Reviewed August 30, 2013

Hopefully this review will be able to balance both the positives and negatives of our experience however, the headline and rating depict our recent stay.

Upon arriving at the hotel, the welcome was most friendly...a refreshing towel and fruit juice to assist with erasing the journey from the airport via the chaotic ferry. Check-in was efficient, informative and completed with the ever present smile, we came to find from many of the staff.

Accommodation: -

Unfortunately, this is where the issues started to stack up. Opening the door of our first allocated room was not what we expected, the room was tired, the tiles and grout a little grubby and the bathroom mirror was virtually unable to provide any reflection, due to its scratched and peeling reflective coating. The curtains and bed sheets are of poor quality and the rattan/wicker furniture had well passed its 'use-by' date. The biggest issue was the patio doors, as even though they seem locked, they are poorly fitted and can be simply lifted from their tracks and entry easily gained. Should a key be provided, rather than just the sliding lock, it would have given more piece of mind...and I'm sure many other hotel staff and locals, also know this too!

Returning to a positive, we pointed this out to reception, who offered a further two rooms for our consideration, which we readily accepted, with one being also a ground floor unit. This room was in a better state of repair, cleaner and felt slightly fresher than the previous one. Whilst travelling with a baby, the ground floor providing easier access for a stroller was our better option, although the balcony doors remained easy to access, even when seemingly locked with the sliding lock mechanism. Calling reception and the maintenance team again to show them first-hand, only provided a recognition that they were aware of the matter and accepted this is an outstanding issue on many of the accommodation units - simply not good enough for a proclaimed 5-star establishment.

Our request to insert wooden blocks on each side of the doors to prevent outside access, was covered by the maintenance guys the next day - although I gained access to a further 7 units, by the same method, as we were also travelling with many other family members as part of a larger wedding contingent. As mentioned previously, this security issue could have been negated by providing a key to the doors instead, from the out-set.

The curtain tracks fell down regularly on the left hand side, as the economical holding clips were aged and needed replacing.

Air conditioning worked as it should, albeit quite noisy and kept surging throughout the night.

Whilst our shower provided good pressure and hot water, many other family guests were complaining about the lack of hot water and reduced pressure...mainly from the upstairs rooms. This is not due to the management proclaiming to have Eco showers - it is down to the poor maintenance and absence of water pumps in the ageing rooms.

House Keeping: -

The room was made up daily, with fresh flowers adorning the bed or the mirror, as a little fragrant gesture. We did find the cover on the double sofa removed for two days, leaving just the stained bare seat cushion for 'comfort'. When asking the chambermaid where it had gone, she stated it had been put to wash. Totally flummoxed to why there was not a replacement, she produced it still wet and offered to put it back on, there and then??? Obviously, we requested a dry one be available, which came later the same day.

The bed was elderly and well used, underneath the cheap coverings, with a soiled and worn mattresses, with seams pulling apart and creaky springs, whilst the pillows are firm. The baby cot mattress and bumper was clean and had an additional mosquito net, although two wheels were broken giving it an uneven balance.

Only shower option available in the standard rooms, with reasonable quality shampoo, body wash and moisturiser. which were pleasantly provided.

Towels were changed (even if not needed to) and fresh ones not arriving until the early evening, leaving us to call reception and request delivery of them on a couple of occasions, to ensure we all showered for an early dinner.

Main Restaurant: -

This new environment is a constant reminder of the opposing sides of this hotel, as this was a complete recent rebuild, after last years fire damage. It is clean and fresh, just what you would expect from a premium hotel, with the food being of a suitable standard at breakfast and dinner. Lunch resembled much of the hot offerings of the previous evenings fare, with the addition of fresh bread, fruits and cold meats. The staff are ever friendly and constantly smiling throughout, although on many occasions showed their lack of training and experience, when arriving to provide the morning tea/coffee and finding no cups to pour the hot drinks in to. A notable exception to this is George (aka - The Government, due to his very upright stance), who was the most diligent and efficient, restaurant staff member available.

The inquisitive monkeys regularly frequent the furthest tables of the restaurant and opportunistically steal any available food or sugar sachets they can get their hands on - along with any of your personal effects too, if you're unfortunately not keeping them very close. Several of the staff mentioned the problems with them and often called the pest control, who keep them at bay with a sling-shot.

A word of caution if travelling with babies, infants or if you have specific dietary needs - as with other reviews on here, double check everything, to ensure it has been completely understood and delivered at the time you require. We frequently found ourselves waiting on pureed food, ordered much earlier in the day and finding the time had been written down or communicated wrongly to the kitchen staff, as they had heavily salted the baby food, even after requesting salt be omitted from the requested dishes...and even a Puri (Indian fried bread) and not pureed food on one occasion.

We were on a full board basis however, no water is included at dinner and you have to order this as an irritating extra cost, each time - as per many other items from the beach and pool bars are not included in this full board fare basis.

Our patience was finally tested after waiting for our pre-ordered baby food, arrived over 45 minutes late and resorted to speaking with the on-site General Manager. He noted all points mentioned and stated that this would be passed on to the Hotel Directors for security and maintenance actions to be addressed.

By way of compensation, an 'A La Carte' meal was provided free to the room, whilst we calmed our little one and sparred the other diners any disruption from a hungry and upset meltdown.

Pool: -

Very clean and well maintained, with a variety of shallower areas for small children and relaxation.

Beach: -

Clean and easy to access the water at low tide however, swimming at high tide is not recommended due to a high swell. Much to see and the locals are ever eager to press their crafts, sarongs, kikoys and other items. Many other establishments can be accessed by a stroll along the beach, which offer a variety of differing menu options and sometimes entertainment too.

Other: -

Spa and Gym - we did not experience this first hand, although heard good reports of the massage and facilities from the extended family.

Baby Sitting service - used this option twice, with Mapenzi from the Kids Club available to look after our little one whilst we attended the wedding reception. Very knowledgable, friendly and not an expensive extra - recommended, if you are considering this service.

Out & About - recommend the trip to Wasini on the Pilli Pipa Dhow booked through the hotel representative, with great snorkelling, Dolphins and lunch, all contributing to a memorable day.

Nakumatt Store - essential extras only a short stroll away

Overall: -

Leopard Beach Resort is situated in a stunning location on Diani Beach, although it is certainly not the 5-star resort, which you would expect to find. The grounds are well kept, whilst the restaurant, pool and beach outlets provide an acceptable service of a globally standard 3-star resort. However, the ageing fixtures, fittings and maintenance of the rooms let this down to a less than 3-star standard.

My suggestion to the management, would be to invest in upgrading the rooms, rather than building the further chalet units, which strangely, are next to the busy entrance and main road???

Room Tip: Go for upstairs rooms for added security

Dear Mr. Bryan,

We thank you for staying with us and for your efforts to highlight the many positive aspects of Leopard Beach Resort & Spa, which resonate with the numerous compliments our team received from the other 105 wedding guests.

It is truly regrettable that you only chose to share with us the points you planned to publish on Trip Advisor shortly prior to being asked to pay for your extras, rather than during your stay. Had you done so, the management team (who were readily available throughout your stay) would have made every effort to ensure you were satisfied with your stay.

As you mentioned your wife has worked with leading hotels in the UK, I would certainly have liked to meet with you both. A friendly talk between professionals would have given me the opportunity to explain certain differences and come to an amicable resolution. While we do not at all mind being compared with our competitors in Kenya, in relation to other countries we do ask you to bear in mind what you paid for your stay with us in comparison.

We would hereby like to very clearly state that that we do not claim to be a 5 star luxury resort, which would find itself in a considerable higher price category. Rather, we are branded as 4-star by over 40 contracted leading tour operators whose expert opinion we trust.

We note that you are security conscious and are therefore baffled that would recommend walking to the nearest supermarket along a busy road without sidewalks or street lighting. This to us is far more of a safety issue than sliding doors for hotel rooms equipped with safes and located in well-secured hotel grounds staffed by a team of trusted employees.

Surely it would add to the pleasure of any holiday to spend these all important days in style, relaxing on one of the most beautiful beaches with an exquisite cocktails in hand enjoying splendid views and great gardens rather than in a supermarket because the resort does not provide free mineral water with your meals?

We are not and do not intend to ever be an all-inclusive resort. There is a significant difference between this and ‘full board’ - one of the various packages we offer our guests. This option includes three daily meals in the main restaurant but leaves the guests with the opportunity to select from a wide range of high-quality beverages to their liking. As we do have a number of other tempting restaurants, we would recommend guests who would like a little extra flexibility to book with us on half-board basis.

We would like to take this opportunity to respond to some of your comments on the fittings and furnishings of your room. Our mirrors do indeed need replacing. When they were fitted 2 years ago they were sold to us as suited for the tropics – unfortunately this is not the case and replacements are on the way from the UK. However our original rattan furniture from Bali is not worn out; we can confidently state that nothing in our rooms is more than 5 years old. Our air conditioning and water pipe systems were renovated 2 years ago. All of our fittings are to highest international standards imported at great costs from Europe. We do apologize for the problem you encountered with our curtain rails; these are neither old or of inferior quality as we are known not to take short cuts – something recognized by the fact that we have been repeatedly votes as best Beach Resort in Kenya- East Africa.

Language barriers sometimes do result in misunderstandings with our lovely local staff - however, we sincerely apologize for the negative experiences in our restaurant.
Finally with reference to your remark on our chalets which are 02 and 03 bed roomed villas each with its own swimming pool for the more discerned traveler who seeks privacy with the security and services of a resort and will have its own ala carte restaurant and bar as we strive to constantly improve our facilities.
Once again, thank you for the many positive comments about our resort.

Kind regards
The Managing Director and his Chui Team

I stayed at Leopard Beach Resort with my 22 month old son and 4 year old daughter. It was just my kids and I, as my husband couldn't make it due to work commitments. I must say, having stayed at a few resorts both in North and South coast, this so far has been the best. The location is incredible!!!!! It doesn't get any better than having a sea facing room, but if you unable to, for whatever reason, the beautiful, lush tropical gardens make up for it. The are teeming with mischievous Vervet Monkeys and my children were endlessly entertained by them. If you're lucky you will also spot the beautiful Colobus monkeys high up ahead as you walk on the path below. We stayed in one of the incredible Chui Cottages, which come with their very own private garden overlooking the beach and the ocean. AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. I couldn't get enough of the view! The bathrooms are really luxurious. My children loved the twin showers and gigantic bath tubs!!!!
The pool is brilliant as it caters for all, having 3 different depths. My son had great fun splashing about in the toddler pool and my daughter tested her swimming abilities in both the other sections. What I loved most about LBR is the easy accessibility to the beach and the variety of sitting and lounging places all over the resort. The beach is clean and secure, with friendly, uniformed guards ensuring you are not unduly harassed by the hawkers. I felt very safe and let my kids run up and down the beach freely. The animation club is a great asset. Mapenzi runs it with an assistant. They try very hard, but although the club house itself is very charming, I think it is on the small side and activities could be a little more inventive and fun. Having said that, it was nice to leave my 2 with Mapenzi for an hour or so. She was excellent with both kids and my daughter grew fond of her very quickly.
Another great aspect of LBR is the variety of restaurants. We sampled food at each restaurant, except the Chui Grill, as that is what I like to call Calm and Relaxed Dining (ie: no running, crying, screaming children). There is the option of a baby sitter and Mapenzi can be booked to sit for the kids, but I prefer to spend evenings with my children and the prospect of dining alone didn't appeal!! The menu did look enticing though. If you are a seafood lover, it looks worth a try.
The service team are always willing to serve and please. I have no complaints about their abilities. They are prompt and efficient and friendly. A few of the service staff even addressed my children by their names throughout our stay, which the children loved. Julius was particularly fantastic and so was Peter, one of the grounds security guards. Our house keeper Petrus (?????) was a life saver a few times!!! My children loved the Pizzeria and its proximity to the sea was fab, especially at night. You can also have your lunch on the beach at the Coco Restaurant.
My only criticism is the quality of the breakfast buffet. Breakfast is an important meal for my family and we found (yes, my 4 year old daughter commented) that it wasn't up to scratch. It can be more varied. Would be nice to have more on offer and displayed in a more inviting lay out.
All in all, a beautiful resort. Cannot thank Chris M enough for going out of his way to ensure our comfort and Winnie and Salome for their professionalism.
Highly recommended and will definitely be returning. I understand they are building villas right next to the hotel for family stays :)

Room Tip: If you are holidaying with your family, book a Chui Cottage

Dear Diana,

Thank you for a great review.
We note you have stayed in a couple of hotels both in North and South Coast and we are pleased to note you loved our Resort most. While a few people do not appreciate nature and what it has to offer; we are happy that your children were endlessly entertained by the mischievous monkeys that highly compliment our environment in many ways. They remain harmless unless fed or provoked and they are fun to watch. We have a continuous property management programme to ensure our gardens are well taken care of as well as the rooms and we are pleased that you found this evident in the overall ambience of the Resort.

You sampled most of our restaurants and enjoyed the food and the ambience. We have however noted with concern your opinion on our breakfast and we are committed to ensure guest feedback is taken into great consideration. Just to mention that fruits are seasonal and Mangoes for example currently out of season . However, our Breakfast menu changes daily but is also not one to be compared with five star hotels in Nairobi or other establishments which charge much higher rates. We invite you to please write to us and give us specific details on what you would like to see improved on our breakfast buffet. We are very pleased by your feedback on the Little Leopards Club and shared your compliments to Mapenzi and Domtilla. The room opens up to the well manicured and secure grounds where children have some outdoor activities and this is meant to compliment the size of the room.

Our specialty Seafood Restaurant; the Chui grill caters for Seafood lovers but we have other options for non seafood lovers. The chef is very flexible and he can always tailor make anything to suit your preferences. Do not hesitate to dine here in your next stay and we promise you will not be disappointed. You have the option of being in the Baobab Terrace with your little ones, the Chui deck for open air feel in privacy or the air conditioned section for exclusivity.

All the Chuis mentioned by name have been highly appreciated for going out of their ways to make your stay special and we look forward to welcome you again soon.

The level of cleanliness at this hotel was simply amazing. From the floors to the paintwork, to the grounds. The landscaping was amazing with a great variety of flora and fauna.  It was the first time for my family to stay here and we absolutely loved it.

Front Office Staff were extremely courteous and welcoming.  Right from the fresh juice with chunks of fruit served as a welcome drink; to the smooth check-in and great debriefing about the hotel; to the escort to the rooms where we were further debriefed on features in the room.

We stayed in the ground floor sea-facing rooms which were very, very spacious, very clean  and well equipped with the stuff one would expect. They each had a double bed and a single bed. The rooms also have an alcove which serves as a lounge area.

The Little Leopards kids club ladies, Mapenzi and Domtilla, were  great with the kids with interesting activities.

The chef was fantastic as he went out his way to make me a beef steak as I didnt eat sea food or pork which was on the ala carte menu.

Great job management!  Keep up the brilliant work. We will be back soon.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms are larger as instead of a balcony they have an alcove which serves as a lounge and opens up into a terrace.

Dear Wizzie K,
We are honored by your review noting that you are a senior reviewer having visited 44 cities since 2012. We consider your review very candid and objective more so because it was your first time here. We take pride in maintaining our property to the highest levels which is not always an easy task due to the salty air and humidity on the coast. Our tropical gardens are our pride and joy and are being described by those who know and appreciate as some of the best in Kenya. Our rooms cater for all requirements by offering twin beds , double beds and in your case with an additional single bed to for parents with a child.

Both the small and big Chuis appreciate your compliments on the check in process , ambience of the room and the entire resort.

We note you also enjoyed our personalized service from our Chef as we always strive to suit all tastes and individual requirements.

The little Leopards Club ensures you get to relax and enjoy your holiday while your children are in the good hands of Mapenzi and Domtilla. We have shared your compliments with them and we will continue to ensure your children have an better experience during your next stay with us.

We look forward to welcome you.

We had booked a three-night stay in one of the cottages at Leopard Beach only to find, to our very pleasant surprise, that we had been upgraded to one of the villas! The villa has its own little patio looking directly out over the ocean - probably the best views of any of their rooms!
Facilities in the room were fantastic though there were some things missing that would have made it better, such as the lack of shower caps and face towels in the bathroom. To make up for that, the bathroom has a jacuzzi as well as an outdoor shower to go with an indoor twin shower..
The food in the restaurants is good but not fantastic. However, the service throughout the hotel is terrific.
We'd definitely recommend the villa experience!

Room Tip: The villas are great value!

In my personal opinion i thought that leopard beach hotel was amazing, the pool is very nice to swim in, its very clean, good for children as there is a shallow end which is, 1.2 meters deep. The customer service is very good. If you order something either from room service or pool side it will b at your side within 10 minutes. If your going as a family its a great memorable experience for adults and children, as if your an adult with children and you would like some privacy you can send your children with an baby-sitter. Also if you want some strong tides leopard beach is the place, if you sit at the restaurant called "pizza n pasta" it is next to the beach so when the waves come they have to close down, but its safe as there is a barrier protecting the restaurant. The spa is very nice, the people in the spa treat you with care and take pride in doing there job. In addition to all the fun at the pool you can also form a team and play water polo as the ball is provided by leopard beach also the goals are too. On the beach there is volleyball, which is great fun playing with your friend or family. The rooms are very good, having stayed in a normal room and a cottage myself i can tell you that they are both very good, they all include wifi named after the room (e.g cottage 10) The televisions are also very good showing a variety of shows. The staff are very friendly.
So if I was to summarise my opinion on Leopard Beach Hotel i would say it was the best hotel I have ever stayed in. And is great fun and Luxurious.

5 Star rating for rooms

4.5 Star rating for food

5 star Rating for the pool and beach

So those are the three most important aspects of a hotel and leopard beach scores 14/15.

That shows that its the perfect place to stay on your holiday make sure you do. Also remember to not wear a cap in dining room as they will ask you to take it off.

Five words to explain Leopard Beach Hotel

Amazing : Luxurious : Fun : Memorable : Fantastic

Room Tip: If your travelling as a family i would go for a cottage as it is lovely and spacious. Or get 2 normal rooms with inter-conecting doors. More monkeys near reception. Also there are lots of spiders and 3 cats 2 black and 1 white.

Dear Rohan B,
What a wonderful review for the Chui team…..we are humbled by your compliments.
You experienced and sampled everything that Chui has to offer ; your review is a very candid one and a true reflection of what we aim to be at all times; thank you very much.
With the full moon over the Indian Ocean we usually have higher tides and we are happy you enjoyed this natural phenomenon in a perfect setting on the Ocean’s edge. The safety of our guests comes first hence the reason why we close the Pasta n’ Pizza restaurant and put a barrier during such higher tides.
We have gone through major refurbishments to maintain, upgrade and improve our product and enhance guest satisfaction by constant staff training.
The five words you have used to describe Leopard Beach Resort & Spa are simply to the point and we truly appreciate this and are proud to share your reflections with our Chui team

We all look forward to welcome you back soon for your next holiday on famous Diani Beach
