Several years ago ,we stayed in Thassos Town and admired the location of Hotel Angelica. Situated by the old port and close to the town shopping /eating area,I felt I would return to the Angelica .

My wife Angela was 60 last month and as a surprise arranged a weeks holiday at the Angelica. Our room was on the first floor , massive room and a large balcony. Every evening we sat on the balcony people watching . Breakfast was brilliant , wide range of food and the home made lemon juice was out of this world. We ate breakfast and had marvellous views of the fishing boats returning to port.
Highlight’s breakfast , clean room and brilliant balcony views.

Room Tip: Despite being opposite fun fair ,noise and disturbance minimal. Rooms overlooking the harbour have the best views.

On a evening trip to Thasos Town we found this hotel. We just had drinks sat overlooking the harbour. A beer and a glass of the best wine I drank on Thasos was €11. We were given fresh fruit and crisps. We loved it so much we stayed for another drink. May be a bit pricey but so worth it. Lovely place to do a spot of people watching.

The bar prices change ... one day large Mythos Draught €4 and the next 24% on the receipt ... now €5 (which is expensive by island standards). Rude bar manager too! Nice location but obviously not honest.

This is the only hotel in Thassos town which overlooks the picturesque old harbour. In fact it’s on a promontory, so it faces both harbours, old and new. We were lucky enough to get the only room with a wrap-around balcony facing both ways, so we had sun (and, more important, shade) all day long. This is called a ‘Premium Room’ (No 123, if you’re interested), the most expensive of the three room grades, but in low season excellent value for money. It is spacious and immaculately clean, with fridge, large wardrobe, very comfortable bed and pillows, plus a small but well designed bathroom. Decor and fittings are of a high standard and – most important – everything works: constant hot water, good shower, efficient air con, excellent lighting etc. The large flat-screen TV did not have any English-speaking channels, so if the management want to attract more UK guests, they ought to invest in a satellite dish. No one comes to Thassos to watch TV, but the availability of BBC World or CNN is expected at hotels of this standard.

The location of the hotel is perfect, with all tavernas, bars and cafés within a ten minute walk. Its own delightful outside bar, with comfortable sofas, chairs and parasols on a patch of (artificial but convincing) grass, is popular with locals and tourists alike. Yes, there is some noise from the small fairground opposite, but this will only irritate those who hate the sound of kids enjoying themselves. We hired a car for half of our two-week stay (essential if you want to explore this fascinating and beautiful island) and were always able to park right outside the hotel. (In high season, you may have to use the free public car park some two minutes’ walk away.)

We cannot comment on breakfast, as the kitchen was undergoing refurbishment during our stay. If you prefer room-only terms, there are several cafe’s offering breakfast nearby. Last but not least, the staff here are exemplary – friendly, bright, multi-lingual, efficient and attentive. This hotel will not suit those who simply wish to lie by a swimming pool (there isn’t one), but it you want an excellent base for exploring the island, with a balcony offering the best views in town – you need look no further.

Room Tip: The Premium Rooms are worth the extra, especially in low season
