“Wow what a great week!”
Reviewed September 14, 2012

What a fantastic spot.. And great accommodation. Clean, more than adequate for a holiday in the sun. We had a lovely terrace and although on the lower level areti 1 still had amazing sea views. A very warm welcome on arrival and the family/staff very particular to ensure needs are met. The food at the pool bar was lovely especially the Greek salads! Room cleaned every day as well as the dishes washed!! We will definitely be returning to the Areti and the hill we can forgive! Good exercise to work off the good food we enjoyed during our stay.

Room Tip: If you are planning to do a big shop and cook alot yourself the Areti 1 is less of a climb! However...

Having read some of the reviews about the Areti I was pretty apprehensive about my visit. My boyfriend and I returned on Friday from a weeks stay at the Areti 1 and I can honestly say we enjoyed every second. During our stay we didn't witness any cockroaches, rats or any other unwanted guests, neither did we experience anything other than spotlessly clean apartments, yes they are basic but they are adequately equipped, spacious and clean. The maids came in 6 out of the 7 days and even washed up for us a few mornings after we'd rushed out to the pool. I feel that the jewel in Areti 's crown is by far the pool area and it's stunning views, you can watch the impressive yachts sailing to and from the beach, gaze at the beautiful Aegean ocean or, if you're lucky like we were, spot the dolphins playing out to sea. The pool itself is a decent size, clean and just the right temperature to cool you down in the blistering heat but not so cold it gives you frostbite! There are plenty of sunloungers but not so many that you're crammed in like sardines, lovely furniture with shaded canopies and a small but well stocked bar. Lots of people have also mentioned the steep hill that the Areti sits on top of and I will admit that, on first impressions, the hill is intimidating. However it really isn't as bad as it seems. I am 20 weeks pregnant and I was still able to manage the hills well, you just need to take your time. All in all I feel that the Areti deserves more than its 2 stars and I would definitely go back and certainly would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: All rooms have a good view however Areti 1 are the lower apartments meaning not as much of a steep i...

My husband and I booked this 10 days before departure. Travelled with son aged 16 and daughter aged 13. I had been to Skiathos a few times, many years ago so knew the rest of the family would find this island lovely too. As it was a last minute booking all that was available was a "studio for 4 with double bed" Areti looked lovely with really great trip advisor reviews so thought it was worth being squashed for a week. My son noticed the unhelpful review had been posted a couple of days before we left. Having worked in Greece (was a rep for Manos 20 years ago) i didn't take it too seriously as there will always be negative people who want to find fault in anything, but it did take a bit of the shine off our excitement. We were delighted when we were shown to our studio, room 27. Not only did it have an "upstairs" where the double bed was it also had an upstairs bathroom too..The private balcony comfortably sat the 4 of us and had breathtaking views. We could just see the pool and bar area and through our time the only noise we heard was a bit of laughter. The pool and bar area is beautifully clean, well maintained and set out. Its position is really a one off, well worth a little steep hill! Our room and all areas in it were beautifully clean, and continued to be cleaned to that standard all week. The bins were emptied every day. Not sure how the walls cold be described as "paper thin." On one side we had a famiy with two girls who we only heard coming in one night. On the other the Greek family owners who we did hear when all the doors were open obviously but that wasn't before 9 in the morning. I hope our talking on the balcony every night after 11 didn't disturb them. Room 27 is spacious with all the facilities you would expect in Greece and Areti had more than the standard ie hairdryer, kettle. Bathrooms without shower screens will always get wet, They soon dry in Greece. Everyone was very helpful including the rep. The upstairs bathroom light wasnt working when we arrived, but after I mentioned it was fixed by the time we went back to the room a few hours later. One observation about the welcome meeting, why dont guests get a drink even if its water as it was a long one?
Troulos beach is really lovely and ideal for all ages. Turn right at bottom of Areti drive and keep straight road for 20 mins it is sign posted.Small supermarket there along with beach side tavernas and a "fast food" taverna selling gorgeous gyros for 2.50 euros. It is far nicer than Aghia Paraskevi beach. In general the roads are not something I would have been happy negotiating with small children as you always need to be single file. The buses are great(part of the Greek experience) and Skiathos town a must for an evening meal and stroll along the ports.
We like traditional Greek menus and weren't disappointed. A mention for Troulos would be Appaloosa, Captain Nikos really wants to provide a good service and succeeds. In Aghia Paraskevi, George at Areti recomended the Green Park for good home made Greek food and that was delicious. Avil ? think it was called, turn left off the main road there was also really good with very friendly helpful owner. Supermarket in Troulos sells lovely spinach pies. Cant recommend Areti highly enough as a beautifu setting and Skiathos as unspoilt as it was 20 years ago.

Myself and my partner stayed at the areti for a week and did not once see a cockroach or rat...the only pest was the dreaded mosquito. What a fabulous stunning place skiathos is and the areti is spotlessly clean with excellent service. We never heard an ounce of noise at night from the bar either and we know there were nights the bar didnt shut till early hours of the morning. As for there being nothing there, ive been to a kos, kefalonia and now skiathos and its the most stunning greek island weve been to. We hired a quad for the week and we saw every inch of the island with its lush pine mountains and quaint hidden beaches and we fell in love with the place. Greece is basic anywhere you go but the areti catered for our needs and what more do you need on holiday then a cooker a shower a toilet and a bed? If the highlight of my holiday was to walk a stray dog i would have to question my life style not where i stayed! I would highly recommend skiathos and the areti the view from our room was breath taking and also the views from the bar were amazing to. George the barman was a funny little man with excellent taste in music. Go there you wont be disappointed!!

Got back from staying at the Areti Apartments about an hour ago and despite being very tired from the journey I simply had to respond to the really negative review I heard about which had appeared (which was discussed around the pool in detail). We spent a week at the Areti 1 Apartments. Firstly I would say that whilst basic and some rooms being on the small size, our stay was wonderful and real value for money. George at the pool bar makes the best cocktails in Skiathos (his greek salad is also pretty good) and he was more than happy to advise on good places to eat and things to do. Yes the apartments are a ten minute walk to the nearest taverna this really did not affect our stay in fact it made it incredibly peaceful at times. It is located on a busy main road but most apartments on the main road in Skiathos are. The bus stop is right outside the door, buses into town every twenty mins at a cost of 2 euro, they were busy at times but to be perfectly honest they are busy here at home at rush hours. There is a hard slope to walk up to get to the pool but this is the case in many of the apartments in Skiathos due mainly to the terrain of the local area. The pool was on the small size but we never had a problem getting a sun lounger and the views over skaithos more than made up for the size. We never heard a peep from the pool bar whilst sat in our apartment, in fact the first 2 nights we presumed it was closed due to lack of noise. The balconys are like any other apartment, next to each other, I am not sure many places could offer you a private balcony. We had no issue from noise from any of the surrounding apartments, saw not a single cockraoch or rat and I can honestly say the place and grounds were absolutely spotless. The cleaner was one of the best i have ever come across, she even did our dishes which made me feel quite quilty. We hired a scooter and it took us about 10 minutes to drive into town but the bus journey takes around twenty minutes, the last bus from skiathos town departs at 11pm we never had an issue getting on it. A taxi costs around 12 euro. On the plus side there are also a few nice retaurants nearby, the green park was the best meal we had whilst in Skiathos (recommended by George), Ambrosia and Nektar was also really good. We would have liked to try Salt and Pepper which was a ten minute walk away but it was fully booked every night (strange that... considering its supposedly a ghost town!!!!!!). We visited the Evangelistria Monestery (also on George's recommendation) by scooter it was well worth the trip although only attempt the journey on scooter if you are an experienced rider. Maybe the person who previously commented had some issues caused by other guests, but during our stay it really was a haven. All I can say is I am very glad i chose the Areti and had a fabulous time, thanks to all the staff who made our stay so good.

Personally I think the below review titled 'Don't stay here...Cockroaches and noise' is unhelpful, unpleasant and a gross misrepresentation of Areti as a whole. Therefore I will organise the format of my review in a point-by-point revision of the aforementioned critique.

1) "STEEP HILL"
My girlfriend and I stayed at Areti for 1 week in early July. We were in the top floor of the top level apartments at the top of the "steep hill". Firstly, whilst the hill is quite steep, it is not long and takes well under a minute to walk up. We are a young couple but made friends with a number of older couples during the week who also had no issue with the incline.

2) "NOISE FROM BAR & POOL"
Noise from the pool bar in the evenings was never an issue for us, although this is probably because we were often the last to leave the bar. The people staying at a hotel generally dictate how noisy the place will be in the evening; perhaps those who require complete silence should consider a private villa for future holidays. We never witnessed any complaints about noise and most of the residents spent time at the bar of an evening as it was a wonderful communal place with a friendly atmosphere.
The "waiter" who apparently didn't know anything about Areti is called George and was one of the highlights of our trip (as previous reviews mention). He was friendly and helpful and gave us a number or recommendations on beaches and restaurants to visit, not to mention being very sad to see us go. The pool, whilst quite small was bigger than a splash pool and had plenty of room to swim around in. We made the conscious decision to visit before school's were out and as a result did not see a child round the pool for the entire week. Consequently the pool area was a very relaxing, and stunningly beautiful place to spend time.

3)"CASES DUMPED AT THE TOP OF THE HILL"
The reason the cases are taken separately for the Areti was explained on transfer from the airport; as the bus has to stop on the road to unload passengers there is not enough time to unload luggage as well. Therefore a separate vehicle takes your luggage for you to the top of the hill. This was actually beneficial as you avoid having to carry them up yourself.

4)"ROOM BETWEEN TWO OTHERS"
Have you every stayed in a hotel before? Or even been in a large building? Generally speaking, with the exception of those located on the ends of buildings, there are always going to be rooms situated between two others, and believe it or not, above and below others too! My only advice here is to book early if you think this is likely to be an issue for you. We stayed on the top floor at the far end of the building and experienced no "paper thin wall" issues and did not hear any noise from any other rooms for the entire week. Our room was clean and regularly attended by the cleaning ladies. The only point worth mentioning was the lack of hot water. The apartments from what we gathered had only a small boiler and consequently only those up early in the mornings and first to shower in the evening received hot water. This was a bit shock to the system the first day or two but once you'd had a few day's sun a cold shower was a welcome treat.

5) "THOMPSON REP COULDN'T BE BOTHERED"
Sarah's her name and she was friendly and helpful. It was Sarah who found out about the hot water issue for us and was on hand 2-3 times during the week for enquires and general advice. When we first arrived we spoke to her about the possibility of changing our room as we had a smaller than average balcony (being on the end of the building). In the end we decided not to change but she was willing and helpful nevertheless.

6) "GHOST TOWN"
Troulos was a wonderful little village/town. Whilst much quieter than Skiathos Town there were a number of restaurants to choose from and beached within a short walking distance. Pick of the bunch were Salt & Pepper and Appaloosa; the latter a local taverna run by Captain Nico with an extensive menu of traditional Greek food at a great price. Furthermore, if nothing on the menu enticed you he would happily cook from request. Salt & Pepper in contrast was a more touristy restaurant type setting but the food and service was fantastic and on the evening we went there was live music to a good standard.

7) "DANGEROUS ROAD"
The road didn't have pavements that's true but as long as you were careful and walked on the edge of the road there wasn't an issue. Walk towards oncoming traffic and be a bit more cautious on the corners. It's a wide road so cars, bikes and quads gave you no problems, the only transport worth watching out for were the buses. You have to realise your visiting a small Greek Island here that's smaller than Heathrow Airport! Not a thriving modern metropolis.

8) "SMELLY BUSES"
We took the bus twice and neither time was it smelly or full. In addition the driver was friendly and called us when it was our stop. If you don't fancy the bus there's plenty of taxis zipping around which are inexpensive. If you plan on getting out and seeing the island, I would highly recommend a quad-bike. We hired one for 4 days and it was the best decision we made. They can take you ANYWHERE! Whilst the main road in Skiathos that runs along the south coast of the island is tarmac, most of the other roads are dirt tracks, and some of them can get bumpy. Our quad took us right up into the mountains of the north of the island and down some fairly steep off-road tracks into quiet, deserted coves and beaches = AMAZING! Was a nice feeling not to feel cooped up in a car too and better for the tan :-)

9) SKIATHOS TOWN
The town is great, plenty to see and do both for the older sightseeing tourist and the young party-seeking. Plenty of bars and clubs and the locals are very friendly. Tavernas and restaurants round ever corner as well as the usual tacky gift shops. We didn't experience any owners trying to drag us into their restaurants either! I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND trying one of the local kebabs (gyros) and if you can find it admist the narrow winding streets the best place for it according to the locals is called "No Name".

On the whole we had a great time in Skiathos and would recommend Areti to anyone. You have to remember you're booking 2 Star accommodation so the rooms, whilst clean and perfectly adequate are simplistic and without certain amenities you might take for granted in more expensive hotels. We had two power outlets which was sufficient and the fridge was big and cold. Air conditioning is not included in the price but is available as an add-on from the pool bar/reception - not too expensive.

Have just returned from 14 night stay in the Areti 1 apartments. We weren't sure whether to book Areti or Areti 1 and Thompson who we booked with were absolutely useless and didn't know the difference (even consulting trip advisor!). To clarify the complex is built on a slope and Areti 1 apartments are at the bottom (still a hard walk up a steep hill) and Areti at the top nearer the pool and bar. Noise some nights from the bar which you could even hear at the bottom of complex. The pool at the top although with beautiful views over sea was very small. It should have been peaceful and quiet but it only took a few noisy couples/families diving about to completely ruin the pool area. A few times we got to the pool after ten and the small selection of sun loungers had gone so we went to the beach instead (two nearby beaches within a ten and 15 minute walk-8 euros for 2 sun loungers and umbrella).
On arrival out cases arrived seperately (this is standard in Skiathos) and were dumped at the top of the hill-there was no-one around and we wondered about to the pool bar where the waiter said he didn't know anything about Areti1 and to go and find 'Nina'. She was no where to be seen and we waited in the boiling heat for 15 minutes looking for her. Finally she turned up and showed us to our room. Very dissapointed. Room was in the middle of two others with no private balcony or partition between the rooms. The view was beautiful but you couldn't relax or have any privacy when you sat out as there were other travellers from the other two rooms sitting out too. It was very uncomfortable all round as you were listening to each others conversations and were very conscious of each other. Walls paper thin and had NO sleep for the entire two weeks-people sitting out on their balconys above us scraping chairs and talking-wardrobe doors banging, oh and we had a rat under the cupboards under the kitchen sink scraping all night every night. Sound travelled through the bathroom-you could hear EVERYTHING people were saying. TV from next door sounded very loud in our room and was on at 2.00am. For a week there were young children next door kicking footballs against the wall and screaming and shouting. We tried to change our room - Thompson rep couldn't be bothered and left it to us to sort with Nina who spoke little English and said she had one other room which by her own admission was even more noisy than ours. The Thompson rep didn't help us or follow up at all and made us feel our problems were trivial-they only care about selling you excursions and when you don't buy them they couldn't care less. Sorry, but we went to Skiathos for peace and quiet-noise is the biggest problem you could have!!!! Also, the apartments are self catering and although we ate out a lot-some people will spend a large chunk of their holiday around their room and want some privacy! Came home at night to cockroaches running about the floor. Aside from the cockroaches the sheets and bathroom were very clean. Shower handheld and no curtain so soaking wet bathroom after each shower but then this is typical for Greece.
The resort - there is NOTHING to do at all-a ghost town. We are used to Greece and don't like noisy resorts but it is nice to have a good variety of restaurants and shops/bars. There is absolutely nothing here except a dirt track with a few tavernas scattered about. Cannot believe that other travellers have not mentioned the terrible and frankly dangerous road that you have to walk down to get anywhere-beach or restaurants. There is no path and so have to walk IN the road. A few times we nearly got hit around blind corners and buses and bikes/quad bikes driving about 80 miles an hour. You honestly do take your life in your hands on this road and it was really unenjoyable walking up and down it especially in the dark. Am surprised that Thompson recommend such dangerous accommodation. We rented a car for five days which was essential and went to Skiathos town at night which is where the life is and absolutely brilliant. The best tavernas are without a doubt in Skiathos Town which is a twenty minute car journey. There is a bus to take you around the island but it was always packed and you would have to stand up in 100 degree heat for a 25 minute smelly journey to the town? Not our idea of fun. We would highly recommend visiting the Dog Sanctuary if you get a car where you can walk a stray dog. The bus doesn't go here and Thompson charge 50 euros to take you and to the nearby Monastry-what a rip off- it is free to walk the dogs-they just ask for a small donation and the Monastry is free. Overall, I would really not recommend these apartments. The only reason we booked Skiathos was for peace and quiet and we had constant noise all holiday and couldn't relax. The resort could be very peaceful and enjoyable if you have quiet accommodation (not at Areti). Although if you like a resort anywhere near lively I would search elsewhere. Don't rely on Thompson to help you out with any problems either.

Room Tip: Stay in Areti-not Areti 1. Although Areti is near the pool and bar and may be some bar noise, Areti...
