Kannur Beach House is something of an institution and has extremely loyal return customers. Its location is idyllic and the meals are delicious. Breakfast and dinner are inclusive and lunch is provided for a modest extra cost. Rosi and Nazir are friendly, knowledgeable hosts who offer crucial assistance with things to do locally, such as finding out about where theyyems are happening and arranging transport. However, the rooms are very basic and there is no air-conditioning, which means that they can be extremely hot at night.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are reached by steep, rickety wooden stairs. It is a good idea to bring a torch.

We just loved Rosi and Nazir's mix of homely rooms, gorgeous setting of river, lagoon and beach, amazing food (we had breakfast, lunch and dinner) and convivial eating at a long shared table. There's someting uniquely homespun but relaxing about Kannur Beach House. Many of the guests seemed to be on their umteenth visit and we want to return as well. The theyam, the local goldsmith, the variety of beaches were all great enhancements but as many reviewers say, it's all down to the warmth and helpfulness of Rosi and Nazir and their kitchen helpers. And the food: lots of different delicious dishes at every meal! Heaven!

Room Tip: I think they all have their individual charms. We were on the first floor with an amazing sunset vie...

This was our fourth stay at 'KBH'.People are sometimes puzzled that we return to the same place when there so many places to go in India.... these are people who have never had the fortune of staying at the magical KBH, otherwise they would know.

KBH has a superb location, offering fabulous views of the beach and backwaters.

If you fancy a day on the beach there are three stunning, quiet beaches within a few minutes walk. This year the closest beach, which is about 1km long, was more crowded than in past years.... yes, there were a vast six people on it at one point(there were more dolphins in the sea than people on the beach) .... Try getting that in Varkaka or Kovalam!

Walking through the quiet paths around the backwaters is delightful and offers an opportunity to see stunning wildlife and to meet the warm and friendly locals.

The peace and tranquility of KBH are reasons enough to return. However, the main attraction is the warmth and hospitality of Rozi, Nasir and their family who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. You are treated as a guest in the true sense of the word, rather than simply as a customer. Partway through our stay we travelled to Bekal where we stayed at an expensive 5 * hotel ( review to follow) and can honestly say that many of the staff working there could learn from Rozi and Nasir's hospitality.

The food is quite simply stunning (thanks again Ambika and Sainaba) and likely to be the best you will experience in Kerala. I am still amazed that despite offering a selection of four or five main dishes each evening, the same dish was not offered twice during our 16 night stay. Rozi, please write a cookbook -or at least lend us Ambika or Sainaba, we will return them (honestly!)

The rooms are relatively basic but clean and have everything you need including an ensuite with hot water, fan and mosquito net. However, if you want a TV and air conditioning to drown out the sound of the ocean I'm afraid you will be disappointed -these are not available.

So, stunning scenery, incredible food and genuine hosts are the reasons we (and lots of others) return to stay with Rozi and Nasir and are never disappointed. Thanks ever so much for yet another fabulous holiday.

Gareth, Rachel and little George

As "returning guests" for the last five years , we have had another fantastic stay and met up with many friends we have made at Beach House during these visits. What draws us all back to stay here ? There are no porters to carry your bags to your room, no air conditioning in your room and you cannot get food at any time of day or night from an a la carte menu. What you do get is the warmest of welcomes from Rosi and her family into their beautiful home.We have stayed in most of the rooms over the years and all have been comfortable and clean with en suite shower & toilet.A fan cools the room when the sea breeze dies down in the evening and a net keeps the mosquitos at bay.The view over the lagoon and out to sea is stunning , especially at sunset. The safe swimming beaches are unspoilt and often deserted. What better way to start the day than a swim along the beach as the sun rises over the palm trees;kingfishers swoop past as you make your way back to the house for that early cup of tea.Breakfast ,lunch & dinner are served at set times and the food is really delicious. There is plenty of choice to keep everyone happy and fresh fish daily.
There are lovely walks along paths amongst the palm trees and many birds to see along the way.We sometimes borrow the canoe and paddle up the backwater nearby to see more wildlife.
We travel into Kannur by bus or tuk tuk to do any shopping - spices, fabrics & shawls, glasses and sweets. The market is buzzing with life and the stall holders happy to chat.
Visits to the goldsmith and the tailor can be arranged and Rosi always seems to know about the timing & location of theyyams.
We find it very easy to just sit and watch the fishermen , the toddy man ,the farmer with his cow and the birds circling overhead......... or just plain snooze in a hammock.......
We like to enjoy this unspoilt place and the warm hospitality provided by Rosi & Nazir and think of it as our home from home in India

So, our third visit to Kannur Beach House in as many years; what draws us back?

Location: we love its combination of remoteness and accessibility. KBH is at the end of a rough country track which ever way you approach it, so far from the madding crowd... apart from the sound of the waves on the beach and the birds, we can occasionally hear the plaintive call of a distant train; yet when we want get to bustling Kannur to buy material, spices, prescription sunglasses or Special Mysore Pak, we can catch a bus for 7 Rupees (yes, it's gone up) or take an auto-rickshaw and either way be back in time for all important lunch! KBH is on an unspoilt backwater that is teeming with birds and wildlife - we saw mongoose, paradise flycatchers but sadly only four different types of kingfisher this year - where has the pied kingfisher gone? The backwater is accessible by foot on the local paths or by the guest house canoe (no extra charge). The first beach is a two minute stroll across a footbridge, there are others within walking distance; all are quiet and totally uncommercial - no sun-bed wars here!

Food: an amazing variety of superb excellent Keralan dishes at every meal. The wide choice meets the needs of vegetarians and those, like us, who love fresh fish will not be disappointed. Meal times are set, as you would expect in a home-stay, and you join in with other guests and the family at a long outdoor table in a covered eating area. Tea and coffee are available for early risers before breakfast and in the afternoon too.

Rooms: these all have views over the backwater to the sea and the glorious sunsets. Yes, they are basic, but clean, with en suite toilet/shower, balcony/sitting out area, a fan and a mosquito net they meet our needs.

People: the local people we met on our walks were all quick to smile and seemed pleased to meet us and practise their English - especially the children. Our hosts, Rosi and Nazir, their children and the two kitchen staff and the international guests are a delight and we have made many friends. KBH is a true homestay - we feel as though it is our special home in India.

We are a couple that has spent many mounths ,during several years of holidays in South India.
KBH is the place we always want to return to.Many other guests do the same ! Why ?
One of the reasons are that this is a REAL homestay=the nice family and the friendly atmos-
phere makes you happy !
Peaceful surroundings, exellent food and real good beaches with safe swiming are some other
good reasons. But if you are looking for a five star hotell, try somewhere else!

another year, another kannur beach house stay, the amount of returning visitors to this wonderful homestay is testament to the warm and relaxed atmosphere cultivated by rosi and nazir, the food is fabulous[thanks ambika and sainaba] and plentiful, the rooms all have great views of the sea and dolphins are regularly spotted, the birdlife is colourful and prolific, the backwaters can be explored by canoe and are wonderful for spotting said birdlife, hammocks are strung from the palm trees, perfect for siesta time, wifi is available for those who need to keep in touch, walk in any direction and discover this beautiful part of kerala. we have now visited 5 of the last 6 years, but for us the USP are rosi and nazir and , yes you can have better equipped rooms, yes the west coast has many more luxurious resorts, try goa or kovalam if this is what you want, but when you read these reviews please remember this is a homestay and your hosts are providing just that, a unique non commercialized window on an as yet unspoiled paradise, enjoy while you still can before the tourist brigade demanding aircon, minibars, umbrellas sunloungers and swimming pools move in and forever destroy this beautiful spot on the malabar coast, thanks for letting us share your world if only for a few fleeting weeks of the year.
