Reviewed December 21, 2013 via mobile

Awesome property, huge, beautiful, green and well maintained. Kids will love this place. Beach is peaceful and clean too. But if you are looking to explore the Goa then you definitely need to go out of Goa, definitely move beyond a resort.

When you want to be in Goa, you are there for a reason. One of them is definitely having the beach at your disposal. Some of the others could be the party scene, cheap booze or simply Goa being a bachelors paradise.

Now what this hotel has is only the beach among the above things you are possibly looking for. This hotel is located on a beach which is very far from the party scene and there are not a lot of things around this hotel except for a good restaurant which serves great food called "Fisherman's Wharf" - highly recommend this hotel. If you are looking for partying, you would have to travel pretty far to get to something decent.

But on the brighter side, this hotel has a lovely pool, a kid pool, a golf course, lovely landscaped gardens, great food and awesome guests.

Now weigh your options folks and decide if this place is for you.

It is the perfect holiday resort. Set in a massive 75 acre property, the first glimpse of the resort would actually make you go 'wow'! We got an amazing welcome with tilaks and garlands, followed by refreshing coconut water, not to mention the the airport transfer by a BMW 7 series. The drive takes a little under an hour from the airport as the hotel is located in the far end of South Goa. The lobby is really impressive, even though a little humid, as it is open and not air-conditioned, but it adds to the overall feel of the hotel. The beach is a private one, as the only access is through the hotel, and really clean and quiet. The room was big and spacious, and had a extended living room at the end, which our daughter totally loved as she could watch her own TV! the view from the room was lovely too as it looked out into the lagoon with the beautiful blooming lotuses and the ducks with their little ducklings splashing happily about in the water! the room was got was a little far from the main lobby, but the hotel has golf carts for transportation, even though we always preferred to walk. The hotel is very strategically located between the sea and the river 'Saal' and has a host of dining options, the Italian restaurant being located on the riverfront, and Susegado, on the beach. I found the beachfront restaurant a tad expensive though, for the food that was served. The food was good, good service. The pool is normal sized, not too big, and not too deep...the cave at the end of the pool was a nice experience. They have a children pool as well. Other options to keep kids busy was the Kids Zone, they have different things going on at different times, and have a host of games and books to occupy the kids.
All in all, a very rewarding and relaxing experience, would definitely go back!

Room Tip: If you need a room close to the restaurant/lobby/ beachside, go for the rooms starting with the 4 se...

The Leela makes a great impression on arrival, with a beautiful foyer, very photogenic. The grounds are expansive and beautifully kept, the beach is quiet (due to location) and the sea is good for swimming (as Goa goes).

I emailed the hotel twice prior to our arrival regarding the transfer and 'never' did receive a reply. However the airport representative was very good.

The sea was even calmer for swimming at the end of the peninsula, 10 mins and the the beach was deserted near the Bamboo cottages ( which incidentally has very well looked after and happy beach dogs, basic cottages and cafe).

The woman hawkers on the beach were friendly and not too pushy at all.

The rooms are fine, but not outstanding for the price, slight damp and drain smell. The bed was very comfortable and housekeeping good.

Breakfast was of a very high quality, the Masala Dosa's very good - cooked by a VERY customer focused chef, he left a very good impression on us.

For evening meals we found it was more fun to eat at the beach shacks, for better food and a fraction of the price. We really enjoyed Pearls (separate review) next door.

The hotel pool is small for the size of the hotel, the snacks and service around the pool was poor the day we arrived. We waited 50 mins for spring rolls, we didn't use this facility again.

The staff were friendly at The Leela, but the guests don't tend to mix with each other. But having said that the clientele is quiet and low key, as you would expect from those who can afford it.

The Yoga facility could be improved, oil burners to dissuade mosquitoes being one recommendation. The hotel doesn't place very much value on this complimentary class.

What tainted our overall view was on our departure when arranging a local taxi, as we wished to continue our holiday further south in Goa. The concierge desk quoted £33 for the journey, when I was expecting it to be approx £10. When I queried this she was adamant that it was a long journey and this would be the rate I would be charged if I walked into the village to arrange the trip myself. I don't think this was honest. But I guess that if you can afford to pay £200 plus per night for a hotel room..... You can afford to pay £20 over the odds for a taxi journey. On principal I didn't like that.

Overall we wouldn't return, although it is a safe, easy, relaxed, 5 star resort and I can see why it is has been so popular for so long.

Located at the far end of South Goa, The Leela is a far from the crowds of North Goa. Its a beautiful resort with a semi private beach, two pools and acres of lawns and gardens.

The rooms are clean, spacious and extremely comfortable. Showers are good though the room I was in did not have a bath tub.

Breakfast is extensive and food taste and presentation is good. Overall quality of food at the resort is good and the staff is more than willing to oblige for any special requests.

The staff is polite and courteous. I checked out at 5am, the bellboy was at the room within 5 minutes of the call to collect the baggage and billing was a cakewalk, compared to some other hotels where it can take forever to check out at an odd hour.

The beach is very gradual, the waves mild. I walked in about 300 yards into the ocean with the water level just up to my waistline,

A great resort which I look to going back to.............soon.

Spent two nights here on a special just at the end of the rainy season. This meant the area was not busy at all and service was extremely good, but some features like the beach, golf course or pool were only of limited utility. We were offered an early check in, which was great given our 7am flight arrival and we even got a small birthday cake and a bottle of champagne.

The location is excellent, at the southern end of the long strip of beach that houses most Goa luxury resorts. The hotel is on a peninsula between the ocean and the river Sal where you can watch fishermen pull in their nets to rhythmic "bollywood" music.

The grounds are spacious and very pleasant. The stay included breakfast and dinner at the buffet restaurant, which was quite good for a buffet setting with cooking stations. It wasn't 5 star fine dining, but that also wasn't what we expected. The room overlooked the lagoon from a nice balcony and was newly renovated, super clean and well appointed. A windows allows enjoying the lagoon even from a bath tub.

There are not many "points for improvement". At some spots you can tell that the building have a few years under their belt. The humid climate does its part to let some more moss grow on the steps than you would think, but then that's why you came to India and not to the Sahara.

As is usual in these parts of the world, prices of hotel services are easily 10-50x local prices. For example, going into Margao town in a (nice) hotel car runs 1800 Rs, while a Tuktuk adventure is 220 Rs and the bus 25 Rs per person.

As other travellers have remarked, this property does not compare to "7 star" properties like the Leela Palace, Bangalore or the Rambagh Palace, Jaipur. Nevertheless it is a very nice property and the great service rounds off a very pleasant stay. I wish I had had more time to relax and enjoy it.

On arrival at the hotel the first thing that impresses you is the huge reception and lobby area. I would say it's around the size of a football pitch.

The hotel itself is stunning, we chose the Lagoon View room without balcony. It was a great room, with a stunning view across the Lagoon, the double doors open up and we did not feel the need to pay extra for the balcony option.

The resort has every feature you could want, three restaurants (indian, italian, and seafood). We are at the buffet every night and each night were impressed by the choices on offer (especially the large selection of vegetarian options).

The resort has a large pool, golf course, various activities for kids and adults, and a virtually private beach. The beach itself is beautiful, clean and very quiet. When we were on it there were no more than 30-40 people around at any one time on the private deck chairs.

This was an amazing resort and we had a great time there. I would definitely recommend it to anyone staying in Goa, it's about a 40 minute drive from the airport and close enough to visit the north of Goa

Room Tip: Lagoon View room was great
