“Exceptional for the price paid clean apartment with lovely views”
Reviewed June 19, 2012

This was a last minute booking at a very reasonable price - we didn't expect much. The studio apartment was compact but very clean and provided a kitchenette with basics for cooking - quite honestly it was only suitable for snacks/light meals but it is so reasonable to eat out locally. The bus service is excellent - very reasonable and buses run every 15/20 minutes approx. The slope to the actual apartments is quite steep but it's well lit in the evening and my partner and I are not the youngest fittest people but if you take your time it's not a problem - at the end of the week we were proud to be walking up without stopping. We went with Thompson's and the rep Sarah was brilliant. It's a nice easy downhill walk to villages at both sides of the apartment & there are some excellent tavernas - would strongly recommend Jimmy's. You can get a bus back as these run until quite late - I wouldn't recommend walking as it's pretty dark and it is a steep walk back although we did walk on a couple of occasions. The beaches are wonderful - that's all I can say-. Again it's a pleasant walk down - jump on the bus to get back - approx 3 minutes. we spent a couple of days around the pool which is also very clean. We found the music to be okay and the guests were actually telling the bar staff what they wanted them to play - the pool is a good size and we always got a sun bed although there's not many and this could be a problem in the busy months. All the staff were friendly and quite honestly all the people we met were very friendly and your custom was appreciated in bars, tavernas etc. I found the supermarkets a bit pricey & would recommend you take the basics - tea coffee and butter was over 4 euros for a small tub. I would also bring a small washing up liquid and a cloth/scourer.You will also need beach towels. They provide bath towels but they are on the small side but clean & changed regulary. You can get a good English breakfast at the bar and a limited choice of generously portioned snacks. The air conditioning which I consider a necessity was 40 euros & don't forget your insect repellants & mosquito machines & sun lotions as these are more expensive than at home and you will need them. Overall a great holiday will be going back. People have said this is remote but many of the apartments are quite remote and not many offer such a wonderful view. For couples I think this is great but I wouldn't take young children and there's not much excapt for the beach and it would be a trek with a pram - also not suitable if you have walking difficulties. Hope you found this helpful.

We have just returned after a week in the areti apartments ! I was a bit concerned about the few negatives I saw on trip advisor buti think now people just moan about little things and you should get on and enjoy the holidays !

This was perfect for us , we are a young couple who took my parents away , we had two studio rooms next to each other with the most fantastic sea views !
The rooms are basic but clean no mould on tiles in the bathroom like someone mentioned, beds were comfy and we had clean sheets and towels during our stay ! The only thing I would take next time is a bath mat as there are no shower curtains and water just goes everywhere in the bathroom !

The pool area was clean and all the grounds were very well kept and as for the views , they were beautiful .

The hill is steep up to apartments but your in no rush you can take a slow walk up, we got a car as we were out and about a lot .

George is very helpfull at the bar in the afternoons and all eve as we're all the staff but George gets to know you.

We recommend the green park resturant in agia paraskevi it's a bit off the main road but best food , also infinity blue and salt and pepper is lovely in trulos.
For the views drive up to the panorama resturant wow !! In one word , skiathos town is great as well so many places and not enough time in one week .

If you have a morning spare go to the dog shelter and take some dog food up from the supermarket and take a few dogs for a walk , they do some great work here .

All in all fantastic holiday def go back to areti again .

We stayed for the last week in May, just before their official 'holiday season'. Many of the pros and cons are set out in earlier reviews, so I'll stick to a few personal impressions which I hope will help others make their choices. We wanted a relaxing break, with sunbathing, sightseeing and good food (our apartment's kitchen, though perfectly adequate, didn't get much use!!).

1. Reception is at the pool bar at the top of the driveway - only nobody told us this.
There is no signage, so try there first if there is no-one to greet you.

2. The pool area is lovely.
There were always sunbeds free and the pool is fabulous - a reasonable size, spotlessly clean and heated only by the sun - wonderful! BUT the young bar staff tended to play Ibiza-style 'drum & base' dance music, which was awful - especially as (at 50+) I was the youngest person there!
(Unfortunately, loud music is common in many of the tavernas and on some beaches too).

3. We had the famous room 21 (ground floor next to the maid's room).
Our room was great - although the living area was a bit dark. Essential equipment is provided in the kitchen, but absolutely nothing else - eg. no washing-up liquid or cloth/tea-towel. In the bathroom, towels (clean but well used) are changed regularly, and there is loo roll!!
Ours, was a wall shower - a sort of wet room. BEWARE, the floor tiles throughout the appt. are slippery when wet. Water was usually hotter in the evening than in the morning. This didn't bother us, but other residents who preferred morning showers were a bit displeased.
My pet dislike (we all have them) was the lack of mattress protectors, or equivalent. I don't like having just a sheet between me and a mattress that dozens of others have slept on.
The maids were wonderful - probably the friendliest of the staff (despite their lack of English and our lack of Greek).
Trees and bushes outside the ground floor accommodation do disturb the sea view, and if that bothers you, ask for a first or second floor apartment. On the other hand, the scent from the blossoms is fabulous and you get to see the beautiful butterflies and bees at close quarters from your patio.

4. Location and nearby facilities were perfect for us.
From the bottom of the driveway, 15mins walk to left to Agia Paraskevi or 10 mins right to Troulos takes you to tavernas and/or small supermarkets. Either way it's downhill, which means that the return journey is always uphill. We didn't find this difficult and there wasn't a lot of traffic so we enjoyed the walks. Probably not so much fun in high season, though.
Bus stop 17 is just outside the apartments if you prefer to ride.

5. Recommendations.
BEACH - the nearest beach is accessed by steep and treacherous steps. Much better to go to Troulos beach (20 min walk or by bus).
TAVERNAS - our personal favs. were the 'Avli' and 'Calma' in Agia Paraskevi. Both family run with lovely traditional food. Also 'Salt and Pepper' in Troulos - often mentioned in reviews, so v. busy. Be prepared to wait for a table.
WALKS - get a decent map, and have a walk around the beautiful north shore of Skiathos and the more forested interior. Absolutely stunning!

Looking forward to our next trip!

Just back from the Areti and yes the views from the pool are amazing, but being that high up comes at a price - the slope! There are no tavernas, bars or supermarkets within the vacinity of the apartments. They are a 10 minute walk left or right along the main road, which has no pavement. The reception doubles up as the pool bar. Although breakfast is on the menu here the pool bar does not open until 10 a.m., which was too late for us. It was also shut by about 10 pm, when we returned from our evening meal out. Would not return to these apartments, if I came back I would go to Agia Paraskevi.

Just back from our first time to skiathos and definately not the last, however not to these apartments due to the very steep slope, I'm in my 50's and my partner 60's and it killed us, yes the views are to die for, if you aint dead before you get there! Haha. There are two levels and we stayed in the lower, but had to climb to get to the pool/bar area, but the view from the loo was amazing! Extremely clean all round, the cleaners came everyday, fresh towels/bed. There was lighting up the drive but not along the 3 studios to the right that led to our door so you do need a torch. I took repellent and still got bit to death so take some room plug-ins. At the end of the drive you have to turn left or right and walk 10min to get to a shop/bar either up hill or down, sounds easy but seems twice as far when you're coming back at night. We hired a quad bike for several days and its the best way to see the island, we took many side tracks as there is only one main road and found lovely beaches everywhere, over 60 on the island! Dog sanctuary a must!

Room Tip: choose balcony higher up, we had too many trees lower down

We stayed here twice this year, a week in June and 2 weeks in Aug - we love it that much. The apartments are fabulous, spotlessly clean and extremely spacious. We usually stay in room 27 and 28 - both have outstanding seaviews with gorgeous balconies. In Aug we stayed in room 21 which was also fantastic. Spotlessly clean, large and airy rooms, good sized bathroom, double bedroom and the added bonus of a large living area next to the kitchen. Again beautiful views from the front with a courtyard style balcony. The areti has some of the best views of the island, staff and cleaners are so friendly and will go out of their way to help you, beautiful bar and pool and very charming barnam Vincent welcomed guests at the bar. We would thoroughly recommend the Areti - this is our 12th year back in Skiathos and we have stayed at The Areti each time - it now feels home from home and will definitely be back next year!

Areti Studio & Apartments near Troulos, Skiathos

We stopped in one of the studios on the ground floor, number 9 to be exact, from the 9th to 16th of September 2011 booking the trip 3 days prior to departure.

Being an avid Trip Advisor I had read the mixed reports and was a little concern at some of the negative ones and thought they must have some substance but realized the majority were pretty good. So hopefully my contribution will help you decide with a bit more confidence.

I have been holidaying in Greece for over 35 years (I’m now in my early 60’s) on and off and have stopped in many self catering establishments some good and some bad. Let me say straight away that this is one of the better ones though it only appears to be rated as 2 star. I think a few things could be better but then most places could but over all it was jolly good and we had a great holiday.

I will deal with the negatives first:-

The fantastic views from this location are obviously obtained by all the accommodation being on the top of a very steep hill. The studios and Apartments are in tiers up the hillside with a lot of steps and steep slopes. Therefore if you have very young children, are unstable on your feet or are infirmed then this could be a major problem for you. Even if you hire a car for the duration of your stay you will still have to find a place to park and this maybe a fair distance away from your room. The chances are that you would still have to cope with some steps.

If you are reasonably able bodied then the hills and steps will not be too much of a problem but be aware that you will still have to negotiate the road at the bottom of the drive to the Areti. As mention by many other reviewers this requires a great deal of caution and a torch is a must, especially of course at night. On the plus side there is a bus stop (No.17) at the bottom of the drive and it costs 2 Euro’s to go to the terminus in either direction or 1.6 Euro’s for just 1 stop. The bus stop is right on a bend and not the best place for one so caution is required here to. If you go to Skiathos Town it’s 2 Euro’s each way per person, you can also get a taxi for 8 Euro’s so this may work out cheaper if there are four of you – the drivers are still into a bit of bartering.

The rooms are basic on English standards, our room had single beds, a little balcony with table and 2 chairs, hand held shower, twin plate cooker, a kettle and a fridge - definitely not the place to knock up the Sunday roast. This is Greece and that’s the sort of facilities you normally get, I’ve never known any other for 2/3 star accommodation. A safe is 15 Euros a week and the Air-con is 45 Euros per week, thought these prices were rather high.

Positives:-

I did see one reviewer complaining about the room we stopped in, or near by, which was next to the two maids/cleaners accommodation. We found the girls polite and courteous and yes they did smoke a little but not at all enough to offend us (we don’t smoke – possibly now the world’s worst critics) and they made very little noise – no more than anyone else in the accommodation anyway. The main thing was they were good at there jobs, always cleaning up, sweeping & polishing. Our room despite being basic was always spotless and clean after their daily (Except Sunday) chores making it an exceptional two star property. Certainly there were no signs of damp but yes a slight smell of cleaning fluids after they had done but surely that can be expected and is required.

The view is stunning even from our room which once again surprisingly someone complain about, but we thought it was better as it was more dramatically framed by mature olive trees and various other trees outside our little patio area. The trees also offered a welcome bit of shade even in mid September when it was 35 degrees. It’s just personal preferences here but it is so surprising that someone does not like it when something is so nice - we never heard anyone complain about their view and we spoke to most the residents.

The views are possibly best from the pool area which is an exceptional area with a good balance of table, chairs, sun beds and shades. The pool itself is more than adequate for most adults unless you are the type that wants to do 50 lengths a day rather than chill out and relax and have a nice dip – you can still have a good swim as it is ranges from about 3- 8 foot deep. The bar area was what you would expect with a reasonable range of drinks and a few very nice snacks – but shame it closed early evening and was never open when you returned from your evening outings to the not so near taverner’s, you certainly need a drink after walking up the hill.

There are many walks around the island but in particular there is a impressive one starting just a few yards from the bottom of Areti’s drive that takes you right over the mountain at the rear of Areti complex with spectacular panoramic views - a must if you are that way inclined – but choose a cool day.

No mosquito’s at Areti due to it’s high position but plenty in low lying areas and around the coast at Koukounaries so take your repellents.

Summary:-

I have realised over the years after reading loads of reviews that when people start complaining about TV’s not having British programs, Macdonalds not being around the corner and the likes, whilst they are on their foreign holidays, that they must be very narrow-minded and ought to get a life. At the very least gives all a break and take your holidays in Skegness or Blackpool, you are guaranteed to get your can't do without essentials there.

Skiathos is a lovely island with loads to see and do, very much like Greece used to be 30 years ago it’s a lot greener than most areas and is worth a visit anytime. If you have never been to Greece before it’s time you did, but go with an open mind, accept that the Greeks do not do everything we do in the UK and then you will enjoy this wonderfully friendly country and its fabulous scenery. If you have been to Greece before and know what generally the self catering accommodation is like you will not be disappointed with the Areti.

Beer on average 3 Euros per pint (Greek)

On beach 2 x sun beds and umbrella 8 Euros

Room Tip: Higher rooms have a more open view
