“Lovely Cairngorm getaway”
Reviewed February 14, 2014

This is a lovely hotel with warm welcoming staff and a smart, yet relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. The staff worked really hard to make sure everything was right, we really felt nothing was too much trouble. The room was a little dated, but it was clean comfortable and spacious. We would recommend a visit here to anyone, 5 miles north of Aviemore it is less commercial, perfect for train enthusiasts as it is right next door to the Speyside Heritage Railway and the food in the hotel is just fantastic. My husband also wants me to let everyone know it has a good local real ale on hand pull.

Thank you very much for your review on Trip Advisor.

I am delighted to read that you had a great time with us and that you found most aspects of your stay to be 5 star. We are just about to start our room refurbishment programme, which will see all of our rooms refurbished over the next few months (a very exciting time for us!)

Hope to see you both again!

Kind regards,

Had a great time at the Boat Hotel. We stayed in room 307 which I believe was a Junior Suite and it was a lovely large room with a great view of the steam railway from the window. The bed was huge, it wasn't until the second day we noticed it was actually 2 single mattresses zipped together so this wasn't really noticeable - when sleeping in it it just felt like one big bed! The bathroom was also huge with a bath and shower. Like the previous reviewer, we had an issue with no hot water one morning but when we spoke to reception they advised they'd had a problem with the heating system that morning and it had now been rectified. Sure enough we went back to our room and after letting the water run for a while it soon became warm.

Breakfast is brilliant. First you get the cold/continental buffet with a wide range of croissants, fruit, cereal and yogurt. Then you choose which hot meal you'd like - the Scottish breakfast and pancakes were both good. You could also choose from porridge, kippers or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs so there was something to suit everyone.

It's only 6 miles into Aviemore but it costs £15 in a taxi so just bear that in mind if you fancy a drink in the town! The last bus back to Boat of Garten is at 7:40pm on weekdays.

All staff are very friendly and make an effort to chat about your plans which is nice.

The only reason I haven't given The Boat Hotel 5 stars is that it just needed a little bit of maintenance - bath needed re-sealed, shower head needed a wee clean and there were a few scuffs and chips on the bedroom walls. I know these are minor things (and to be expected when we're all coming in with snowboards and dirty walking boots) but if they had been maintained just that little bti more I'd have given it 5 stars :)

Room Tip: Book a Junior Suite.

Thank you for your positive review of our hotel. We appreciate you taking the time to go through the aspects of your stay, and appreciate your genuine comments.

We are about to undergo a room refurbishment programme, which will see all our rooms being upgraded/maintained over the next few months. You will also be glad to hear that we are having biomass heating installed to eliminate any more heating/hot water issues.

Glad to read you had a great time and do hope to welcome you back again soon.

First of all, let me say that this is a perfectly decent, acceptable hotel, and one which fortunately does not take too much for granted despite there being, almost literally, no competition in the immediate area.

That said, there is a certain benign ambivalence about their service, and while some might find this 'quaint', certain simple things do detract from what could be a more enhanced experience.

Firstly, on arrival, our room was not ready until quarter to four; not in itself outrageous you might think; however we had arrived early at 1pm, so they had plenty of time to make the quite simple preparation for the next guest. To be fair, when we mentioned this purely in the passing, the waiter provided a couple of large glasses of Syrah on the house, which more than made up for the delay. However, when we later went out to check on the progress of our room, we returned to find that the couch we had been sitting on had disappeared, with the waiter saying that he was "re-arranging things for dinner later"!!! In fact, he was a bit 'peeved' that we wanted to sit in the two remaining 'comfortable' armchairs that were left … and this was in the bar area! Bizarre ...

Once in the room however (at 4pm), it was very pleasant indeed; we had booked a deluxe garden room, purely for the private terrace/deck that came with this. However, there was no outside furniture to take advantage of this space, which therefore rendered it a bit redundant unless you simply wanted to go out and stand for a bit! To be honest, the weather was not entirely conducive to sitting outside, although I did notice that there was external seating on the deck of the room next door. The other thing that annoyed me a little about the room was the bed; I explicitly enquired that the bed was a double/king, but it turned out to be two single mattresses zipped together, which I really do not like, particularly when the zip is so oversize as to cause a crevice very noticeable unless you have a particularly platonic relationship with your partner!

Dinner was booked for 7.30pm, but when we attended at the restaurant, we didn't get seated until nearer 8pm. Service was extremely slow, and we had to ask for a menu (and later, a wine menu) which were not automatically provided. By the time we ordered, two or three of the fairly limited menu main course items were unavailable. When they were eventually received, though, they were tasty enough. However, on requesting dessert, a rather sullen waiter advised that one of the choices was unavailable; on settling for the cheese board instead, he stated "Oh, I thought you were going to ask for another Bread and Butter pudding. We don't have any cheese left either." Two bread and butter puddings it was then, although hilariously, when they did arrive, we were advised that it was the last two of them as well! I wonder what the remainder of the diners were getting for pudding …

We decided to order breakfast in our room the following morning; this arrived almost on time, but the pancakes and maple syrup lacked the promised cream, and there was no orange juice as ordered. It really wasn't a massive deal, and we couldn't be bothered with the wait involved in phoning up and requesting them … but it was another minor hiccup.

Now, as I said at the start, none of this was a huge problem; we are pretty easily pleased, and really just enjoy getting away for a relaxing time with half decent food, accommodation and plenty of wine! In that regard, the hotel, location and general standards are more than acceptable; it was just that, in cumulo, it all added up to just take the edge of what should have been an even more enjoyable experience.

Have stayed here before and enjoyed it (despite faults with the room) however after having booked recently, I phoned 5 days after booking to say that my wife was now seriously ill and could we move the booking back to a later weekend. Because we were now within 6 days of the booking they refused to do so and charged us for the full amount (over £260).
I feel that a little bit of flexibility could have gone a long way, especially for previous customers and that this reflects very poorly on the attitude of the hotel management.

Thank you for your recent review on Trip Advisor.

Despite not staying with us on this occasion, we appreciate your comments in regards to what would have been your stay with us. We have a few different rates available at the time of booking, ranging from fully pre-payable to rates that have a shorter cancellation period. Rates are confirmed at the time of booking along with the cancellation policy which is again reiterated on booking confirmation.
As a gesture of goodwill we did try various options to allow you to retain the monies, but it was unfortunate that we were unable to do so on this occasion.

Kind regards,

Stayed here as got a good deal via the 'Wowcher' website. Despite it being February the hotel seemed reasonably busy. Room was generally good though carpets were somewhat threadbare and curtains were torn. Bathroom was excellent, newly refurbished with both a bath and shower. We stayed two days and there was no hot water on one of them - not good.
The staff repeatedly said that Wi-Fi was available in all rooms but despite trying on several devices we failed to get a good signal even in reception. Very frustrating.
So whilst we enjoyed our stay it was not without problems. Sort them out and it would be 5 star.

Decided to give the Boat bistro a try for Sunday Lunch. They offer two courses for £12.95.

Got nice table next to fire. Prompt service with drinks. Told no Salmon as smoked salmon starter and no Salmon main course.

So for starters that left pate or soup. Mains Pork or Vegetarian risotto.

Not great choice 2 of each. In this day and age it should be far better choice than that.

Starter of pate was very good. Main course one piece pork sitting on bed of mashed potato and vegetables. Like vegetable al dente but not al dentures. Undercooked green beans and carrots.

Good service, poor choices and main course pretty disappointing.

Went up to the Boat hotel on Saturday 25th o January for a burns night with my wife and maw n paw. all I can say is what a great time we had! well worth the journey, the staff couldn't do enough for you very hard working but with a smile. entertainments manager Isobel( who was once a disco dancing champion) can fairly cut the rug (dance really well) ask her to give you a demonstration if you bump into her, brilliant!!. once again thank you, we will be back. PS the food is to die for.
