“Nice Place to Stay but Don't expect good service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2014

Yes you right, this hotel was used in 3 Idiots. Not remember ? When Sharman and Madhvan went to Javed Jafari palace in search of Ranchordas.

The chail is better than Shimla because you'll get less crowed than Shimla. The Chail Palace was summer capital of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. Chail at 2226 m was somewhat higher than Shimla. The Chail Palace offers cottage and rooms, cottage is good for summers but not in winters. The rooms are Maharaja, Rajkumar, Rajkumari, Deewan, Vazeer room and semi delux.
We opted for Semi Deluxe room, the room were nice warm and comfy even when the out side temperature was 0 degree.

Points to remember:
1. Don't book cottage when you are going in winter.
2. Don't expect good room service.

Room Tip: Don't book cottage when you are going in winter.

Cell phones wont work here as there ain't any signal available at this altitude. So you can stay here without phone buzzing time and again :)
The best part of your stay here was the magnificent lawns of the Palace which you can spend hours on. Beware of the monkeys who won't hesitate to even enter your car while parked with you in it and steal stuff or sneak up beside you and grab your camera on the lawns.
Talking about food, we ate few meals at the in-house restaurant, and it was nice, cold coffee was good :)
Three Idiots, Aamir Khan starrer movie was shot in the main lobby of this hotel.
I would recommend this place to be chosen over any other hill station.

The place has still not become a victim of concrete jungles like other hill stations. Besides its not crowded and is ideal for relaxing amidst natural surroundings. The admisnistrative staff is cooperative and courteous and rooms and lawns etc. are well maintained. The hotel also has options for log huts which are bit off the main track to the hotel at walkable distance and can give a good camping like feeling alongwith family. Memorable experience in natural surroundings of palace hotel.

This place has very large rooms and is away from the crowded areas. The surroundings are nice, with enough greenery all around. There is a large lawn area adjacent to the main palace with few rides for children. Beware of Monkeys all around the place.

However, it is recommended to go there for a day tour rather than staying overnight. The room was dirty with stains all over the furniture, beds/sofas/etc. The rooms do not have Fans or ACs. It is very difficult to stay in the rooms during summer time. We went in June 1st week and found the room too hot to stay comfortably. Maintenance is a serious issue with the rooms. Washrooms were not clean enough. The jacuzzi in the Maharani suite was not working.

Food in the restaurant tasted average. Service was okaish.

Would recommend a day trip to the place rather than staying overnight.

If you are visiting Chail then this is the place you must stay at. Managed by state tourism department, the palace is located inside thick greenery overlooking a beautiful valley with clear view of Shimla city. We stayed in the log huts which were really nice.

Only if you plan to stay here then you need to visit this palace.... palace ???? where is it. Its a mere palace converted to a hotel and the reception area has some antique furniture. You pay Rs. 100 (probably more, cant recollect) and there is nothing except the building and rooms. They dont even have a palace tour and no mention of history.

There is nothing to do here (absolutely nothing) so please dont go to there unless you want to stay. Someone told me that they have neat rooms and food is good. Its value for money since its run by the GOVT.

Maybe you can come here and enjoy a cup of coffee in the palace lawns and take some pictures with family. Thats all you can do here.

Room Tip: Only go if you wish to stay, else nothing to do here.

This place is good if you want to be away from the crowds and want to relax and see nature at its best. Monkeys lots of monkeys here and they are aggressive. Have a very good Massage therapist from Kerala. Large comfortable rooms.

Room Tip: There is apparently a Suite which belonged to the king. Go for the Maharani rooms. Sorry there is no...
