“Good, solid hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2014 via mobile

Have just completed a 2 week stay here, plenty of choice for food and drink, staff are super friendly to the point of being over helpful - which is no bad thing. Down side....beach (beach boys), although the hotel has no control over this, repetition of food stuffs, not being in central location to go out and about independently and local taxis are very expensive and pool staff being bit annoying about us beds. Would stay there again though.

This is a pleasant all inclusive resort, the rooms are good the staff are pleasant, although service can be slow. The entertainments team try hard and there are plenty of activities if you want to join in but no one tries to force you. Local spirits, wine beer are included as is all tea coffee soft drinks and water. Local booze is not wonderful but is drinkable. Food is ok but is very repetitive and uninspired. The beach has the same problem as all beaches in Kenya, it is infested with people trying to sell you things, most of them won't take no for an answer unless you are both forceful and rude. The beach problem is not the fault of the hotel and their security will help if they see you having a problem. A pleasant stay if not very inspiring. Having said that I would possibly stay there again

Great place, great staff and fantastic food. Great diving and great safari (trip for 3 days booked in the uk before we went). The only criticism (for us) is that you can't really walk anywhere except along the beach and then you have to "fend off" the beach boys. Swimming in the sea is great but best at high ish tide as coral and other stuff exposed a little at low tide. Can still swim but you have to pick your entry point. I swam to the reef about 1KM away but this would only really be viable for strong swimmers. Can get boats out to the sandbar though.

Room Tip: Normal rooms are great - amongst the trees. Superior rooms have sea view and Jacuzzi I believe but I...

The Baobab on the whole was excellent,we ate in the Maridadi restaurant most of the time and the staff were brilliant cheerful ,smiling and willing to get you anything you wanted ,food was supurb and you had to be a very fussy eater not to find something to enjoy, again the Bar by the Maridadi was brilliant staff had a brilliant sense of humour and made the most amazing pinklady cocktails of which i had a few.
The room we had was well equipped kept immaculately clean by Linette,my only fault on this was i have walking problems due to arthritis and did email the htel twice to request a room by pool, bar, and restaurant that was quiet and our room was slap bang in the middle of two of the pools and restaurants and we had the ampi thearta right behind us,i should have realised nothing was going to happen when the reply to my emails came back one sentence YOUR REQESTED HAS BEEN NOTED as i said the room we had in normal curcumstances would have been brilliant but as the days went on i did find the walk back to room painful and had we been placed nearer the Maridadi area it would have made my holiday a lot easier.I did go to reception once to firstly tell them the problem and also being our first time there to ask for a map of the complex but the reply was OH dear and no we dont have maps but we do have a walking tour of the hotel each day my husband said but we have just told you my wife has walking problems, and she just smiled and said its not that far,at which point we left, also we only found out 2 days before we came home that they has softer mattresses i actually slept in the chair a couple of nights.
The only other minus thing was i celebrated my 60th birthday at the hotel and as the hotel made it clear by sending us the price list of things we could order my husband as a surprise to me ordered flowers and cake to be delivered to our room for 12 noon the flowers duly arrived so by 1pm we went back to bar ,on our return at 3pm still no cake so my husband rang to ask where it was oh did you order cake as well was the reply,an hour later it appeared with a very bad carving of a zebra as a sorry, did put a dampner on my birthday,So all in all if the behind the scenes ran their operation as well as the room cleaners, bar staff and restaurant staff this would have been the most amazing birthday it just seemed to lack the personal care that on my 8 trips to kenya in the past have had

Have just returned from a spell at the Boabab, to put it very simply, it was wonderful! The Staff were all fabulous and the hotel, while being large, is cared for very well. The food was very good, with it being all inclusive, there was always something to tempt. It was freshly cooked and very tasty.
All members of staff, from security, to bar, to housekeeping to garden and pool, work very hard together to keep many guests happy and I salute them. They are a credit to the hotel. Our room was comfortable, and was within monkey central. Very amusing to sit out, in the late afternoon and have a drink outside your room and watch them. Would strongly advise you not to eat outside your room as the Sykes Monkeys are very naughty and not scared of trying to get at it.

We stayed in a Mari dadi superior room for 6 nights after just over a week on safari.

The Mari dadi end was definitely the quietest end of the resort and was just what we were after to relax. If you want games or aquarobics then maybe the other pools would be better.

The room had a sea view over pool, and was large and well appointed. A couple of issues though - curtains don't reach floor and as the room was east facing it got quite light in morning - we counteracted this by putting spare pillows and blankets along the bottom of the window so we could have a lie in. Bed sheets were also a bit old and bobbly. Large balcony with seats and double sun lounger. Large and nicely done bathroom with double sinks, and huge shower. Some info in the room pack differs from that around hotel, tv channel list wrong and poor picture quality but a nice tv capable of better. Top-tip - they key to go in slot to activate power is just a key ring, so can be left behind in room to make sure you've got a nice cool room to come back to. Plenty of power sockets.

When we checked out we had to leave our room for the week but we were given a main block room to shower and change before we got picked up to go to the airport. This room was much smaller than ours had been and not nearly as nice. It re-assured us that the upgrade had been worthwhile.

Wifi from 4euros an hour, 12 hour voucher only lasts 72 hours so not ideal, with an all inclusive resort you'd think this sort of thing would be included. Now one of my biggest gripes, the size of the beer, tiny! only about 200ml. Generally ordered two at a time depending on if the barman would let you. The all-inclusive wine was from a carton and tasted like you'd expect! We were also given fruit garnishes with cocktails which meant we were chased by monkeys until they snatched the fruit or we took the empty glasses back to the bar. There were guards who would chase the monkeys away but there weren't enough of them to be effective.

Second biggest gripe was the pool towel system, you're not trusted with a towel, have to give in a card which you then get back when you return the towel at the end of the day or you get a 2000ksh fine (apparently the cost of a towel, but hard to believe as they weren't exactly luxury), this also means that towels on sunbeds aren't collected if left abandoned or to reserve sunbeds. Sun loungers at pool hard to set to different heights too, when you sit up it pops out of where you just set it!

Dinner options at the main buffet restaurants were poor, roasted goat overdone, no meat on beef ribs, sponge cakes all dry, slow drinks service, basically have to order next one when one arrives. No cocktails at table. Have to wear shoes not flip flops in restaurant but all the cats that seem to plague the place don't have to. Fresh pancake station at breakfast was ok, but no maple syrup, not even 2% imitation stuff.

One evening we ate at the a la carte Italian restaurant. This was pretty good but fairly expensive, portion sizes were good too. We also ate out one evening at the cave restaurant nearby which was excellent and they provide a complimentary taxi service too.

As for activities we did the archery session one day which was fine for beginners, equipment was pretty good. We also did a couple of dives at about £100 per person for 2 dives on one boat trip which is fairly steep I think. Visibility was less than 10m so not ideal, but we did see two turtles and the usual array of tropical fish. Beach is nice, but as others have covered you can't really get any peace once you leave the hotel perimeter.

Overall I would happily go back to Kenya for another safari, but I would probably go elsewhere to relax on the beach afterwards. 3/4 seems a bit harsh, but 4 would be too much in my opinion.

Just returned this week from two weeks at the Diani Baobab Beach Resort & Spa. I had booked this holiday as a present for my partners 50th birthday and therefore had upgraded the flight and the room. We flew with Thomson Dreamliner in Premium. A very comfortable flight, although the TV screen storage inbetween the seats makes it uncomfortable to get out of your seat past others. Apparently this has already been fed back to the airline and they are changing the seats. MOI airport was easy to get through (having completed about three forms each on the flight for visa requirements) and we boarded our coach for the transfer.
Please Note: The transfer can be a nightmare due to the ferry crossing. Our transfer took approx 2 and a half hours!
On arrival, we were taken to the Amphitheatre and before we knew it, we had our key and were being shown to our deluxe room in the Kole Kole section of the hotel. WOW. It was absolutely great. Like a mini apartment. Double shower, his and her sinks, four poster bed, lounge area, writing desk and then a day bed and chairs and table on the balcony. Lovely and clean with tea & coffee making facility and hairdryer. (even hangers in the wardrobes!).
A lovely touch was a note on the bed wishing my partner a happy birthday from the general manager of the hotel.
and so the wonderful service, food and people began. The all inclusive food offered varying options: Pasta station, beef, lamb, pork, chicken, rice, potatoes, salad, soups, beef & tuna carpaccio...... the best all inclusive food we have had. The staff were exceptional in service. We ate at all three restaurants and found that the Maridadi was a bit quieter than the others, but our restuarant at the Kole Kole saw us looked after by Silas and Mary in particular.
Breakfast in itself catered for everyone - english breakfast, continental, egg station, waffles, marmalade and jams.....
A particularly nice touch was the General Manager invited you to participate in cocktails on the Friday of the first week and explained that if anyone had a problem we should speak up and enable the staff to fix it and that he wanted everyone to have a wonderful experience when staying at his hotel. Again at the end of our holiday we were invited for cocktails and "bitings" (nibbles), where the General Manager (Sylvester) and his managers came and spoke to everyone to gain their feedback on their stay at the hotel. Very impressive.

Safari: TIP - book your safari separate to your hotel & flight package. Then you do not have to check out - go on safari and come back to check in again. You can just leave your room, put your valuables in the safe and return. We booked with Diani Safari Tours. We had a van to ourselves, a very knowledgable driver and managed to see the big 4 and more (you wont see Rhino at Tsavo East as they are not there). We had a fantastic room at Ashnil Aruba Lodge, where again, the food and service were great and the grounds were very pretty. Hippos sat in the watering hole visible from the pool and Zebras came to drink there in the evening.

Back at the hotel, the monkeys provided great entertainment, but you do need to keep the glass doors closed when you are not out on the balcony! We left the mosquito doors shut only and the monkey pulled out the netting at the base of the door and got in to pinch the sugar! whilst we were in!
The beach is fine if you are strong enough to say no. A lot of the guys down there want to do something for you to earn a bit of money. We had keyrings made and had a couple of the guys give us a tour of the sealife (when the tide was right out), which was amazing - star fish, urchins, puffer fish, coral... You MUST wear shoes if you walk beyond the sand as there are hundreds of Urchins! (Watch out for a guy that calls himself Alexander The Great - he is a glorified begger and needs to be told NO quite firmly).

All staff at the hotel want you to have a fantastic experience, from the security guards, to the groundsmen, pool guys, etc. We did not tip until the end of the holiday as we like to know who provides genuine top service, but some were tipping as they went.
A good mixture of guests - Italian, English, Polish, German...

The most fantastic experience all round. Top marks for every aspect of the holiday. We will be returning a.s.a.p.

Room Tip: Maridadi rooms are to be chosen if you want complete peace. No daytime activities around this pool...
