“We really enjoyed it, thanks for your hospitality! We come back!”
Reviewed July 10, 2011

We are two Swedish grandparents with our two grandchildren visiting Edinburgh in JUne 2011. We had been lokking for a B&B or hotels not in central Edinburgh as we wanted some space to move around for our children. We found Rathan House and Eskbank guesthouse and we couldn't be more satisfied.

We got tips about what to do, interesting places to visit, charming restaurants with super menues...our whole journey was planned before we arrived! Thank you for being so helpful!!
The rooms were big and clean, we got everything we needed, the girls liked the Scottish cookies!.
Also - , thanks for the Scottish breakfast!
At the moment I could say nothing that could have been better - maybe the time for taking bus to the centre of Edinburg (approximatly 20 minutes) but it was worth staying a bit outside the city centre

We booked the family room specifically for its ground floor access to the garden for convenience of our dogsand stressed the importance of this when we booked.

On arrival we were told that we could not use the garden as there had been kennel cough there. We were not told this when we booked nor when we rang to confirm the day before arrival. We would not have gone if we had known this in advance.

On the positive side the room was spacious.

The welcome was dour.

The breakfast of one soggy slice of microwaved eggy bread with one rasher of bacon was terrible.

There are no sausages on these premises.

A full breakfast is not available.

One of the books on full display in the dining room with various local books featured a photo of a hearse on the front cover and was about the adventures of an undertaker.

Try it here by all means for the experience but carry your own supply of food.

We aim to please. Our Highland breakfasts are quality rated by the Scottish Tourist Board at 5 stars. This independent assessment rating means High level excellence and big choice. There is a fruit course ( typically Fresh Fruit Salad, Apple & Raspberry Cranachan or Melon….followed by Porridge with Honey , Banana & Cream or packeted cereals…… …and then 10 cooked choices - 2 of which suit vegetarians and those needing a Gluten free option…… 5 of which are famous Scottish fish dishes . Our signature cooked dish is “Spealtragan” -Very Highland and Islands !.......which few will have tasted before. Oatcakes - Cheeses – toast and home made jams and Rowies ( Aberdeen Butteries ) /fresh coffee or choice of 6 teas…… do, to most, make up a full breakfast offering.
So , while clearly different from an Ulster Fry , we hope comment stating this is not a full breakfast is below the belt and simply untrue. Most tell us our breakies offerings are very special , memorable and taste really great. Most also really appreciate our “house party breakfast” guestrequest that Cellphone conversations should be made outwith our dining room.
Our non resident housekeeper had had puppies and asked if she could build/use a temporary puppy pen in our huge garden. Spring child guests found them enchanting & absolutely loved this "exrra". We gave prudent advice re. our recent KC problem to this guest & passed on Vet advice verbatim. We also advised about natural puppy mother reaction to “intruders”. Unusually for us we tried to keep a distance from her dogs ( just in case) and advised her to keep clear of the little beauties ( just in case) . Ignoring best advice – the guest entered the area and touched the puppies & mother. They then went to a UK Kennel Club show with their show dogs. If we had been wrong about curing the temp. problem - KC could have then been spread after the show to the 4 corners of the UK. I am afraid we obviously failed to hide the fact that we were horrified. For that we are sorry and will work on our diplomacy skills.
