a huge flight of stairs each covered by different ceramics with wonderful ceramics stores and restaurants near by.

A tip at the square at the bottom of the stairs has a very elegant place to have a drink and a bite to eat.

During the planning of our swing through Malta, Sicily and Puglia, climbing this staircase was one of the must do's. This was day 13 of our trip and we had already climbed hundreds of steps so what was another 142 for two seniors?
Drove to Caltagirone from Ragusa Ibla where we had spent the night. Found parking in the pay lot in the Piazza San Francisco de Assisi. It was one of those lots that didn't charge between 1300 and 1600, and we arrived at 1245. So the charge was 20 cents. Of course, we could have sat in the car for 15 minutes and paid nothing.
Walked across the bridge, through the Piazza Municipio and found ourselves looking up at the beautifully decorated staircase - hundreds of potted geraniums and other plants adorned the stairs.
Up we went admiring the differing tile patterns as we climbed. There are shops a plenty lining the staircase and where streets butted against the stairs, children were playing. A very idyllic scene.
Made it to the top and checked out the wonderful ceramic mural and the no longer used Santa Maria del Monte cathedral. So we sratched this accomplishment off our list and headed down, enjoying the great views and a few lemon granitas as we neared the bottom.
Neither of us found the climb to be overly taxing, thanks to the perfect weather, comfortable shoes and because we were distracted by the beauty and activity all around us.
The staircase is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

While the staircase is pretty, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. As with many places in Sicily it could do with a bit of low maintenance, ie taking out the weeds etc.
We just arrived at the end of the flower display on the stairs and can imagine that it looked pretty impressive when it was in full swing.
Of our 19 day trip around Sicily, this is the only place I would bypass.

All I can say is that I heard two tourists say to one another: "what is the gardener doing? The friend exclaimed " He is filling up the gaps with other flowers"! That's funny, because from this picture on your left, it was possibile to focalize on a real floweral boquet set in a vase......there were no gaps letft inadvertently! I thought that was worth a good laugh!

Loved the quaintness of this Sicilian town. Great sites from the top of the "Scala". We also enjoyed the park in Caltagirone along with the Ceramics museum. Good place to lay back and relax enjoying the scenery in a Mountain town.
