. Chail has good forest areas all around and also offers good bird watching opportunities. Chail Palace is not recommended for bird watchers. Last time I was dissatisfied with service but this time it was exactly opposite. We stayed in the deluxe loghut this time and found the loghut to be spooky, could be even haunted. The staff also insisted us to shift to the main palace which we did......and we are habituated to stay in stand alone cottages, private huts in remote HP and Uttarakhand. The HPTDC website refers to this hotel as a premium which is true as per HPTDC standards. Food esp Indian is good. Continental is Indianised continental though they make awesome Cutlets for evening snacks. For a large family Monal Cottage is best option which has two bedrooms, a large living room and decent dining area. Self cook options are also available.

Room Tip: All cottages and loghuts are a little far away from the main building. The Diwan room 2 is just abov...

My experience of Chail Palace was only restricted to a 45 minute stopover here but it was well worth it. We were on our way back to Delhi from Narkanda and the approach road here is fantastic. For me it was a trip down memory lane, because I came to Chail Palace as a 4 year old in 1989, something I can't remember. So to come back here in itself was a much cherished thing for me. I found the lawns at Chail Palace to be very well maintained and you can keep looking at them and soaking in the ambience, there was a certain timeless feel about the lawns here. Anyone who comes to Shimla and the neighbouring areas should not miss out on visiting Chail Palace even for a short duration.

I incidentally booked a cottage and believed that there will be a superior service. Though an attendant was attached with us, I could only see him during check in and check out. Food was excellent though the dining hall is on a smaller side. Huge lawn with flowers flocking on either side. however, since they have huge area with them, rest of the areas are under developed. Also, since it symbolizes a historic property, there should have been more details about the artifacts, palace itself to make it more interesting for people who are coming.

You go here for the palace, there is nothing else to do than walk around the old palace and do some of the trails in the woods. That said, it is well worth it - the whole ambience of the place is worth the visit, and there is just enough to keep you busy for a couple of days.

The rooms here, the "general" rooms in the palace itself - there are some super-delux-kings-suite to., are ok. If you compare it to european/us standard i would compare it to a pretty decent motell kind of room. But then again, the setting of it brings it up quite a lot. Beds are hard - so if that is a problem for you, they might have a solution..but it is like sleeping on the floor - pretty much. I have no issues with this, so I was ok. Bathrooms are clean and working, there is hot water and both regular shower and toilett. Keep windows closed, there are monkeys.

Resturant will serve indian food, they do have some continental to - but it is usually with and "indian take on it". Omeletts for breakfast, no bacon ofcourse - but this is usual. You get some chicken and some few mutton dishes.

There is a bar, that is actually very nice. They have a selection of the basics, and is a nice place to hang out if you want to sit inside. There is also a billiards room, the table is not billiards but snooker.

The reception area has a great selection of books that other guests has left behind, i did not ask but I am pretty sure that they lend them out for free. And there is also a small shop that sells shawls, yak-wool blankets and other souvenier stuff. Stating that all sold is authentic, and I got the feel that this was true. Nice place for some shopping - but just a small counter selection of mainly fabrics.

Staff is very friendly, and prices are matched good against what you get.

On the down side, they could have opend up the cafe-building outside and get the wifi working. But phones where working fine.

Room Tip: The more you pay the better it gets, ask for room in main building. The cottages is a bit of a walk...

We stayed in Chail Palace Maharaja Suite on dated 21 and 22 june,14.The suite is really huge size having bigger bathrooms and excellent views of front lawn. Staff is really cooperative and caring specially Mr Kashmir and Mr Gulab of Front desk. Food quality is excellent. Room service and housekeeping is also good. We really enjoyed the cool mornings and nights in calm and peaceful location. The only problem is monkeys still the hotel staff also keeps deputing some persons with pellet gun and some dogs to take care of this monkeys problem. Really worth for money to stay over Chail Palace.

chail palace is actually converted in hotel. Thus it has rich quality of architecture, though the service is not up to the mark and the price of food and beverages is a bit high. still the quality is good. besides the hotel offers a haven of peace and serenity away from the bustle of the city which is the foremost advantage of this place. the ambiance is awesome. you will enjoy every bit of staying here.
