“Nature's hideaway”
Reviewed January 29, 2014

Warm, welcoming and extremely hospitable at a beautiful location on the Kerala coast. Sreeranj, his staff and his family couldn't have made us feel more welcome at their seaside hideaway. The room was clean, roomy and airy and no need for aircon. We were overfed with delicious home made Keralan delicacies - and Sreeranj is a fabulous cook! We arrived early in the morning at the train station and Sreeranj was there to meet us without us knowing - what a very pleasant surprise. He organised for us to attend a Theyyam performance and was always on hand to ask questions but never intrusive. The abundant birdlife right there is great to watch. As we were the only ones there for the first couple of days, it was really nice to get to know Sreeranj and the history of the area. I can't recommend this place highly enough!

Having been to India quite a few times, my wife and two children wanted a Christmas that was by the sea and away from the usual tourist trail.

Close to the busy town of Kannur, KK Homestay is most easily accessed from the Calicut Airport about 2 hours away.

Really beautiful and secluded spot. The beach (also stunning and safe to swim) is a stones throw away. There are a few other home stays nearby but one doesn't feel crowded.

If you are looking for a Goa experience then this will not be for you. Very quite and beautiful in the middle of nature. Food excellent and host really relaxed and sociable.

Would I go again? For sure.

Roland

Room Tip: I would try and book upstairs with a balcony

Our family of 6 spent 2 weeks here in december, it's as close to paradise as I've ever seen. As described by many others on here, the house is in a fabulous location with a beach very close by, and surrounded by abundant wildlife. We saw dolphins on our first day. Sreeranj is a fantastic host, great cook, and all round wonderful person who, along with his lovely family, made us all feel really welcome from the moment we arrived. As other reviewers have noted, this is quite a remote place, which for us worked well. There are no tourist bars, and you need to get extras, (such as beers!) from Kannur, but with Sreeranj's assistance anything is possible, he seems to know everybody, and can arrange fair priced rickshaws. He also knows a lot about the local Theyyam culture and arranged for us to visit a truly amazing 4am ceremony which was a fantastic experience. Another reviewer had mentioned the lack of a hammock - I mentioned this to Sreeranj on the first day, and within 48 hours he came back from his daily shopping trip with a lovely woven hammock. As we all came to see, this was typical of this kind and thoughtful man who genuinely takes pride, and pleasure, in making his guests feel welcome and cared for. We all enjoyed our wonderful mealtimes, not only for the generous supply of delicious and varied dishes, but also for the interesting and informative conversations with our host. My only reservation in writing this well deserved review is that I hope it doesn't get so busy that he won't be able to fit us in when we want to go back.

Room Tip: We had the 3 upstairs rooms with balcony, would rcommend these.

We have spent 3 nights in KK Heritage and it has been a wonderful stay.

The room was very big, bright and sunny. Simple but clean, with a comfortable bed, mosquito net and a spacious bathroom. We stayed upstairs, so our room had a balcony, with nice views over the backwaters.

The owner was extremely welcoming and helpful. He managed to organize us a visit to a Theyyam ceremony, which was really amazing. He had a trusted rishaw driver, who picked us up at ridiculously early hours and was never late.

The food was delicious, 100% home made from seasonal, local ingredients. The meals were different every day, portions were huge, topped with fruits and chai. The owner answered our numerous questions regarding the local Keralan cousine, with passion and insights.

Finally, the surroundings - the part of Kannur (it 10km outside of the main town) where we stayed is absolutely amazing. The beach is virtually empty and clean and it's a 3 min. walk from the homestay. Lots of birds to spot. A perfect, quiet getaway.

Overall, a great expierience.

Stayed here for a month...luckily it was off season so had the chance to enjoy the many many different kinds of birds. Braminy kites,
, kingfishers, white cranes, rufous tree pie , many friendly crows, mynahs, pheasants, huge cranes, and many do not know the names of. Seems likes a new one came every day. Butterflies. Canal/river is right in front so you can watch the birds fishing.. The beach is 5 minutes walk away, usually deserted if off season. Could be a very romantic place. Only off points: the wifi is very off and on...and be prepared for extremely spicy food..if you want something special, examples real butter, honey, organic jam, bring it with you as town is over 6 miles away..and be prepared to cook yourself if you want something different. The helper, Suma, is very sweet and tries her best although she speaks only Malayam.. Seeranj is there when there are several guests or more, his wife Joyti works full time so is very rarely there. Calm and relaxing when off season and not crowded there.. Room clean but very basic, only one room has AC so request if you will need it.. It gets extremely HOT even end November. Bring extra strong mosquito repellent..they laugh at the herbal citronella stuff. A very nice place to spend some days relaxing.

Room Tip: Ocean views only from upstairs rooms..staircase not for the elderly..all rooms quiet..only one has A...

Excellent place to relax. Not for activity lovers.

My suggestion:
Go for early morning beach walks/Watch sunset on the lonely beach
Watch some lazy birds roam by,
ride a boat along the backwaters,
pick up a book; sit and relax on the balcony overlooking the backwater and a thick coconut grove.

Place is not out of the world. But the service of the couple, and serenity of the place will make you feel awesome.

I came here in May and had only intended to stay for a week ... but I ended up spending over three weeks here. And not just for the food, which was far, far better than I had expected (other guest houses I have stayed in that have provided meals have been very disappointing). The secret here is Ranji and Lizzie and their lighter approach to Keralan cooking. Not to mention their understanding that every meal should be different!

No, the reason I stayed on had more to do with the hospitality – Ranji's family are delightful, relaxed and very accommodating, which is wonderful for a solo traveller – and the fact that Ranji knows so much about this special part of the Keralan coastline, having been born, raised and educated in the area. Lizzie, too, made my days there so easy. We got on famously, me making up for knowing NO Malayalam by acting (especially when there were spiders to be 'rehomed') and getting to know her daily routine.

The days drifted by and, contrary to one of the reviews below, my room was spotless. here were hardly any cockroaches; let's face it, they are almost everywhere in India, and where I live too, in southern Africa. And there are always mozzies about. It's by a slow-moving lagoon, after all.

Daily routine is also a source of wonder. Kannur Beach House (which is not to be mistaken for the guest house on its right) is very much part of the local village community, into which you can step and walk through without feeling that you are intruding – so long as you respect the unwritten modest dress code. (This does not apply to the beach, although females will, of course, be stared at by teenage boys.)

Here, even non-twitchers will find themselves watching the birds from the verandah and balcony. The wildlife and the sunsets more than make up for the 'lack' of TV for those who would normally rely on it for entertainment. Then, of course, there is the ocean and the beach, which a mere two-minute walk away. Or beaches, for those with more energy. Oh, and did I mention the food?

Back to the rooms. Clean and simple, but not spartan. A quiet, multi-speed ceiling fan and light switches about the headboard! No more getting out of bed to turn off/on the light/fan. There is one room with air-conditioning for those that cannot sleep in warm rooms. Sheets? Cotton, clean. Blankets available upon request for people like me who feel cold at night if there is a temperature change. My only criticism, which is one I can say of most guest houses in India, is the lack of a bedside table and light.

I will definitely return and can honestly say that after several 3-month trips to India, and as a solo traveller, this is one of the very few places that I have found restful and reinvigorating at the same time. For time out from 'going to SEE' and 'HAVE to do' and having to deal with the 'come my shop' requests, Kannur Beach house – and its environs – is the spot for me. It will be even better next year, as the garden has been redesigned and the monsoon get it growing at warp speed.
