“Good but not Great”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2014

We opted for a package including one nights accommodation and the taster Menu in the James Martin restaurant. In short the evening taster menu was absolutely superb, both in terms of the quality of foods and wine and service. We could not fault it in any way, highly recommended. The room though was average with little of the touches one would expect of this type of accommodation , the little things ; no turndown, scarcity of shampoos etc etc. Breakfast was a disappointment ;very average, Whith with such talented chefs in the hotel why do they forget about the quality of breakfast , at best average . For what we paid for the package we *shouldn't* criticise the food was fantastic , the hotel a little underwhelming .

Called at the Talbot last Sunday on the chance they might have a table for 2 The staff were really friendly and said yes of course but it might be in the bar We were lucky enough to get seated in the restaurant after a drink in the bar The Sunday lunch was amazing ,a beautiful starter of salmon followed by wonderful pink beef with home grown crisp veg and a proper yorkshire ! My husband couldn't eat a dessert but I had a lemon parfait which was truly delicious The whole experience from the great friendly welcome , outstanding food and lovely surroundings meant we had a memorable few hours and very reasonably priced for the quality of produce We will definitely be back hopefully for an overnight stay and might even treat my dog as it is a dog friendly hotel Can't wait to return !

A stunning location in Malton. Surrounded by rolling hills and countryside with the added benefit of it being within walking distance of the beautiful town of Malton.

Sufficient parking.

Upon arrival the Receptionist was friendly and welcoming, we advised we had booked a table and she invited us to firstly take a drink in the bar area. We selected what we wanted from the menu, presuming we would be shown to our table. Shortly after, a bread board was brought to our table. We explained we had a table booked in the Restaurant... this appeared to cause a problem. Our bread was whipped away and we were left to carry our own drinks through to our table in the Restaurant.

Upon being shown our table in an empty Restaurant we asked if it would be at all possible to sit on one of the tables for two by the window. The waitress advised she would have to check... we were advised that the other six/seven tables for two were reserved????!

Lunch was ordered and soon delivered. I opted for the Haddock and chips. Delicious crispy batter served with Jenga chips and a Rapeseed oil tartare @ £ 7.50 Dessert was a forced rhubarb mouse.. beautiful dessert that melted in your mouth. The serving staff were pleasant and well mannered but almost robotic, not creating much rapport with the customers.

Overall a pleasant experience and I will be sure to visit again.

Constructive comments & observations 02.03.14

POSITIVES

Hotel:
Reception: VG
Room 16: VG

NEGATIVES
Hotel:
Windows: Rattled in wind, plugged with Malton notepaper.
Glass coasters: none
Hotel notes: none, e.g. restaurant serving times, telephone instructions, doctor etc.
No turndown service or fresh towels after pre-dinner evening showers.

Restaurant:
No sight of manager in hotel or restaurant.
Un-attentive staff meant having to chase up extra bottle of wine ordered, outside the restaurant, but not supplied/served until meal almost finished.
Attempted removal of plates before guests had finished.
Had to top-up own wines, not a problem but expected.
No description or knowledge of wines on offer from the staff.
Returned bottle of white due to medium temperature, fresh glasses not offered or replaced or even a ‘sorry or apology.
Never asked whether we enjoyed the meals/food.
Asked for the music to be turned up in the bar so we could identify what was being played but told no, reverted to Shazam.

Overall poorly trained restaurant/dining staff compared to the breakfast room staff that was very much better.

The hotel experience was good and delivered, the restaurant failed.

This was special birthday occasion that was sheared by six persons, without exception all thought the total experience was average compared to fine dining in Northcotes the previous week.

Will be interesting to see whether any visit follow-up is made.

Room Tip: Rooms are good, ask for an upgrade or superior room

We stayed here last week to celebrate our wedding anniversary and had booked a James Martin Gourmet stay. We stayed in Room 3 which is one of their feature rooms. This overlooked the gardens and was very peaceful. As well as the massive (really comfortable bed) there was also a small settee and coffee table. The bathroom was superb and included a free standing claw foot bath and a separate rain shower.

The only things that let the room down were that no robes were provided, which is really strange in this class of hotel and the subdued lighting made it difficult to see properly to put my make up on. Also I really missed the hospitality tray. We did order a tray of tea (complimentary) in the afternoon which came quite quickly - no biscuits though - but I didn't want to do that for my first cup of tea in the morning.

The tasting menu was delicious but the glass of wine to accompany the course was brought to the table quite a few minutes before the actual food and was quite a mean serving size. The white wine was also not really cold enough. There was also no description of what we were eating or why the wine was chosen for that particular course. Also I am not sure why there were two desserts. I would have preferred one to have been cheese maybe? I'm not sure I would chose a tasting menu again.

The staff were polite and friendly although when we first arrived in the empty bar we were not acknowledged by the barman who had his back to us all the time and it was only when another member of staff came to the bar were we asked if we would like a drink.

Overall we had an enjoyable stay at The Malton Hotel but just a few little irritants stopped it from being truly memorable.

Room Tip: Room 3 which is a feature room is large and at the back of the hotel overlooking the gardens. This m...

My partner booked us into the Talbot as a birthday present which included an evening in the restaurant experiencing the tasting menu, I added the flight of wines to my experience and I am so pleased I did! The food was exceptional, the wine just divine and the service was fabulous, not pretentious, very down to earth, providing a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which only added to the overall experience.
After a wonderful lesiurly breakfast the following morning, we relaxed in the hotel reading the morning papers and the books containing the history of the hotel which is well worth the read.
It was all very reasonably priced, we were made to feel very welcome and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone!
Would we go there again? We most certainly will!

Room Tip: The Hotel does not have a lift, we were on the second floor it was not problem for us and we loved o...
