What impressed me the most (and already the place was lovely) was the healthy food options. The simple breakfast was cereals and bread, porridge optional, tea, coffee etc. But in contrast to other places where we stayed, the food was on the healthier side of things. Especially the 5 pound lunch pack option was great. They lay out some topics and homemade bread and you make your own sandwhich. You also get a cake and chocolate bar with it so the deal is excellent.
Rooms were nice and clean - no boots inside the house - and the owners were accessible but honest (no overwhelming fake niceness). Very much recommended.

Good base for mountain bike trails - both man made and natural (Lagan, Glenlivet, Glenfeshie, Rothiemurchus all within easy reach). Comfortable, relaxed accommodation with a laid back & welcoming vibe. Rebecca's evening meal was lovely - praised by some of the most notoriously reticent of our group! Great fresh healthy home cooking including home grown veg, tasty salad and zingy fruit from the garden. Everybody in our group thought Fraoch Lodge offered great value for money. Hotel down the road is pricey but the bar is handy for a comfy evening pint.

We try to maintain a homely and welcoming feel to Fraoch Lodge. We feel that putting locks on all the rooms would detract from this, especially when we are resident in the lodge when guests are out. If we leave the premises, we do lock the house up until our return, though guests in residence can still access the building with a code to the combination lock on the front door.

If there are any valuables which are of concern, some guests choose to leave them with us in the office for safekeeping.

Great stay in late June. Excellent base for the Cairngorms - no need to visit Aviemore! Owner has great knowledge of local area and they're very friendly. Sitting room with open fire was great, excellent selection of books and magazines. Breakfast was good, kitchen facilities was also good. Only qualm was that we had no lock on our door - despite not really needing one it would have been nice to have the option of locking our door whilst out.

We try to maintain a friendly and welcoming atmosphere of a home away from home here at Fraoch Lodge. The house is also our home and we feel that locks on all the doors would detract from this, especially when we are in the house while guests are out enjoying the local area. However, if we do have to leave the building, we lock the house, though guests in residence still have access if they have the code to the front door.

If there are any valuables about which guests are particularly concerned, some people choose to leave them with us in the office for safekeeping.

A HIGH TIME IN HARRIS!

A new venture for Scot Mountain Holidays this year was an expedition to the Outer Hebrides, to Harris and Lewis. As usual, this was very well planned and the logistics carefully thought out; from their base at Boat of Garten, they picked up clients at Aviemore and Inverness stations, before driving to Ullapool to board the ferry to Stornaway, for which we arrived in plenty of time. From Stornaway we then took an interesting drive down to Tarbert, our base for the week in some well-equipped holiday cottages.

Andy had prepared a very varied itinerary, a pleasant blend of hill and coastal walking, with visits to many places of interest. As always, he was a mine of information on the geology, the geography, the flora and fauna and especially the bird life. Among other species, we saw lapwings, golden plover, cormorants, gannets fishing, a Great Northern Diver and, of course, at least half a dozen eagles ….

On the midweek ‘rest’ day, we had the opportunity for a scenic drive around south Harris, visiting a prehistoric standing stone and also a visitor centre. We also discovered that the island has become something of a haven for artists and photographers and there are quite a few studios dotted around, often with hospitable cafes! For the botanist, the coastal scenery is much enhanced by the ‘machair’ wild flower meadows.

There is much of interest too for the historian: the famous prehistoric standing stones at Callanish, an Iron Age ‘broch’ (chieftain’s house) in a well preserved state, and more recently the ruins, mainly just a chimney, of a former whaling station; there is even a present-day indication of long-established customs in that many people still cut and dry peat for fuel!

I have so far not mentioned the hillwalking, which can be very challenging even though the hills are not of the highest, due to the dearth of paths and tracks, giving one a real feeling of pioneering. Even dedicated ‘Munro-baggers’ would find much to enjoy here, since the terrain is very rugged, the ascents are often steep and one usually starts from sea level. Coupled with the remoteness of the island, this means that we encountered few other walkers during the week.

Complementing Andy’s expert and informative guiding was the magnificent cuisine produced by Rebecca. After a substantial breakfast, we had a wide choice of fillings for our sandwiches, which we assembled with the fresh home-baked bread. On our return to base, we enjoyed the famous ‘Cake-o-Clock’: refreshing tea and home-made cake, before the excellent evening meals.

Overall, this was a very interesting and enjoyable trip, underlining the Scot Mountain Holidays slogan: “A Sense of Place and Belonging”. It is an expedition well worth their repeating.

Thanks for sharing. Harris was an amazing trip partly due to the amazing weather we had but also the fantastic hiking opportunities.

I enjoyed this holiday immensely, the location was peaceful, the holiday was challenging and the experience was memorable, I would recommend this holiday to anyone looking for something abit different to the usual skiing trip.

Off the mountain there are nature trails/cycle routes that go on forever with the town and train station being only about 20 minutes drive away and you really get the beauty of nature all around you with stunning views of the mountains in the distance.

The meals were delicious on and off the mountain, eating in a snow-hole is an experience I won't soon forget whilst the mountain training day was a fun day out.

I can't underestimate how much I enjoyed this holiday the only thing I can think of which I didn't enjoy was the nights sleep in the snow-hole, maybe I'm just not used to roughing it quite that much but other than that I loved this holiday.

I would advice people thinking of going on this holiday to check their clothes of choice don't contain a lot of cotton, double and triple check their gear needed and not to underestimate the level of fitness involved.

One final thing worth mentioning, if you do decide to go on this holiday it WILL run even if you are the only person going something I think should be praised since I believe there's nothing worse than planning and booking a holiday and it cancelling on you.

I hope you enjoy your holiday, I know I did.

Thank you for taking the time to review your holiday with Scot Mountain Holidays, based at Fraoch Lodge. We are delighted that you enjoyed the expedition so much, even though it was out of your comfort zone. We're sure you appreciated your home comforts even more afterwards! We do hope we'll see you again. There are plenty more opportunities for adventures here in the Cairngorms National Park.

We arrived here, during Scottish winter holiday by night without booking, and desperate of finding availability. We have had a perfect welcoming from Andrew and Rebecca who she's, by the way, an excellent cooker. Their home let you feel like home. They arranged everything to organise enough room for my friend and my 6 years old son. I would definitely come back in July as I promised. The sitting room with its beautiful ceramic fire place transport you in wonderful place. Its the best place I ever been. I hardly recommend it.
Ps : sorry for my English, I'm French

Cake isn't included in the price unless you book on one of Fraoch Lodge's excellent Guided Mountaineering days, but this is also the perfect place to stay as a holiday guest house - with breakfast included, optional evening meal, use of kitchen and dining room, single bedroom and excellent facilities for drying clothes and equipment. You might get lucky with cake, as I did! Proprietors Andy and Rebecca are skilled mountain experts and friendly hosts, happy to share information about the area they love. Cooking is excellent, and Fraoch Lodge are passionate about ways to conserve the environment and promote ecotourism in the region.
A top spot for solo travellers!

It was good to see you again. Always nice to catch up with guests a second or third time. I'm glad you were able to enjoy a bit of cake even if you were on an adventure with someone else!
