“The boat is starting to sink”

We stayed at many hotels across Scotland on a 12 day golf trip. This hotel was a disappointment As we approached this charming hotel, I thought "this looks nice with the lovely window boxes and friendly outdoor patio". Inside is dark (some would say has warmth). It's a bit of a rabbit warren getting to our room (old and quaint). They tried in the room with new wall paper and matching broadloom, but just plain functional. The shower tiles had mould/mildew. For one night, it got the job done as we were golfing the Boat the next morning (just down the road). This place has potential and could use a full makeover. The staff were cheerful, friendly and very nice. The wifi signal was not strong enough in the rooms, but could get it at reception. The breakfast was average.

This is a lovely hotel with great food and lovely staff who are very helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend to pay this hotel a visit, even if you're just passing by for a lunch. The food is magnificent, we'll definitely be returning to this place.

Booked a single room and got a dinner, bed and breakfast package. The room was compact but fine as it was only for the night. Shower room could do with a make over, cracked sink and floor tile. Soundproofing between rooms is not good but luckily the next door's snoring didn't go on all night. Dinner was pretty good. Place was packed but keen staff kept up with the workload and delivered the meal with a smile and friendly chat. Kippers for breakfast. Easy parking. Great receptionist.

Room Tip: Looks like the modern rooms at back would be away from noise of delivery vehicles in the morning

We had a wonderful meal in the restaurant last night - we asked to be in the restaurant rather than the bar as, although the menu is the same, we wanted to be in a quieter room.

The duty manager who greeted us was a little officious, but the young woman who looked after us thereafter was friendly, welcoming and very efficient. Although not a particularly cold evening, the fire in the dining room had been lit, which added to the warmth and welcoming feeling of the room.

We had two courses - the hake, which was perfectly cooked, beautifully presented and had very well matched textures and flavours. For dessert I chose the cranachan, which was presented in attractive nouvelle cuisine style, which initially I wasn't sure about, but the textures and flavours were again flawless. The wine list was extensive and we chose a good Argentinian white, which arrived at just the right temperature.

So why only four stars? So much was really good, but the portions were on the small side and after a day on the hill, we needed more and with hindsight should have had a starter, or at least the bread and olives on their 'While you wait' menu. And the drinks were eye-wateringly expensive - our wine was good, but overpriced, and if we had bought it by the glass, or had a soft drink, we would have felt seriously overcharged. Having said this, we had a lovely evening as the food was so good and the ambiance of the dining room so relaxing.

To summarise - they have a gifted chef, but to achieve five stars from discerning diners, they should have larger portions and reconsider the pricing of their drinks.

Visit this area quite a lot and have had a drink in the hotel before. However on this occasion we ordered 1 glass of coke and a bottle of Kopperberg Cider and was charged £8.00 - the Cider being £5.50. This in our opinion was a total rip off. While we were there a lady also ordered 2 coffees and when she was told the price cancelled her order.

Just returned from a 2 night break in a king size deluxe room with a patio.
Room excellent size and a bonus for us was the patio leading onto the garden, ideal as we had 2 small dogs.
Staff very friendly and welcoming.
Both meals were very nice and no complaints.
The only down side was only 1 chair in the room, something which is a pet hate of mine! Double room, 2 persons, 1 chair! We ended up bringing in a chair from the patio.
Very enjoyable break and I am sure we will return sometime.

During July we stayed in many small hotels throughout Scotland. Most we're at best very average until we arrived at The Boat Hotel.
It's an amazing small hotel tucked away in the small village of garten.
The staff were so friendly and a special mention has to go out to the management team and Charlette, the assistant manager.
The restaurant in the hotel is exquisite with foot being served by Chef Andrew...he would give any top chef in London a good run for their money. The waiting staff were also top nosh and Tracey made our evening enjoyable....
We stayed in a room looking over the mountains which was large and well thought out

We look forward to returning to this little paradise!!!
