“a little bit of heaven”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

This is the second time we have stayed at the Frog and Fern in Chimaninimani. Each of the individual cottages are full of character (and well equipped) and the hosts Jane and Dee give lots of advise on local history and walks. They helped us by arranging for porters to carry our 4 days packs up Bailey's Folly and took us to base camp by car and collected us 4 days alter with cold drinks and no mention of how we looked or smelt! The original art work (mostly by Dee) in each cottage adds to the beauty of the accommodation and the fireplaces keep everyone cosy in the evenings. I cannot recommend this place highly enough and I am planning my next visit.

It was our first trip to Chimanimani and we spent 3 nights at Frog and Fern cottages in August 2013. Taking into account the remoteness of the area, I would have to say that our cottage was one of the best equipped self contained units that I have ever stayed in. The kitchen had both gas and electric cooking facilities, all the crockery and cutlery we needed and more. The bed/sitting area was large and very comfortable and the bathroom had plenty of hot water! Our cottage had a fantastic bar/sitting area outside and all 3 cottages are within lovely gardens. Each cottage is differently themed and contains lots of personal touches. We stayed in the one without the fireplace. The owners Jane and Dee made us very welcome and Dee's wildlife paintings adorn the walls. The girls' knowledge of the area is daunting and they are more than happy to advise how, what and where. There is a small shop in the village but it is best to take supplies with you. We stocked up in Harare. The Chimanimani area was lush and stunning and the weather perfect. We would heartily recommend F&F to anyone visiting the eastern highlands - it really is a magical place.

The owners are being frightfully modest in their description of this place. I spent my whole summer (er, winter in that hemisphere) in Zimbabwe, and this was far and away the best accommodations I found. It may sound over the top, but our cabin was actually one of the most magical and charming places I've stayed anywhere in the world.

My friends and I stayed in Mzanje Cabin, which we all loved. Let’s first say that the shower there–hot and with good pressure–was a Zimbabwean miracle the likes of which we didn't find again. And having stayed in a bunch of hostels and cabins over the course of our travels, we were extremely grateful that Jane provided a some basics like coffee, tea, salt and sugar in the cabin’s clean, well-appointed kitchen. The rest of the cabin was better than comfy–charming eclectic decor, a warm stove, and lots of quirky, sweet personal touches from the owners, making it feel much more like a home than a hotel. The one and only (very small) negative thing I would say is that the large bed in the cabin was two mattresses instead of one, which isn’t super comfortable for a couple--that might not be true in all the cabins, though.

Aside from the cottages (and the location, which is pretty special too), the best thing about this place is the owners, whose passion for the spot is abundantly obvious. They designed the gorgeous, unique cabins themselves and had them built from local materials. They provide lots of local knowledge (and hiking maps!) and keep a blog of local happenings. And Dee creates and sells beautiful paintings of the natural beauty they're so passionate about.

In short, Frog & Fern is romantic and beautiful and inviting and so unique. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Room Tip: Mzanje Cabin is, I think, the smallest and least expensive of the cottages. It's also the least...
