Brunswick House
Reviewed February 14, 2008

Brilliant bed and breakfast. Full of character. Huge, comfortable beds. The lounge is beautiful, with open fire, comfy sofas and plenty of books and leaflets on the gorgeous surrounding countryside. The breakfasts were extremely tasty and filling, and the evening meal was outstanding. Excellent vegetarian option.

Off street parking is available around the back of the building, down a very thin passage!

Creaky floorboards from above disturbed me slightly in my sleep, but this building is two hundred and fifty years old, and it was only at 7.30am, when it was almost time to get up for breakfast anyway.

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We would definitely stay again. Bargain at £120 for three nights (stay three nights for the price of two, off peak). The evening meal was £20 per head and included three courses with tea/coffee.

Tripadvisor has done it again! A very nice stay. Excellent food for vegetarians. Certainly eat in - thoroughly recommended. Rooms nicely decorated if a little small. Nice choice of wines.

The other reviewer summed up some of the great features of this B&B (and the traffic noise which is beyond the control of owner to a point). In short, a lovely place to stay. The owner was very considerate and helpful and even remembered a special food request. Fab! Nice choice and healthy breakfast plus if we'd wanted we could have had a full English as well. Room well appointed, utterly clean, cosy and cute. Shower and bath great. The lounge and dining area both lovely too. If it wasn't for the traffic noise (we were on the front) I would definitely go back there again, it's nothing air-conditioning and double glazing couldn't fix. Or ask for a room on the rear of the house. That would make it a great value, quality romantic getaway and base for travels in the stunning County Durham, which right now (October) is in full autumn colours!

We picked Middleton-in-Teesdale from the map, and were very glad we
had. The Brunswick House had a most helpful owner, a stream at the rear,
parking, and a beautifully decorated bedroom that was a pleasure to sleep
in.

The street was a bit noisy (we were in the front), as streets seem to
be everywhere in the early morning. People in the back didn't notice
it. There's a parking lot that you squeeze into through a narrow drive, but you can also park on the street.

As well as a dining room, there's a pleasant living room with a squashy
sofa and many books about the area and its attractions. It's a great
area for hikers, and the hikers were friendly and fun to talk to.

If you're not a hiker, a short walk brings you to fields and cows and
lovely views. And the driving is great (except for the terrifying
thing about everyone's being on the left). You keep gasping with wonder at
the beautiful countryside laid out before you.

Breakfasts were yummy, with yogurt and cereal and fruit as well as
bacon and eggs, etc. Mmmm!

Wish I could go back!
