Five of us ate here last week. We had been in before for a drink more than a year ago and found the place to be dingy and unfriendly however we had been told it had changed hands and was very good now so we decided to give it a go.

We arrived about 6.45pm. The outside of the Hotel is covered with hanging pots and looked brilliant. The dining room has been refurbished and was clean and light although the bar area still does not feel welcoming and the loos need some work. We sat on sofas whilst we ordered from the fairly extensive menu. Two of us had chops, one the steak pie, one the Sirloin and one an omlette.

We had to wait about 50 minutes for food despite the restaurant being fairly empty initially although I think some hotel guests had ordered whilst sitting in the bar. By the time we left it was quite busy.

The chops, steak pie and sirloin were all excellent and fairly priced. The only criticism was that we were only given one moderate portion of vedgetables between 3 of us and were told we could have more but decided not to as we had wasited so long,

The omlette I thought was overpriced (£9.50 from memory) and I heard another guest complain to the waitress that she would not pay so much for it.

The waitress said that there was only one chef on as the previuos night they were so quiet and she was quite apologetic. The coffee was not great.

Overall I thought this place was very good and would go back.

Very good food. Great selection and well presented. The breakfasts were the best I have had anywhere. Poached eggs perfect and great pots of tea.

We stayed and ate at the Teesdale and found it to be an excellent hotel. The food was imaginative and well prepared and the service very high class
the room was rather small but spotless and the bed was comfortable. We visited during very hot weather and appreciated that the windows could be opened very wide. Definitely worth another visit and then village is lucky to have this hotel and the Forresters across the road both of such a high standard but very different.

Only the bar was open but we could see into the restaurant room and that looked clean, crisp and cared for. The bar had a well worn, traditional 'regulars' feel to it as we entered so expectations weren't high, but we were with friends who had a dog and these days they find it's hard to find places on the internet who allow dogs in. the bar room has a roaring open fire and lots of comfy, well-upolstered chairs so really comfy after a brisk, walk along the river.

The hotel is in a bit of a time-warp, and the ground floor could do with an update, especially as the first thing you pass as you walk in are the toilets... however, the landlady was wonderful, warm, friendly and gave you the feeling you were cared for and looked after.

As we sat down people started to chat to us- really welcoming and these days is a rarity- recommending the puddings [especially the ginger sponge and custard] which is always a good sign.

The home cooked steak and ale pie, the local venison sausage on mustard mash and the chicken stuffed with their own recipe wild garlic pesto were fantastic... with home made mushy peas, perfectly crisp but fluffy chips and a side order of pickled cabbage for the sausages. It was wholesome, tasty and freshly cooked to order.

Good Black Sheep bitter- the barman knows what he's doing doing and does it very well!

The light and spicy ginger sponge and proper custard didn't disappoint either! Good coffee which was a revelation for a traditional pub.

Just visiting for the evening meal but had a scroll through the pictures of the bedrooms on the website - they look like they have a traditional, homely feel too, so not trendy boutique quality, but what a happy place... I bet the breakfast is fantastic!

Thoroughly recommend the food and the atmosphere... certainly looking forward to a return visit.
