Southern Palms Beach Resort
Ranked #13 of 29 Hotels in Diani Beach
Reviewed September 25, 2012

We stayed in Southern Palms for 4 days before our safari and 3 days after it. It is a very good hotel, staff are very friendly - in fact they really make the hotel! - the situation of the hotel is perfect - on a white beach with palm trees and blue/green sea. The food is of a high standard with a choice of restaurants. There is a Lebanese, Italian and a BBQ grill as well as the hotel main restaurant which had a different theme each evening. We tried them all (except Italian) and they were all first class.
The rooms are kept really clean - the only slight downside is that they are a bit 'tired' and could do with refurbishment.
The pools are excellent and there are plentiful sun loungers. We spent most of our time on the beach which is gorgeous and is patrolled by the hotel's security staff. They are very friendly and introduced themselves to the guests. They were worth their weight in gold as their very presence kept the 'beach boys' at bay. The beach boys are also extremely friendly but they are trying to make a living by selling souvenirs and will approach you if you leave the 'safety' of the loungers to go dip your toes in the gorgeous Indian Ocean. We bought some stuff from them and they then left us alone for the rest of our holiday. They just waved and shouted hello! Before you buy get an idea of the price of souvenirs from the hotel shop (same items on sale) so you can haggle. They also are very grateful for pens, notebooks and socks, so if you take some with you they will be lifelong friends!!!
All in all we had an excellent holiday and the hotel met all of our expectations.

Room Tip: Our first room was opposite the bar where the evening entertainment was - too noisy! A room closer t...

This is an ok hotel - staff is extremely friendly and food is great. pool is welcoming and activities are quite fun. The beachfront is one of the nicer ones in the coast area. Only downside is the rooms are old and some of the functionalities need to be revived. when i go there the AC, phone and hot water had to be jumpstarted, though jumpstarted they were due to responsive staff. The hotel is a million times better than leisure lodge which is old and rusty, but still has to compete with Diani Reef and Indian Ocean Hotel. All these hotels need serious renovation though. The best hotel in Diani, in its class these days is Swahili Beach Hotel

Room Tip: oceanfront is expensive but rooms 1/2/346-348 are the next best to ocean front without the charges

This was my husband and my second visit to this hotel, we had emailed them in advanced to let them know we were coming to redo our honeymoon, as the previous years one had been a bad experience, at another hotel. When we got there they had put up a welcome notice for us, all staff were so friendly and welcoming. We had a romantic meal on the beach one evening, and once the meal had finished some staff came down singing, and gave us a celebrationary cake which was lovely. Some of the waiting staff remembered us from last year. Nothing was too much trouble, and they went out of their way to make you feel special, comfortable, and welcomed. In particular the head of the resturant, and our favourite waiter "Gideon Havithu, who became not only our personal Swahili teache but now he is our friend. I would highly recommend this hotel to any anyone wanting to go to Diani Beach.

In July 2012 we travelled to Southern Palms with family with 3 daughters aged 11, 15 & 18. Southern Palms exceeded our expectations. The 2 large swimming pools are the focal point of the hotel nestled in spectacular grounds, extremely well maintained. The rooms are a little tired in decor but very kept clean by the staff. The hospitality and friendliest of the staff was a key part to the enjoyment of our stay at Southern Palms, especially in the main buffet area, the food during our stay was of a high standard and varied to suit all of our tastes. Our daughter turned 18 during our stay and in the main restaurant she was surprised with fresh flowers decorating her table and chair from breakfast until the evening and a birthday cake together with a typically Kenyan serenade of 'Happy Birthday' by the kitchen and buffet staff made the day memorable for all the family.

We loved you Southern Palms and would definitely return again.

We stayed half board and booked our Safari before we left the UK through Julius T Safaris, a local company we had used before and cannot recommend enough.

We spent 5 days here during the first part of our 10 day holiday in Kenya. Upon entering the gates my husband said "Welcome to Jurassic Park" had it exactly that sort of feel, especially with the security. However, inside was amazing, we were met with cool towels and a coconut to drink. A truly beautiful place where the staff are really helpful and friendly, everyone saying "Jambo" each time you see them. Our room was beautiful, with the room service coming in each day to make the bed and then again to turn it down at night and closing the mosquito nets. The choice of restaurants in which we could eat was really good, and there was plenty of choice of different foods. If I had to find one fault it would be that the entertainment (which was outdoors) was very loud, going on until 11pm, which wasn't very good if you wanted to go to bed early.

In may 2012, I took a friend of mine from Erope to show him some kenyan hospitality and I choose Southern Palms because of its beuty and recomendations.

Well to begin with we were given a very poor reception on arrival, the bell boys were busy entertaining the white tuarist and we were left on our own and we were the last to be checked in.
Secondly they started speaking to my friend in Kiswahili because he is light skinned and they just assumed that he was from Mombasa...
For the next seven days, we were totally blocked off, we had to greet the waiters, while they rushed to welcome the white tuarist with a big grin on their faces and a big "JAMBO" coming out of their mouths.

Another sad thing is, there were two black elderly ladies staying at the hotel, I assume they were from up country, they were totally ignored especially by the waiters, the poor ladies had a little understanding of the western meals, no waiter bothered to assist them, and at one point we had to help them.

My advice to the management team is to promote local tuarism and also give good services for all..irrespective of their background, gender and race.

Finally I want to give thanks to the boy at the poolbar, the animation team , the light skinned gardener who brought me fresh flowers for my room and the student trainee waiters, they were lovely and they showered true kenyan spirit and hospitality.

Room Tip: The hotel is beutifully designed, almost all room are facing the indian ocean, during my stay the ro...
