“A lovely, peaceful, environmentally-friendly place to stay”
Reviewed January 26, 2011

We had a lovely relaxing holiday at Wheatland Farm and have been recommending it to friends and family since! We stayed in Otter Cottage for a week in January, and it was cosy, comfortable and warm. We were really impressed with the emphasis on being green, particularly the solar hot water, recycling facilities and bio-digesters. It was a nice touch to be given scones when we arrived, and it was useful to be able to borrow local maps and to have Ian & Maggie nearby if we had any questions! The free bikes were a great idea and were fun for exploring the narrow Devon lanes and popping into the village. It was really inspiring to see the SSSI nature reserve and to hear about all the good work Ian & Maggie are doing to help the local wildlife. If you love nature, peace and quiet and enjoy walking (Dartmoor, Exmoor and the Tarka Trail aren't far away), this is a wonderful place to stay. We hope to return!

I hadn't read the reviews before, but every one of them are true. It is truely an amazing place, with the owners beeing true hosts.
We arrived as a large group, ready to see in the new year. Many places don't like groups, but Ian welcomed each one of our party, with truely lovely mince pies.
There was lots for the kids to do, wellies on, running round the field to their hearts content, or playing on the bikes supplied by Ian and Maggie.
The birds were fantastic to watch, and we thought we may have seen the missing owl.
If you want somewhere quite, beautiful, restful, then do go....you won't be disappointed!

We booked Otter Cottage solely from the internet site for a break over Christmas with our two young boys and Claude the dog. The cottage was cozy and perfect for our needs. Very clean and well equipoped, we were a little chilly at times but this was more due to my ineptitude with the woodburner and the minus twelve temperature outside than the available heating. Ian and Maggie were great hosts, available without being obtrusive and the fresh home made mince pies on arrival were to die for. We were incredibly lucky hyaving the cottage for three days over the first white christmas for years, the whole farm had six inches of dry powder snow throughout our stay. I'm sure staying here for a quiet break would be great at any time of year (free bikes, fishing, exploring etc). We would recommend wheatland farm for a quiet getaway in a beautiful location. Hoping to return in the spring to see the nature reserve at its best.

Thanks for your kind comments and so glad you enjoyed your stay. The snow was fun wasn't it! Not so sure about the night time -12 temperatures though... Sorry if you were at all chilly inside the cottage - if it's any consolation your energy use for the electric heating was impressively low for this time of year. Very sustainable!

We found Wheatland farm, easily first time. We were met by Ian, with a delicious tea of home made scones and jam.
Although mother nature was not on our side, we found the accommodation to be excellent, with the need for heating almost at zero.
We were accompanied by our adult son and to Border Collies, who all enjoyed the walks.
As we live in the heart of East Kent, we found a haven at the end of a long long drive.
Sorry we are not as green as some but my wife is an invalid so we need to use the care, that said we do try to do our best, and Wheatland farm is just great for us.
Thanks Mel & Vince Millard.

We had a fantastically relaxing time at Honeysuckle Lodge. Admittedly we chose one of the best weeks of our already great summer to visit, so we saw the wildflower meadow, pond etc at their most pretty, but I think it would be great any time.

I'd recommend trips to the RHS gardens nearby and the waterfall at Lydford Gorge was impressive and a nice day trip. I'd also recommend buying eggs from Maggie and Ian's son George (aged 7). 10p each and he will deliver them to your cottage too.

We will definitely be back.

we stayed in otter cottage with two small boys and twin baby girls...we had been thinking about Centre Park and so glad we opted for Wheatland farm instead. Boys cycled, caught 15 or so fish (and put them back!), went riding, crashed a go-cart several time, played in the tree-house, found dozesns of toads...and basically had a great time. Would definitely go back...Hats offf to Maggie and Ian
