“Charming hotel in excellent location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

We spent one night here in June, and thought the hotel was very good. The rooms are not massive and you have to sit a bit sideways on the loo (my husband is 6 foot 2 inches) but the room and bathroom were very clean. We did not experience any sound proofing issues (see earlier post) and I know the hotel was full as we had a late cancellation.

The building is of a period, with a lovely old conservatory extension, with black and white film photos and travel memorabilia.

The location is excellent – 2 minutes walk from the lovely sandy beach on the bay, 5 minutes to the restaurants on the jetty, and 10 minutes from the Atlantic coast. Parking is on the street outside but we had no problem finding a spot.

The owners were friendly and made us feel vey welcome. We enjoyed breakfast – a choice of cereals, basket of breads, fresh fruit, yoghurts, cakes etc.

We didn’t eat at the hotel but went back to the excellent Pinasse Café. However, we had a drink in the lovely courtyard.

Would definitely return, good value at 90€ per night in such a prime location.

we stumbled upon the hotel late in the afternoon and were instantly succumbed by the charm and genuine atmosphere, which is dwindling in this part of france. The location lets you amble about in the evenings for dinner at the restaurants on the quai. The great glassed didning hall is reminiscent of what made the town what is is today - a quintesential hideout. It's like being in santa cruz california.

I stayed in the Hotel des Pins for 2 nights, and would really love to give it a flawless review, but honesty prevents me! The building with its turn of the century décor is a real gem, totally unique, and is a lovely place to have dinner or a relaxing drink in front of a roaring log fire. My boyfriend and I had booked a room for 65 euro per night, and were initially shown to room 104, which was very small, but quaintly wooden and creaky in the style of an old train station waiting room. After a few minutes (this was about 7 o'clock in the evening), we realised we were going to have a problem.... There was a couple in the next room, and although they were speaking at normal volume, we could hear every word they said. When they laughed or moved a chair, we jumped! As we are both light sleepers, we knew that even earplugs wouldn't be enough to guarantee us a night's sleep.

We went to reception, where the very friendly guy (co-owner, possibly?) readliy agreed to change our room. We had said that we'd be prepared to pay more for a quieter room, but he said that all the rooms were the same (i.e. had no soundproofing). The solution he offered was for us to stay in the restored gypsy caravan that sleeps 2 in the hotel's garden, which we accepted with excitement (it was a childhood dream of mine to see inside one). It had its own bathroom opposite (shed with wc and shower - sounds wierd, but actually very clean and quite warm, though there's no heating) and a little deck area with a table and chairs for 2. It was very private and tucked away, but there was some road noise. The caravan is about a metre from the edge of the garden, and there is a busy enough crossroads just outside the hotel. Even though there was a huge thunderstorm and torrential rain for the whole of the first night, the caravan was warm and dry. It was a 'novelty' stay, fine of a couple for a night or 2 - no real storage, and terrible for anyone over 5ft5 - the stooping and head-banging gets a bit tiresome after the first day. There is a tiny wardrobe, with space for about 6 clotheshangers and 2 little bedside lockers, but everything ends up on the floor or over the 1 chair. There is a sink in the caravan, and in the 'bathroom' very good, big towels were provided - the shampoo/shower gel sachets smelled lovely and were a cut above the variety normally provided for 1-3 star hotels. The bed was a 4ft6 double, and lovely and firm.

The rate for September was 55 euro a night, and 10 euro each extra per day for a good continental breakfast with a good fruit selection and regional cakes as well as the normal bread and pastries. We had dinner at the hotel both nights, which was excellent (good mixture of meat and seafood dishes), and with really great service. I would so love to recommend this hotel, as everything about it was lovely apart from the soundproofing problem - but I think a lot of people who have stayed there would not stay again unless they are the rare sort of person who can sleep through any noise. I would say to a friend, go and have dinner there to soak up the special ambiance, but sleep somewhere else!
