Food and service was excellent. We shared the seafood platter which was delicious. A very good bottle of red wine at a very reasonable price.

“A lovely restaurant shame about the food”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

This was our second time to Kenya & we stayed at the same hotel, anyway this time we decided to goto Ali barbour's cave restaurant as the reviews were in general ok & the pictures looked amazing ,as a rule we don't take notice of bad reviews on the hotels we have stayed at because we like to make our own minds up But I wished I'd taken notice of the bad reviews on this restaurant .
There was 4 of us in our party staying at the diani sea resort not even 5 mins down the road we asked to be collected at 8pm as this evening was a surprise birthday evening for my wife's best friend so the girls were all dressed up n looking good.we were collected at 9.30pm so not a good start.it had been raining on & off most of the day n evening.we got to the restaurant & it looked as good as the pictures showed really nice.we were seated under the open part of the restaurant & even though they had put a roof over the opening the temp roof had holes in it so was dripped on as well as wife's friends partner.it did stop raining half an hour after we got there so the roof was removed.
All looked nice the table was set out nicely the restaurant looked good it was set to turn out to be a nice evening even with the problems we had upto that point.the wife's best friend's partner surprised us all by getting down on one knee to propose which was excepted so it was turning out even more special.
We ordered what looked like great food 2 of us had the Madagascar steak ,my wife ordered the veal paillard & our friends partner ordered the Bombay chicken .The waitress we had was young but good she even turned the bottle as she served our drinks which you don't normally see done anymore unless you goto posh restaurants.
The food took must be 20 to 25 mins if not longer so not very good ,when it did come it looked nice & was set out nicely on the plate that was as good as it got for our food.the food was luke warm the plates were cold n the steak was so tough I'd still be trying to get through it now.The food was very, very poor & in the end we didn't even bother to try to eat it .we had to speak to the restaurant manager on duty to complain about the food it just wasn't good enough.my wife is a restaurant manager herself n would have been in deep trouble if she served that food to guests.the manager was very apologetic about the food n we were not charged for it.
When we booked the table we said it was someone's birthday so it would be a special night for us so after we had complained about the food the manager informed us that there was a birthday cake which was a nice gesture but when it came out & tasted it they shouldn't have bothered,it was the dries't cake we have ever tasted.

I have to say that the restaurant looked really nice n the atmosphere is very romantic ,the staff were friendly knew what they were doing (except the chefs if there was chefs)but our food was very poor would we go back No our hotel did romantic meals we should have booked that.

This restaurant is out of this world, Brilliant atmosphere, superb food and great staff. To dine in a cave is a wonderful experience and nothing can prepare you for your first visit. Dine in great surroundings whilst being able to view the stars

“A must in Mombasa”
Reviewed October 29, 2012

Had a lovely romantic meal here in August 2011. They pick you up and drop you back at your hotel, although we did have to wait quite long for the car to take us back. Recommend to anyone staying at Diani Beach not to bypass it.

“Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

Firstly you have to remember that you are eating in a cave on tables with candles, and yes it has electricity which is mainly being used to Microwave the meals – the food prices are higher than you would normally expect, but I suppose being a somewhat tourist experience they intend to make money when, and where they can, as it certainly is not for the food quality which I would consider as being average ut expensive. I have experienced the surroundings, but would not go back again as other places exist
