“IN ABRA MINCH, YOU MUST STAY HERE”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

i am an experienced world traveler of mature years - picky, but not overly so, who does a lot of reaserch before my travels, so i am generally pleased with my accommodation choices.
this is THE place to stay in abra minch. stay nowhere else. perched on the cliff crest, overlooking the jungle, mountains, and 2 lakes, iat is spectacular. there is a choice of the pricier view-tukals or the no-view ones. all of the view ones were taken as i was here in january and didn't make my reservation far enough in advance and there are many little tour groups here. i was disappointed but it turned out ok with it in the end as the tukal i had was quite luxurious, well, kind of, anyway, and one spends one's time on the dining room/bar terrace with the view so one doesn't really need th view n onew's own tukal. food was great. service was great. no barking dogs or wailing mullahs. an ATM in the lobby - how rural ethiopia has grown up !! it can be a bit of a hike from your tukal to the dining area, let alone the reception, but just deal with it. the reception was vague, and a bit confused, and i could see how some of the other reviewers could have had some problems. so i would reconfirm everything with the manager every day for a week before arriving. get his name.

Room Tip: don't get a room too near the diing terrace or they will perhaps keep you awake

Paradise Lodge is attractively situated within a large compound on a steep hillside on the escarpment overlooking the forest and hot springs opposite the mountainous Bridge of God dividing Lakes Abaya and Chamo. The huts are spread some distance down the hillside (making the reception and restaurant quite a hike from your room, particularly if you've forgotten something, several times), some, single huts with an unobstructed view, others, smaller, divided into two hotel rooms per hut, and set back from the escarpment edge, with a view of the next hut or adjacent building works. The larger huts are simply more spacious with terraces with a view of the landscape. The smaller divided huts are furnished with heavy wood furniture and four-poster beds with mosquito nets cast loosely over the bed frame, this means the rooms, small to start with, become claustrophobic and more difficult to move around than they need to be - they're OK otherwise, just really quite dark and cramped. There is an evident difference in comfort between the two types of hut, though the larger ones are only twenty dollars more than the small. They need to keep on top of maintenance, some of the fittings and fixtures are starting to look a little tired and this is not an old lodge. Service standards vary depending on luck with the individual who serves you - this needs to be worked on, particularly in reception. Waiting staff are very nice, though if you are not part of one of the many a large tour groups you may need to make your presence and needs known, they otherwise cope well with busy dinner sittings. Food consists of a varied buffet dinner and breakfast (the promising, but erratically functional, ice-cream machine never worked during my stay), in a very nice restaurant with an outside terrace and views across both lakes. They provide a very reasonable laundry service. The restaurant and other facilities (swimming pool, spa, conference/function rooms), seem to be frequently used by locals (weddings, conferences, etc.) from this rapidly growing university town, Some of the "ends of the earth" remoteness is being lost but no matter, if tourism helps provide social infrastructure for locals then this development is a very healthy thing for everyone. This is a nice new hotel with a few rough edges but is a very pleasant addition to the now very busy southern tourist circuit.

This must be the best choice in Arba Minch. It’s situated a little out of the town centre, with pleasant views of the hill and Lake Chamo. The rooms are spacious, the design based on traditional huts, with a high ceiling. The beds are fairly comfortable with good mosquito nets; there’s a fridge (and TV, but only Ethiopian channels) and a fan, and a balcony. The room lighting is a bit dim (very common in Ethiopia), and the bathroom isn’t that well designed, but the shower is excellent. Food in the restaurant is also very good. There is a swimming pool which looked fine, though I didn’t use it.
The only negative is the reception desk service. One of the receptionists is efficient and pleasant, but the others are slow and useless. The reception area also has an ATM in working order (takes VISA), and WiFi.

We stayed in this facility for two nights. The lodge is nice. But I would recommended everybody to avoid this place. On the afternoon of our arrival we booked two cars for the trip to the national park at 7 a.m. This was confirmed by the reception. What was our surprise the other day at the morning when we came to the reception and nobody was aware of any cars to be available for us! The receptionist just told us that no cars will be available. As we were here just for one whole day it completely ruined our stay. It made no sense for us to come here, all the long troublesome way. Really disgusting behaviour and absolute disrespect to the guests!

Considering its location, the Paradise Lodge is very a great choice. The rooms are in individual cabins, the doubles were spacious. However, those in our group who had single rooms all complained they were tiny, and when one person was witched to a double she noted it was at least 3X as large. So, if you do get a single, find something to complain about it and try to get moved to a double. Our room had two large beds with nice mosquito netting, a refrigerator, TV, plenty of electric outlets, good hot water in a large bathroom. Really, the room could hardly be better. The view from the rooms that overlook the lake are wonderful - same view form the restaurant. The view from the other side is of a construction project. The food was very good, and the breakfast buffet was very nice. WiFi available but only from the reception area. While we were there we had a few 5 - 10 minute electric outages, so bring a flashlight after dark just in case.

Room Tip: Ask for a lakeview room, and if a single try to get into a double instead.

Anywhere else the standard would be down the scale but this is the Rift Valley in Africa.
Clean rooms, working bathrooms, reliable flush toilets, good food, beer and a view to die for both from the terrace and from our private patio. Oh and did I mention the swimming pool and free wifi?
Get real people, Africa is different, you can't expect the same standards as in Europe or the US. This place is just fabulous despite the idiosyncrasies.
