The Southern Gateway was the main entrance for the Great Stupa indicated by the Ashoka Pillar near it. It was a practice in those times to erect Pillar before Stupa came up. This is the only Gateway at Sanchi where four lions are seated back to back supporting the main pillars.
The Pillars of the Gateway show: the first sermon by Buddha at Sarnath, Dharma chakra having 32 spokes, Ashoka visiting a stupa, a stupa constructed by Ashoka at Bodhgaya around Bodhi Tree. There is a beautiful depiction of Ashoka and his two Queens when Ashoka fainted seeing withering of Bodhi Tree, which he loved. This Panel must be one of the rarest anywhere depicting Ashoka and his two queens.
The Southern Gateway also has depiction of the birth of Buddha, Ashoka visit to Ramagrama stupa to get relics of Buddha and its defence by Nagas, seven Manushi Buddhas, the Great Departure of Buddha leaving Kapilvastu the panel showing horse Kantaka and attendant Chandaka, the siege of Kushinagar after Buddha's Death for his relics.
The Gateway is one of the best specimens of Indian heritage of Art and Culture. I wish to spend more time admiring each panel and the stories inscribed on it.

The main stupa of Sanchi, i.e. Stupa#1 was originally built during the reign of emperor Ashoka. But, later on additions were kept on happening in and around the Stupas. It is from here that the Mehendra, son of Ashoka left for Ceylon to spread the Buddhism in the world. The four Gateways- one each in four cardinal directions were erected by Satvahana Kings. Out of these, the southern gateway is the oldest one- being carved by the ivory sculptors of Vidisha. Like all other gates, this also depicts the life of lord Buddha and also the Jataka tales.
The most interesting part of this gate is the support of pillars on the lion capital on both pillars. These are same as Sarnath Lions- four lions sitting back to back facing the four directions.
The gateways are beautiful to look at and if studied in details- lots of stories can be seen depicted in the stones.
