“Nice resort with an amazing beach!”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

We stayed at the Dona Sylvia on our first time in Goa for the second week of our holiday in India. We had spent the first week on the Golden Triangle Tour and booked this hotel so we could have a rest at the end of our travels. The resort is good and has the amenities that you would want in an all inclusive resort. We emailed ahead of our visit and requested a first floor room with a large balcony and recommend you do this if the balcony size is important to you. On arrival we were very pleased with this as some of the balconies are quite small. The air con and rooms are fine and take the form of a traditional Goan style.
The food was ok and but we were more impressed with the food we had enjoyed in our first week of travelling than what was on offer at the hotel. The Mamma Mia poolside restaurant is the best for food.
The beach is amazing and you can walk for hours without many people being around so it feels like you have the place to yourself, which is particularly lovely at sunset.
Everyone we met was friendly and helpful - staff and other guests too - we were fortunate to make some lovely friends.
We booked a Jungle Book trip which was a fantastic part of our holiday. Staying in tents next to the elephants and going into the river on them as they gave us a power shower is a memory that will stay with us forever - a trip fully recommended to take part in!
This is a good base to stay in if you plan to visit Goa, my advice would be to combine this resort with other travel and days out. India has amazing sights to see and by staying by the pool for two weeks you are really missing out!

Room Tip: Ask for a first floor room with a large balcony. Email the hotel before you travel!

Nice resort with direct access to the beach. The hotel was very accommodating as we reached very early and left late. They let us stay in the room longer even though it was very close to Christmas. They actually gave us another room for our late check-out since ours was already booked. Lots of shops just outside the hotel. With our package we were also offered a dolphin chasing trip and a city tour. Dolphin trip was ok but the city tour was very long since the sights were quite a distance from the hotel. The downside was the saloon which offers hair and nail services. Very shabby and unprofessional. Other than that, everything else was great

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Donna Silva and want to give an honest opinion of our experience. Firstly we are aware that doing a review is subjective as we all have different expectations. We would like to add that we are well travelled and maybe all the things that we didn't like may not be such a problem to others. We booked this hotel based on the very positive reviews on Trip advisor and have come back wondering why?

Some of the problems we experienced are as follows

Swimming pool: Not enough umbrellas around the pool. The heat was intense and there were never enough brollies to keep out of the sun. There was the usual problem of people putting towels down early in the morning and pool boys being paid to do this for them which in my mind unacceptable especially as some of the beds and umbrellas were left empty all day and used only for a short while at the end of the day.

Food: We struggled badly with the food but if you like curry then you will love it. There was a salad bar but the boxes they had displayed it in looked dirty and old and there was no cold counter to keep it cool. The food was not always up to temperature which gives rise to a dodgy tummy. We were told on arrival that at least half of all guests get sick, perhaps the food needs to be avoided at this hotel or be choosy about what you eat. We became paranoid about eating in the end which spoilt our holiday. Breakfast time seemed too busy for staff to cope and people were standing around waiting for tables to be cleaned on numerous occasions.

Rooms: We had to change rooms on arrival as the one we were given was smelly! We were moved quite promptly into a first floor room which ok. It only had a small balcony with one chair so if you like sitting out ask for a ground floor room.

Service: Karen the Thomsons rep was very good being honest about trips and gave good advice about money exchange and local amenities. The hotel staff were a shambles, we picked up very quickly that they couldn’t make decisions on their own and when a problem arose they passed it to someone else to sort out which just caused confusion and never getting anything sorted promptly. This was across all areas in the hotel but in particular the reception and restaurant.

Local attractions: the beach was amazing and we always got a sunbed outside a shack even though the police have tidied up by only allowing 20 beds per shack. There were very few sellers on the beach as again this has been tightened up and I’m not sure this is of a benefit as we were told before coming to Goa that this was part of the attraction. Beware of the shop owners outside the hotel. They are very pushy about you going into their shops, be firm and say no and never maybe otherwise they see that as a promise and pester you even more. The only shop we liked was Meenas a lovely lady who has had a hard life but made good and not pushy! The highlight of our holiday was the rice boat trip. An overnight trip along the river with service second to none and the rooms on board were amazing.

All in all the holiday was a struggle and we found it difficult connecting with the holiday. We wouldn’t go back to Goa as there are far too many places in the world, don’t you think?

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a larger balcony as some have a small area with only room for one chair

My wife and I stayed at the Dona Sylvia Beach Resort from 17th March 2013 to 31th March 2013 and we had a great time. This was our first time to Goa and I am sure it will not be our last. The hotel is small in comparison to places we have stayed in the Caribbean but what it lacks in grandeur it more than makes up for in other ways.

The rooms are of a reasonable size, very clean and very comfortable. The bed was large, comfortable and had 4 huge fluffy pillows and was one of the best we have had anywhere. The clothes storage was limited but adequate. The bathroom was small but had a huge walk-in shower with plenty of hot water. The air conditioning was brilliant. One thing that I cannot believe has not been mentioned in any of the hundreds of reviews that I have read is that in India they do not have plugs in their sinks. We stayed at 5 different places and never saw a plug. Buy a flat universal plug from Wilkinsons/ B&Q for about a pound and take that. We got by with a deodorant top and some plastic.

Most food is served in The Seagull buffet restaurant and is mainly Indian food (as you would expect in India) and a few western dishes as well. In general the food was very good and the wine was surprisingly good for house wine. My best advice about the food is to go with an open mind. Just because you don’t like something at home does not mean you will like it cooked the Indian way. The Indians also do not eat with their eyes so whilst something might not look very appetising, it often tasted wonderful. All the food was hot and constantly replaced and the service was good. Twice a week the entire buffet is moved to the lawned area called the Haystack. Some previous reviewers seemed to have a problem with that but we found it was very enjoyable. The entertainment is also there on those nights and so gave it a cabaret atmosphere.

We also ate at both the A La Carte reataurants. The food and service here was excellent. Mamma Mia has an international ala carte menu and is situated by the pool in the open air serving snacks during the day. Kebabs and Kurries is an Indian air conditioned restaurant also by the pool. As we are new to Indian food we choose from the brief description of each dish. The food was absolutely superb, as was the service. We heard that the Hotel management do not understand why the a la cartes are not very busy ( only 4 of us in the Indian). I think it is because the menus are not displayed anywhere. We actually went in when they were open and asked to look at the menus. If they were displayed outside during the day and also in the lobby, I’m sure they would be much busier.

There are 2 bars. The pool bar is open 11-6 and the bar above the lobby is open 6-11. All beers are premium brands and come in bottles so no chance of watering down like some places. Spirits are local brands but you would struggle to tell the difference.

We did 5 excursions with Thomsons. The highlight was Jungle Book, an overnight stay in an elephant camp including going in the river with them for a power shower. It was great fun and the food was excellent. Also worth a mention is Tusks, Tigers and Temples (2 nights away). It was a lot of travelling including 5 hours each way on a train, an experience in itself, but well worth it. I particularly enjoyed the Temple. You see the evening ceremony which has a carnival atmosphere and you actually get in amongst it rather than just observing from a distance.

The Thomson rep was Karen. As previous reviewers have said she was extremely good. Even though she must deal with hundreds of people on a daily basis, every time we saw her she knew where we had been and where we was going and was keen to get our feedback. She was very friendly and great fun. She even kissed us goodbye at the airport. She has loads of local knowledge and was full of useful hints and tips. She is a real asset to Thomsons.

To sum up, Goa is a fantastic place to go on holiday. It’s so much more than the usual beach holiday destination. The Dona Sylvia Beach Resort is an excellent place to stay with good clean accommodation, good food and drink and friendly helpful staff. You cannot ask for much more. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone and am sure we will return one day.

Room Tip: Upstairs with a big balcony are brighter. Downstairs are cooler.

Just arrived back from our first trip to the Dona Sylvia, on our arrival we were to early to be allocated our rooms but were offered a refreshing drink in comfortable surroundings until the rooms were ready, our rooms which were both spacious and clean with views over the attractive well maintained gardens. The hotel has it's own private pathway down to the beach shaded by coconut palms with a refreshing fresh coconut stall on the way down.
Food was of a good standard with plenty to choose from to cater for all tastes I really don't understand why people choose to eat out in local restaurants as the food is both varied and very tasty the waiters/chef's cannot do enough to please and will endeavour to cook/provide most meals to suite ones pallet. The pool area again was both clean and well maintained with adequate sun loungers/seating space a truly refreshing experience after a hard day on the beach. The evening entertainment again was adequate with a local band playing every night adding to the lovely relaxed evening atmosphere and the bar staff were very keen to make your cocktails to suit however the all inclusive drinks were limited local brands unless you wanted to pay extra but to be honest they were just as good in my opinion.
Overall the staff were very friendly, efficient well presented and genuinely seemed to be enjoying there work and loved to engaging with the clients and go out of their way to please. We have just booked to return to the Dona Sylvia again next year arriving on the 6/4/14 and can't count the days of quick enough to relive this wonderful experience that the Dona Sylvia has to offer.
Thankyou again to all the staff.........Kevin, Elaine, Danny G and Ellis x
