“Sun Moon and 5 Cretan Stars”
Reviewed August 26, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We had a wonderful holiday staying at Villa Selene. It was a special celebration for us this year which is why we decided to take the whole family with us - two children a son in law and two granddaughters. The villa proved to be perfect for our requirements - being a bungalow there were no stairs for the little one to deal with and the layout of the rooms meant we were very comfortably accommodated. The overhead ceiling fans combined with a light touch on the aircon made the nights very comfortable despite one or two days touching 40 Celsius. We did appreciate that after some very torrid nights in August in previous years in Crete where we had only a small desk fan. The property was well furnished and the beds pronounced comfortable by all.
The villa was well equipped for self catering and we made good use of the barbecue too.
As one of the owners was in residence at the same time as us we also had the benefit of his advice and help - additionally the villa and pool cleaning team did good service as advertised.
We much appreciated having the private pool to use - and the design with the steps at one end meant our 18 month old granddaughter was able to play in the shallows so to speak. There is a most magnificent view of the White Mountains and the glorious sunsets from the balcony and at night the stars and the Moon put on a fabulous show.
As well as the satellite TV and DVD there is now a wifi set up which was well used by us - (useful tip - bring an HDMI lead to connect your latop to the TV). Although I feel it might be better to spend time off the net while on holiday these days it seems we all have to have some connectivity. Certainly the younger generation found it most useful.
The villa is within easy reach of the quiet family resort of Almyrida which has a good choice of restaurants and above all a safe and sandy beach suitable for small people. With a hire car there are many good sightseeing trips - across the mountains to Sfakia, to the water park Limnoupoulis, a visit to Chania old town or a favourite of ours - Sunday lunch with traditional roast lamb at Argiroupouli.

All in all it made for lovely holiday staying in a very peaceful location but with plenty of things to do. We felt we had made a very good choice and everyone had a fantastic time

Management Response
Aug 27, 2014
We love the title of this review and we really feel the reviewer has captured all the best aspects of a stay at the villa. One quick clarification in relation to the owner being in residence. We have a separate villa on the olive grove in which we occasionally stay in summer but usually only use in off season months when we are over for olive picking and maintaining and spring cleaning the other villas.

“Lovely villa, great location”
Reviewed July 27, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Spent two weeks in June in Villa Selene in Alymrida, Crete. The villa was spick & span on arrival, fully kitted out and was exactly as described. The pool was a really good size and was cleaned regularly while we were there. Particularly appreciated the fresh towels and bed linens every 3 to 4 days. The extra little touches do make a difference, such as fans in every room, which means you don't always have to run the air conditioning if it doesn't suit (my husband has a real aversion to air-con!). The location of the villa was perfect for exploring - not just the local villages of Amlyrida and Gavalorchi but also Souda Bay and my personal favourite - Chania town. The old town is just beautiful and just big enough for a couple of hours exploring and shopping...and of course there are lovely cafes, and restaurants all along the harbour front. The weather was fantastic for the whole 2 weeks, and all in all a fabulous holiday - Thank you John!

“Great villa in a quiet location but not far from local facilities”

We've just spent 2 weeks at Villa Selene and had a great time. We were a party of 4 adults and 4 teenagers (15/16) and found the accommodation had plenty of room for us in the 4 bedrooms, lounge/kitchen, bathroom and shower room.

The villa and pool are well maintained and when we had a minor problem with one of the bedroom door locks, we called Mark and he was there within 15 minutes to sort it out.

We took taxis from Chania airport to the villa which cost €50 for the 45 minute drive which was well worth it as it was dark and we were unfamiliar with the area. However it was easy to find from the supplied directions. We had hire cars delivered to the villa the next day from Auto Club in Almyrida. There was no charge for delivery and they requested that we drop into the office to pay when we were passing. Excellent service.

The nearest village of Gavalochori is around a 15 minute walk and has a couple of excellent picturesque tavernas which are inexpensive and there is Wi-Fi available. There is also a bakery and a small mini market in the village.

The town of Almyrida is a 30 minute walk down the hill. We didn’t attempt the walk back as it was too steep and hot. The local taxi company (Taxi Almyrida +30 6974 640905) charged €9 for the trip back. We returned to the villa by 1 am but apparently the bars in Almyrida are open until 5 am and taxis are available 24/7.

Almyrida has lots of good tavernas. The average cost of a meal with drinks was less than €15 a head although you could probably spend less. They all seem to have free Wi-Fi which kept the kids (and me) happy. A few of them show Premiership football live – we watched a couple of games in Sirocco bar.

We spent a lot of time by the excellent pool at the villa but there are a couple of small beaches in Almyrida with pedalos and kayaks for rent. The long beach at Georgioupoli was also good and Lake Kourma is worth a visit for the tavernas, scenery, boat hire and beach. The old town areas of Chania and Rethimnon are also worth a visit for harbour side restaurants and narrow streets crammed full of shops.
