Where do I start? The Alipa Bay areas of Paleokastritsa is stunning, it's really pretty with a small beach, lots of boats and yachts and enought tavernas and bars for every night of the week. I went to the Arianna with three very good friends for a relaxing, fun holiday and to be fair that's exactly what we had. We arrived on a Friday and after waiting in the lovely bar area for 10 minutes we were shown our room, number 11, and what a disappointment that was. It was very, very basic which to be fair is what you expect in the Greek Islands, but it was dirty, no pillowcases on the beds, three coathangers in the wardrobe and a bathroom that wouldn't have looked out of place in a 70's sitcom. There was a hideous shower, well I call it a shower, more like a hosepipe slung over a hook on the wall. The toilet seat was broken and the toilet leaked and what with that and the aged shower we had to put a towel on the floor each night to mop up while we all took it in turns to get ready. It was so traumatic we had to buy 2 bottles of Prosecco every night to drink on the balcony to get over the shock of the low standard of cleanliness. However apart from that we had a really good holiday. The first night we arrived was Greek Night and we had a ball, there were some lovely people there who were also staying at the Arianna and quite a few locals turned up and proceeded to show us the tradiitonal dances. We ate and danced and drank a lot and staggered off to bed in the early hours, it was great and the rest of our holiday continued in the same way. Christos and Katerina are very laid back, very trusting and they charge very little for their drinks and food. They are friendly and warm but their apartments - well, the ground floor ones - lack a basic standard of hygeine and cleanliness, some people would be horrified but we're made of sterner stuff so had a giggle and got on with it. I get the impression from other reviews that the quality of your room is defined by how many times you've stayed there and/or if you booked directly or through a travel company. We would definitely go back to Paleokastritsa again but we would definitely NOT stay at the Arianna again unless Christos and Katerina upgrade their rooms, get decent bathrooms put in, learn how to use bleach and Cif and change the towels at least once during the week - don't hold your breath!

Room Tip: If you get shown to a ground floor room ask for a first floor one, we got the impression that they were the best ones and 'saved' for those on a return trup or booking direct.

Paleokastritsa:
Loved the village. It is charming and full of character and although it is a quiet resort, there are plenty of restaurants and tavernas to choose from. The meals and drinks were extremely cheap and therefore great value for money. Arianna Apartments were 3 minutes walk from the coastal centre, set back off the main road up a steep hill.

Arianna Pool and Bar:
The pool was well maintained and the sunbeds were fine. The pool was large enough for all to swim in; and drinks, snacks and ice creams were all at hand. The staff were very obliging, relaxed and friendly. The family were always on hand to meet your needs (even if it meant popping out on a scooter to fetch fresh ingredients.)

The Room:
Always expect basic when visiting Greece and Greek Islands. We did. We entered the room and were a little crestfallen. The room was more than basic. The bed was low and fairly uncomfortable; the kitchen area was in desperate need of upgrading and facilities for self catering were minimal; the built-in ceiling-to-floor wardrobe was never going to house our clothes as it was lined with newspaper and old, forgotten musty towels with a smattering of coat hangers (one wire and two plastic for toddlers clothes); the curtain pole dropped to the floor each time we opened and closed the curtains, the mirror was smeared and the "dressing table" came with no stool (so we persevered with a bedside table); and finally the bathroom... We flicked on the switch and saw a small, rounded 15w bulb flicker on, above a "vanity mirror" flanked in white, plastic casements and taped-up exposed wires. We looked to the ceiling for the main bulb, but that was it. The toilet was ingrained with grime and the shower tray was very small. The "shower" comprised of a portable shower hose attached to the taps and therefore you would have to manually manoeuvre the shower head as there were no fixings for it to be held on the wall. The water ultimately flooded the bathroom and for one time only seeped into the kitchenette until we used the spare towels from the bottom of the wardrobe to block it in the doorway. Once, the electricity went off completely but it was promptly turned back on when we brought it to their attention. After our initial dismay we grew accustomed to the room and despite all of the above, we survived and enjoyed our stay.

The team:
Our stay was particularly memorable because of the team. They were kind, friendly, welcoming and willing. We used the pool on most days and spent money in the bar on drinks, ice creams and lunchtime snacks. The prices were very cheap and we were always shocked at the final amount when we asked for the bill. It was always much less than we expected. We ate out each night and still found the family friendly on our return.

Overall:
We were convinced that we had the most basic rooms. The rooms from 1 - 8 were all on the ground floor and most were similar. We heard that the rooms with the higher numbers were updated and issued to either returning guests or guests that had booked a room directly through the owners. Other than the room, we were happy with the facilities, the resort and the staff. The weather was glorious sunshine and we had a relaxing week before returning to work.

Would we return to Paleokastitsa? Yes
Would we return to Arianna? Not to room 2.

We were not expecting a lot from this holiday but got even less when we arrived 4 ladies mixed ages the 2 bedroom apartment was not ready but we were taken there anyway while they were still cleaning it. Had to ask for top sheets and pillowcases, whis we hadn't seen the state of the pillows. The bathroom had to be seen to be believed broken toilet seat and a toilet that needed a bottle of bleach to get it anything like clean. No way could you self-cater in this apartment lack of equipment and cleanliness no mop or anything so we could clean ourselves. After 4 had been showered with the handheld shower it was very dangerous to walk on the ceramic tiles we had to put a towel on the floor to soak all the water. Having said all this we had a great holiday and meet some lovely people pool area was very good and kept very clean Katerina and Christos were very friendly and laidback It seemed to us that lot of store was put on the pool area and not on the apartments. We would not go back here and am afraid we could not recomend this accomodation to anyone.

The Arianna apartments are just lovely, My sister and I stayed here for 1 week and it was not long enough! We are in our early 20's and loved it, defiantly good for all ages, couples and families. When we arrived we were met by Katerina (one of the owners) she was really lovely and took us upstairs to the bar area for a welcome drink. The pool area is clean and is surrounded by plants including grape vines and even a fig tree. You are welcome to help yourself to whatever you want. The owners of the apartments do not disappear and neglect their guests, they work hard to ensure everyone is happy and will offer advise about the local area. Christos certainly does not 'slag off' other restaurants, he often sings in other hotels etc for free and is the president of paleokastritsa so certainly has no need to do this. He does however emphasis his efforts in cooking fresh meat and would ask guests what they would like for dinner and go out on his bike especially for us. The food Katerina cooked was delicious! Christos has to be one of the most entertaining men in Greece! He will certainly tell you all about 'the greek way' and will happily climb up the tree behind the apartments to pick fresh grapes for his guests! If you enjoy a laid back holiday for the feel and culture you will certainly enjoy this one. The local beach is about a 5 minute walk down the hill and there is a shop at the bottom that is well stocked. If you enjoy walking you can explore many of the beaches in the area, remember to take a snorkel set if this is your thing, the waters are clear and you can see fish everywhere. This resort is naturally beautiful and if you care for scenic views and relaxation then this is the place for you. The other guests were also all lovely and by the end of the stay at the Arianna you seem to know everyone well, so leaving is sad! We hope to go back one day! Thanks for a fab holiday to everyone at the Arianna! ---Alexia and Lauren---

Back home after a 2 week stay at the Arianna - unfortunately the minuses outweigh the pluses! The pluses are Katerina and her willingness to help, Anna and Ariadne the daughters who were helpful and polite, the pool and its surroundings, single beds and not sofa beds for the children (allbeit brick hard).
The minuses are, standard of cleaning of the apartments ( cobwebs in the bathroom, hairs on the veranda, floors unmopped etc), the bathroom was a shower tray with a crappy shower head which sprayed water everywhere but where it should have gone and no water between 6.45 and 7.15pm every night, the kitchen area was one cupboard with a piece of worktop no more than 700mm long with another piece approx 600mm long x 300mm wide, just enough width for a two ring baby belling hot plate and kettle (which we had to ask for), a fridge with a door that didnt close so we had to fill a 5ltr bottle of water and use as a weight against the door, lack of evening entertainment. The greek night was a solitary dance more akin to Turkey (belly dance) than Greece, a male dancer who looked like he had been dragged of the street to take part and the owner singing (probably the best act of the night if tuth be told!).The main minus i'm sorry to say was Christos the owner, his constant slagging off of the other restaurants in paleo for not using fresh produce etc and bad mouthing the non english speaking nationalities for not spending any money in his bar. Even though the price of his food and drink was very reasonable we only had lunches there and the last drink before bed as we felt that if we stayed for our evening meal we would have been subjected to his rant, which we knew off by heart by the end of our stay! We met some lovely families whilst we were there, others had returned year after year and i'm sorry but I cant see the attraction. I did have an altercation with Christos over taking a sunbed from its position because it was earmarked for a member of a family which had stayed there on 3 previous occasions. We even had a sunbed taken off us whilst our towel was still on the bloody thing!!! We felt that if you had stayed there before you were made to feel like one of the family whereas if it was the first time you were being left out of "the family group". The Arianna is located up a steep incline of approx 250m from the main road and not the 30m it states in brochures and on signs locally. The area of paleo is very picturesque with nice coves and lovely views when frequenting the various beachside tavernas but it lacks something for the kids and because of this we probably wont be returning.
