“Excellent Location”
Reviewed May 2, 2012

Kanuka ridge is located less than a five minute drive from Marahau Beach (one of the most famous beaches in Abel Tasman, always depicted on the post cards). It is a little ways from a town or grocery store, but there is a great restaurant, the Fat Tui just down the street from Marahau. A little beyond the Fat Tui is the entrance to the hiking trails and access to the water taxi and kayak rentals.

The rooms were clean and comfortable with sliding glass doors and a porch overlooking the woods. The owner was friendly and knowledgeable.

My only complaint would be that the dorms were up the hill from the kitchen/bathroom (which was co-ed) and there were only two showers and three toilets for the whole hostel. It got a little crowded in the mornings. Other than that though, the hostel was very nice and convenient. I would highly recommend staying here.

Small chalet/huts, out of town on top of a hill in the forest - setting is beautiful & quiet :) kitchen & lounge are fine & there are small clearings for outside seating & a BBQ if weather is good. Bathrooms were good size & rooms spotless & nicely decorated. Staff v friendly.

The kitchen and lounge were excellent, enough bathroom facilities, the place was clean and the hosts extremely commited and friendly. We had a room facing the the back with a lovely porch, so best views of all the wonderful birds (Tuis) in the trees. The room was just big enough and there was enough space to put your suitcases and clothes, even some coat hangers.

We stayed for 3 nights in an ensuite double. Room itself was on small side, but completely adequate, and bathroom, communal area and overall cleanliness great for a backpackers. Marahau easily accessible if you have a car. Internet very slow, but not a problem if you are there to explore abal tasman, for which this is an ideal base. Overall, great value for money.

Clean & comfortable rooms & helpful owners. The communal kitchen area is clean & well equipped. There are only 2 sofas so the communal area can be a bit crowded. Good value or money.

I visited this place with my boyfriend at the end of November. I found the common area to be quite cozy and the kitchen area adequate. I loved how it was tucked away in the woods with hammoks and birds. I was not happy about getting a double bunk bed triple when I had booked and paid for a double but at least we still had the room to ourselves. I would definitely not recommend this place if you don't have a car. It is not as close to Abel Tasman as their website implies. This poor woman staying with us didn't have a car and it took her forever to get anywhere. If you have a car though, it's fine. I found it to be much more peaceful than Old McDonalds farm where I stayed the previous year.

Hi! Sorry for my delayed comment, I wake up everyday and I still remembering the GREAT TIME I expended in Kanuka Ridge, at the beginning I supposed to stay 3 days and to be honest I just fall in love about the place, so I stay maybe 8 days? So quick! The owners are very helpful, and GREAT PERSONS! nice!, and the place... ufff what to say, you are totally in PARADISE, in the mountains, with that beautiful sky and at night you can enjoy all stars, I was shearing the room and everything was great. Close to the Abel Tasman, 10 min cycling, ohh such a lovely place, and nice people, clean, with cottages, very nice kitchen who makes yourself feel at home all the time, (that's why you don't want to leave and keep staying...) I hardly recommend this place, well I miss this place A LOT! I wouldn't mind to live over there FOREVER! If you are looking for people this year let me know! Big hug guys. I really miss you, and the Paradise, and NZ and my time over there!
