“very disapointing”
Reviewed March 31, 2014

I booked well in advance to make sure that we would be well catered for as we are both vegetarians, and one of us is Gluten free,I was told by the receptionist that this would be no problem.
We arrived sunday 30th March 2014 we were impressed with the location and room,
But we were very disapointed at the location of were the meals were being served, in a dark and gloomy basement, the staff were pleasant on the first night, and then to our disapointment there was only one vegetarian dish, which was also gluten free,So that was ordered for my partner,I did not want the Mushroom Risotto so I asked for a Salad for my main meal,
The mushrooms in the Risotto were cut tiny and you could count in one hand "Tasteless", my salad did not fare much better, all I had on my plate was lettice leaves tomatoes small amount of cubed cheese I then complained to the waiter who was serving us and he passed our complaint onto the chef and manager, we were given a complementary glass of wine, the chef came to our table and asked us what we would like the next evening and he would order the ingredients to make the main dish, but this was not to be, as we found out, first we had to wait as there was no tables at the time I booked for, we had to wait in our room till we got a phone call, and when we told the waiter that our meal had been ordered the night before as the chef had prepared for us, the waiter came back and told us the Gluten free meal had been prepared but not the vegetarian dish, so I picked off the one option off the menu, that was no better very little ingredients, my parteners consistered of a "stack" which was parsnip, harve a carrot, couple of slices of roasted red pepper, and a bit of Kale nicely presented, but only a childs portion,we complained to waiter but not interested
The meals we were served lacked taste and quality and quantity and the place they were served in did not deserve to be called anything but a cafe, extremely disappointed
We will not be going back, the owners want to take note and make some much needed changes,it would be a real shame to lose custom, good location, grounds are lovely, building was too' but its not enough

Room Tip: 107 was very good window could be opened if too hot, nice view, although ventilator in bathroom was n...

Because I was let down by another hotel I booked in at short notice - so glad I did! Excellent food, brilliant staff (always attentive and friendly without being creepy) made this a very pleasurable visit.
Only 2 let downs.
1. Breakfast - order not taken correctly (no egg) and the small roundels of black pudding and haggis were roasted dry.
2. Ground floor room doesn't let you have a lie in as the gravel is deafening with the HGV delivery vehicles attending early morning.
If you want a lie in don't stay on a School night!!

Room Tip: Just avoid ground floor

This hotel and wedding venue will go from strength to strength under new management as the accommodation is great with good sized comfortable bedrooms, plus very attentive staff at all levels.
We spent 2 nights here using a groupon voucher which was excellent value including 2 breakfasts and a 3 course evening meal. Ate both nights and food was excellent quality, though you won't feel full with just a main course.
This is a quiet location and hopefully the grounds will be developed to make interesting walks. I would say that due to its location it is not the best choice for spending a lot of time in Edinburgh, but rather as a base for the surrounding area. A car is needed if you stay here, although if you walk to the top of the 3/4 mile drive, there is an excellent cheap bus service into the city. The walk is pleasant but not flat.

We were looking forward to our afternoon tea/overnight stay at Melville Castle - it was an incredibly thoughtful Christmas present to us from family members. They know we love wee hotel breaks around Scotland.
It was a very disappointing stay, sadly.

The setting is gorgeous and the building beautiful and impressive. The staff were friendly, but very disorganised and harassed. When we tried to book our stay communication from the hotel was non-existent and no promised follow up calls or even emails.

The hotel has a feel of old people's home about it. Fake and dusty flowers everywhere. Fixtures and fittings poor quality. Hotel smell took me back to school dinners and that 'over cooked cabbage' smell. Room was clean, but heating barely functioning. Despite requesting a double room we got twin beds, and they were extra narrow and we were at risk of falling out of bed each time we turned over!

Afternoon tea was ok, nothing special but served with a smile by a lovely lass.

Dinner in the brasserie was very disappointing. Maître d was panicky and flustered. Wine list was dreadful and very overpriced for very poor quality wine. Food was tasteless and I imagine most of it started life in the freezer, very little made in-house. My steak literally had no flavour - really odd.

We didn't bother with breakfast.

Such a disappointing stay as you can see the potential of such a place. I'm guessing that they have not had a rolling refurbishment programme for many years and and a result the place now needs huge sums spent on it to bring it up to a good standard. Someone with very deep pockets and a love of good hospitality could make it a very special place.

Enjoyed a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast stay with family from Yorkshire. On arrival the Castle looked very impressive and the interior and fabric of the hotel was in keeping and very impressive. The welcome on arrival was friendly and attentive. Afternoon tea was to a very high standard and was equalled by the evening meal, which was quality and beautifully presented by very pleasant staff, as was the breakfast. Our accommodation was equally pleasing - comfortable, spacious and with a beautiful outlook over well tended garden and the river. We would have no hesitation in returning or recommending.

Room Tip: Room with view over to the river.

The facilities were lovely and we had a delicious meal at the Brasserie. Overall the castle and surroundings are very impressive and pleasant to stay in. However, we paid for an upgrade but did not receive the room features we had requested (four-poster bed, bath en-suite). Not the level of service we expected from a 4 star establishment. Also disappointed by the lack of communication from management/reception.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are not worth the upgrade (unless you're 18 feet tall)
