Stayed here overnight prior to boarding the Bilbao ferry. 20 minutes easy drive from ferry terminal. Arrived late afternoon. Warm welcome at reception. Spacious and spotlessly clean rooms. Secure parking in locked garage building worth the 8 Euros (street parking cost 5). Hotel has pleasant public areas and serves good food in both restaurant and coffee shop. The esplanade is a minute's walk away and ideal for an evening stroll by the harbour. Overall a very good choice.

We chose this hotel from a search on Tripadvisor as the last hotel on a three week road trip around northern Spain and northern Portugal, solely because of the ease of getting to it from the A8 motorway and its proximity to Bilbao for our return ferry crossing to the UK. When we arrived we thought it might be a little more noisy and glitzy than hotels we normally choose. In addition, the hotel had cancelled the booking made some months earlier due to a 'mix up' over a credit card number, claiming that they had tried to contact us. Luckily we had a copy of the original email confirmation and they found us a room. Not a good start. However, the room was very comfortable, the receptionist was very polite and apart from a little TV noise from an adjoining room for an hour or so in the evening, we had a good nights sleep and awoke to the sound of the waves lapping on the nearby beach. Very pleasant! The hotel also offers a secure garage for the car (small extra cost). Castro Urdiales was a nicer town than we had expected but as we didn't want to wait until after 10pm for dinner at one of the many small restaurants around the scenic harbour, we ate at the hotel and had an adequate if not very adventurous dinner. Breakfast was a little uninspiring too..but as we had to leave early to get the ferry, we weren't too troubled. Once again its a pity that Tripadvisor don't have another category between 'Average' and 'Very Good', because I would say that the hotel experience was probably really only 'Good'.

The third and final hotel of our 7 night visit to N.West Spain was the ‘Hotel Las Rocas’ in Castro Urdialis. First and foremost, I cannot find any faults at all with this hotel and I will relate to it later, after I have mentioned the town. Castro Urdialis is a typical Spanish small coastal town with small working fishing boats and a marina and it is situated a comfortable distance from Bilbao. Hotel Las Rocas is situated about a short mile from the town and in its vicinity is a small, clean, fine sand beach some bars and restaurants. There is an easy to negotiate promenade walk into the town (about 15 minutes with plenty of seating?) with views over the balustrade, to your right, of the fishing boats and marina. Closer to the town it opens out into a lawned area and flower beds (the Tourist Office is in this area). Beyond the Tourist Office you can move left and enter into the town where there are shops and markets (the fruit and veg market is a bit pathetic but the fish and meat is typical Spanish and bustling). Continue on, around the harbour and you come to the access to the old gothic church, it involves a climb but is worth it. From here you have access to a tower that gives you panoramic views of the town (again well worth the climb). Approaching the harbour there are a number of restaurants and we chose one. My wife had a nice piece of white fish about 7 onz. I had pulpo (octopus) they didn’t do a tapas, only a ration or half ration. I had half ration and it was much more than I wanted but it was not wasted and with a couple of large white wines about 13 euros.
HOTEL Las Rocas. We stayed at this hotel in May last year 2012. We stayed for 2 nights as part of another touring holiday along the coast. I had read plenty of reviews and learned that some of the rooms had terraces. After booking the hotel through Hotels.com I telephone the hotel and requested a room with a terrace. I was told these rooms were executive and required an additional supplement of 30 euros per night, I agreed. When we arrived we were allocated room 502 and we were very impressed by the size of the room, the size of the bed, it was enormous, the bathroom would have been better with a walk in shower but the over the bath shower was powerful. The terrace was a good size with views over towards the beach about 150 yards away. Breakfast was very typical of a good 4* hotel with plenty of choice of cereals, cold meats, cheeses, preserves etc. There was the added facility of ordering a fresh cooked breakfast. On the morning of our departure my wife had placed a cashmere cardigan over the back of her chair at breakfast and left it. It was soon missed when we arrived home and I telephoned the hotel. They had it and would package it and post it on. It was conducted very efficiently and pleasantly and cost 10 euros. All in all our stay at Hotel was very relaxing so much so that when we planned our little tour this year it had to be included. Particularly for its convenience to Bilbao Port were Brittany Ferries sail to/from, about 12 miles drive. For dining I would recommend Restaurant Bitacara overlooking the beach. We ate there twice, Friday and Sunday. Weekday 3 course menu 12 euros including a Rioja wine, Sunday, 22 euros same menu? The Las Rocas has a restaurant but for 2 courses it was 27 euros which did not include wine or tax though the choice did look appealing.

We had first stop here on our four days on the camino de Santiago. We experienced good and personal service and comfortable beds. The hotel is a few steps from the Malecon and the beach, and less then 10 min from the old city. Warmly recommended.

We arrived 4 days ago for 3 nights and we are still here! We extended our stay because it is a great hotel! We arrived in trepidation because it was booked at short notice and one of the few places available in the area. We were so lucky. It is fantastic. Having spent a week in spain struggling because we have no spanish, we have found that the staff here, despite not having a lot of english, have gone out of their way to be so accommodating in helping us. They are great. And the rooms are the best designed hotel rooms i have stayed in. Top marks!

Stayed here on our way back from touring France & Northern Spain on the motorbike, as it is about half an hours drive to Bilbao to catch the ferry home.

The hotel is lovely, very attentive staff, even though we don't speak Spanish, we got everything that we asked for. The rooms were a good size, spotlessly clean, the bathroom was clean, with a great shower. We were at the back of the hotel, so didn't have a view, that didn't matter as the room is only somewhere to relax and sleep.

We stayed 2 nights, and ate in the cafe, as well as the restaurant, the food was very good, the breakfast was the best that we had through out our tour, the choice was great, the worst bit was deciding what you were going to have as there was so much choice.

In a nut shell, great hotel, great staff, great location, would I go again, that's a definite yes, and I would certainly recommend to others.

Castro Urdiales is a beautiful place to visit, lovely beach, marina, bars, and the beautiful old church.

(People sometimes say they don't know where someone stayed, but I truly think the prior review was of a different hotel. The breakfast, for example, was a huge buffet that was open all day long, so that for starters seems to indicate the wrong place!)

Anyway, we planned to stay for 2 nights, but loved it so we stayed for 3. We had a fabulous corner room, #316. Our view of the beach and boardwalk gave us a feeling for where we were, with the proper remove to have our privacy. The A/C worked great, elevators were fast, the bed, bathroom, and spacious room were terrific. Wifi is promised at the hotel in general, and worked inconsistently in the room, but consistently in the public areas.

Castro Urdiales was a big surprise for us, as we chose it for its proximity to an event and the quality of the hotel. We loved the ability to walk forever on the boardwalk and then onto cliffs overlooking the sea. The night scene in the old part of the city was a real glimpse into Spanish social culture, with people of every age congregating on the streets.

We happened upon a wonderful restaurant, Restaurante Ardigales, on the street of the same name. I'll review it.

Loved the city, loved the hotel. Easy access to the highway, parking, and sights nearby.
