As you drive into Diani your heart sinks: another coastal strip of hotel after appartment block after hotel, the occasional shopping precinct, gift shops and so on. Then the tarmac road turns into a red top, the town is left behind, there is open country to your right and the occasional building hidden by vegetation to your left.
Finally you drive into the little paradise that is Kinondo Kwetu. A few stables and a paddock to your right, bushes trees and flowers all around, then the main building, then a beautiful sea front area shaded by tall trees and the sandy beach and the green and blue sea.
That was a good start.
The welcome from the managers Penny and Johnie was so warm that we thought there must be a case of mistaken identity. However, this warmth and friendliness is general.
Whoever is in charge of staff selection here is doing a wonderful job: all the staff, whether waiters, bar, gardening, security etc, were friendly, cheerful and efficient. And there are lots and lots of them!
The individual round houses are tastefully decorated, open up well to make the most of the sea breezes and have comfortable beds, plenty of space and good bathrooms.
Breakfast is taken in front of the main house on a terrace looking through the lawned shady area to the sea; lunch is taken in a beachside restaurant with breathtaking but shaded views of the ocean; dinner is often taken just with your partner, with wonderful attention from your private waiter and in a variety of places that are so romantic that even a heart of stone should melt. We felt like royalty!
Food is very good and varied, from very juicy steak, to tuna to lobster etc. The vegetables are cooked to perfection, slightly scrunchy and packed with flavour. Apart from the Kenyan white, all the wines we tasted were from South Africa and very good. In spite of eating three meals daily the food was light enough for us never to feel bloated and always hungry before the next meal. In fact, though living the good life as never at home, I didn't put on any weight.
The sea is remarkably warm and although it's very shallow and a bit rocky for a long way out, there is a concrete walkway under the sea to get you to where you can swim. Borrow swimming shoes from the poolmaster to guard against slipping. If you don't like sea swimming, the pool is huge and very warm.
You can walk along the beach without being pestered, which cannot be said of the nearby Diani! In fact, on morning and evening strolls we generally met nobody.
Although there are excursions, we only did one to the local sacred wood, a few minutes down the road, where the guide explained his tribe's customs and beliefs: an education stroll in an ancient wood that we found surprisingly enjoyable.
We didn't bother with other excursions: when you are in paradise, why go outside?
Most of the guests were from northern Europe: discreet, polite and the ideal people with whom to share a resort. In spite of Kinondo Kwetu being "all included" nobody seemed to be drinking very much; noblesse oblige!
Staff must number somewhere between 50 and 80 (at a guess). Everything worked very smoothly, so some-one in back office is working very hard. Many thanks to Penny and Johnie for making this the most memorable resort stay of our lives. It'll be hard act to follow!

We are not surprised to read the wonderful comments preceding this 'post'
Kinondo is a lovely place; guests are eclectic ie interesting; rooms (at least ours!) are luxurious; beach and gardens superb; food, varied and delicious...it's rare to find such an oasis, and it is managed beautifully by two special people.
Sue and I would not hesitate to recommend it...GO!

Me and my boyfriend spent two amazing weeks at Kinondo. We got recommended by friends and it was the luckiest thing ever, I travel all the the time for work and this is easiest one of the top 5 hotels I have ever visited.

To keep it simple, this place is nothing but perfect. The staff, the beautiful surroundings, amazing food, great management (they helped us book an unforgettable safari trip) and great activities.

This place is surely a piece of heaven!

Thank you

We had the most amazing time here for our honeymoon! The management is so kind and warm and made such an effort to make our trip special. Every night they would arrange a different place for us to have dinner (which was always delicious), whether on the beach or high up on a terrace. One lunchtime, we even ate in a beached fishing boat, which was a fun novel experience. The service was fantastic with nothing being too much trouble. The rooms are elegant and unfussy and the common parts are very stylishly decorated with African ornaments. We enjoyed spending time in the outdoor and indoor living rooms (of which there are a few) playing chess, having drinks or reading books from their library. This is a really special place.

went with as a family, 3 kids ( 6, 3 and 5 months) and a the best time ever. great food, very children friendly, but also perfect for couples. very flexible, trying to meet all our needs. rooms are so nicely furnished. just by the beach and the pool, with limited numbers of guest we did not have to walk and kids could go as they liked. beach and pool toys for the kids ( don't have to bring bags of stuff each time we go by the pool.... food was available all day long and at top quality they manage to make the place of paradise both for honeymooners and family well done, keep on going.

Room Tip: with children best is to ask a room at the ground level
