“Almost Excellent!”
Reviewed June 29, 2012

We recently stayed her for our wedding anniversary on a Travel Zoo deal.On arrival we were upgraded to a large room on the roadside of the hotel which was noisy so we asked for a quiter room which was lovely and our request was handled very professionally. The 3 course dinner was excellent as one would expect, but was let down by some inexperienced staff who need more guidance. Breakfast was a little dissapointing and the service was very poor. A little niggle but the aprons worn by the girls at breakfast were extremely creased!! Overall we thorougly enjoyed our stayand look forward to returning but feel the service needs to be raised to match the outstanding quality of the food.

Room Tip: rooms overlooking the gardens are quieter

Dear Gizmo1488

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments on Tripadvisor. I am very pleased that overall you really enjoyed your stay.

We have taken the decision to look at sourcing some new aprons as the ones we have been using are linen and crease very easily. I am sure that we will have them sorted soon and all the team will look that little bit smarter.

I very much hope to welcome you back to the hotel soon.

Kind regards

Robert

Its been difficult settling on an overall mark for the Talbot. The food would probably have warranted a 5 but the (minor) issues with staff performance have pulled it down to an overall 4. Firstly, the food....the menu is (probably deliberately) limited to a choice from 6 starters, 6 mains and 6 (i think )sweets. All appeared to be excellent and our choices certainly were. Had the impression that the menu reflected James Martins input as a meal designer rather than as the execurtive chef on regular duty. That aside, whoever cooked it did a great job. The price was more than reasonable.

In terms of the staff, it was apparent that many were new to the Talbot (which has been recently refurbished). On booking out i was told of the free tea and coffee policy (having had a large pot of tea and coffee first thing in the morning which were excellent). This applies as there are no facilities in the rooms.
Service in the dining room was enthusiastic, if a little disjointed. It appeared to us that we were "forgotten" when the sweet was due and again in the morning when we waited ages for someone to take our cooked breakfast order (others that came in later were served and away before i finally raised the issue with the maite d). I have to agree with a previous reviewer...the dining room could do with a little background music as people were speaking in subdued tones, making the atmosphere a little dour. This aside, however, all of the staff were pleasant and enthusiastic and i am sure that they will develop into the role. The decor of the hotel is in keeping with the hotels origins, apart from the bathrooms which are modern and roomy, The linen is crisp and new and the beds totally comfortable. If i had 1 issue (which cant really be dealt with) it wouldbe with the sound proofing ...which doesnt seem to exist making our room (26) pretty susceptible to noise from the adjacent rooms and from the road next to the hotel.
All in all, though, a place that i would reccommend,

Dear Quizzz

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts regarding your recent stay.

I am sorry that there were a few niggles that stopped us getting the 5 stars but we are working hard on these to ensure that we can continue to develop.

We are also going to be installing some secondary glazing to the rooms that face in the direction of yours to ensure a good nights sleep.

We look very much to welcoming you back to the Talbot soon.

Kind regards

Robert

We had a very enjoyable stay at The Talbot, there was just a couple of things I found difficult. The restaurant had no atmosphere and everyone was whispering - not a relaxed environment at all! When I suggested there could be some soft/gentle background music I was told the owner didn't like music being played. This would have probably drowned out the staff shouting orders in the kitchen we could hear! The food was excellent and very good value for money, a 3 course meal is £29 with coffee & beautiful fudge. When asking for a liquor coffee to finish my meal, I had to explain the flavours of each liquor (that the bar didn't have) to the young waitress, I felt sorry for her as she appeared to feel uncomfortable - maybe some additional traing would help.
All in all the decor is tasteful and traditional and the beds are extreemly comfortable, so I hope my comments are taken as constructive criticism.

We recieved an offer through Travelzoo to try out the recently refirbished Talbot, and with James Martin's name all over the website it was hard not to. On arrival the first impressions were very pleasing, the staff very helpful showing us to our room and explaining the free tea and coffee arangements! In the bar however, things were not so well organised as when we asked if we could order a sandwich(2.30pm) we were informed by the barman "yes", who then dissapeared, then asked a waitress who said she wasn't sure, then asked the assistant manager who flatly stated "no!". The barman came back eventually and between the three staff members it was decided that we could! The evening 3 course meal was very good but the actual portions left us both still feeling hungry. On the whole a very nice Hotel but they really need some work doing on the food and basic inter-staff communication .

Dear NortheastMrsb

Many thanks for posting your comments on Tripadvisor. I am very pleased you enjoyed your stay and have spoken to the team about the sandwich request that had been made at the bar, and the confussion was due to the waitress not realising that you were a hotel resident. So many appologies for the poor communication relating to this order.

I do hope to see you again soon.

Kind regards

We visited the hotel with friends this weekend on a Travelzoo offer and had a wonderful time. The hotel itself has been refurbish to a very high standard and the rooms were immaculate, bedding and towels lovely. We dined in the restaurant and have to say big congratulations to Craig, the chef for one of the best meals we have eaten for a long time. The staff were all lovely and friendly especially the waitresses in the restaurant. Only criticism I have is that I didn't get to meet James Martin but that's just cos I am a big fan:) well done everyone, will definately be visiting again.

Returned a few days ago from a two night break at the Talbot Hotel, this was a special offer from Travelzoo for half price and what a Hotel, staff very friendly and helpful, food was excellent, just had a £4 million pound refurbishment so do go for the feature rooms that overlook the gardens (although they had not been completed due to excessive wet weather which had delayed project) they are slightly larger rooms but are well worth the extra £30.
Would love to return soon lovely area and wonderful countryside.

Room Tip: Go for the feature rooms worth the litle extra
