“Quiet, peaceful and relaxing”
Reviewed May 5, 2017 for a stay in May 2017

Stayed on this unique site - a houseboat on a fishing lake, what an excellent idea.
All very well equipped and accepted our elderly spaniel. Very comfortable boat and were able to keep any rainbow trout we may catch. This is not open to the public so you could be the only one fishing for your supper! No TVs, wifi and not great phone signal so a great getaway from it all. Does need to have dry weather to make the most of your stay and that's what we had, thankfully. The host Dermot was very nice helpful man. Well done for having this brilliant idea for a quiet spot in North Devon.

“A joy. One of those places you don't review because you want to keep it secret.”
Reviewed October 7, 2016 for a stay in October 2016

Better than glamping, more fun than a cottage. More comfy than the usual barge because you can move the chairs. Comfy beds. Dear little log stove. The boat house with extra loo and shower with furniture would be a godsend if people need a little space. Or to spend the day if it is hot, like a beach hut. The sun sets over the rear deck and rises through the bedroom window. The ducks dabble round the boat and the trout jump in the lake. Access to the coast. Privacy and not overlooked but owners near should you need. A perfect little place for a break away from the hordes.

“A wonderful place to escape to.”

Just returned home after a week on Swallow Tail. Dermot and Caro have thought of everything to make this a gem of a holiday home. Woke up to early morning mist on the lake and sat with a glass of wine watching the sun setting in the evening. Enjoyed watching a family of Little Grebes and the flocks of Swallows, House Martins and Pied Wagtails catching insects over the water. The wood burning stove, with a generous stock of fuel kept us cosy on the couple of chilly evenings. There was plenty of equipment to make self catering easy, and to be honest we loved being on the boat so much we chose not to eat out as planned. We were very lucky with the weather, but I imagine even on a wet day it would still be beautiful. A lovely little holiday home, not for those wanting night life, TV and internet, but if like us you need to escape the rat race, love nature and something a little different you can't beat it.

Peaceful weekend away, private setting. We would return but to a different boat, due to better chances with the fishing.

“A gem of a find .... a wonderful place to relax and unwind!”

We have just returned from a week on Clouded Yellow - one of three Houseboats at Blagdon Waters, 'we' being myself and husband and two girls (14 and 11). The boat and boat house were very comfortable and warm and well equipped, although if you plan to 'eat in' it might be worthwhile taking an ovenproof dish/baking tray as these were the only things missing in an otherwise very well equipped galley. The beds were very comfortable and the boat felt spacious, especially with the added bonus of the boat house. It was lovely sitting on the front deck of the boat in the early morning or evening, with a cup of tea or glass of wine and just watch the lake. None of us are fisherman, but we enjoyed watching the fish 'jump' in the water, and the family of ducks, morhens or geese swim pass. We watched the buzzard flying overhead and saw a water vole on the shore. We spent some of our days visiting the local area, including Becky Falls, Castle Drogo, Tintagel, Boscastle and Bude. After the hustle and bustle of busy days, it was bliss to return to our little haven of peacefulness. It was lovely to spend 'family time' together, playing badminton on the shore or board games on the boat. This really is a gem of a place I would recommend to anyone!

“Best nights sleep I've had in months!”

'Painted Lady' is the name of the charming houseboat which we stayed on this weekend at Blagdon Water. Despite the weather being freezing, the little woodburning stove was efficient and kept the boat warm as toast - coal and wood provided by the owners. The bed was super comfortable and warm and since sustaining a shoulder injury skiing early this season I have not been able to sleep - I slept like a log and woke up feeling on top of the world! The view from the boat accross the water is incredibly restful and really the whole experience was utter bliss.
