Called apartments, but really a boutique hotel with 9 rooms, Roi is located halfway up a hill on the edge of Assos. This means that there are spectacular views from the rooms and pool patio of the Ionian sea, isthmus and peninsula of Assos and parts of Kefalonia. It is an easy and quick (5 minutes) walk to the village centre along the quiet road and there are at least 4 shortcuts through olive groves and old pathways which add to the interest. The hotel is about 12 years old and architecturally impressive with patios, colourful plants and a modest swimming pool overlooking the sea with a countercurrent for swimming. This does mean that there are several steps so this must be taken into consideration if you have walking difficulties. You will not need transport if you remain in Assos but most will travel from the airport by hire car. The car park is difficult to negotiate but, if you have survived the descent from the mountain top to Assos though numerous hairpin bends (again with fantastic views which are reason enough for visiting), then your driving skills will get you into the car park. Nevertheless a small car would be best and you will have difficulty with a medium sized 4WD. Our room was "Olive" (number 9) and was fitted up to luxury hotel standards with a very comfortable bed, windows on 3 sides with a balcony over the sea and basic cooking facilities, although we never had the need to use them. The shower room is rather small but that did not pose a problem. There is also a ceiling fan, air-conditioning and a small but effective television (Sky News but no BBC) and complimentary cold drinks. Maria, the owner, welcomed us and she or her family are constantly available for help and advice. The room is a pleasant place to relax and the sea and white cliffs opposite are visible lying in bed! It is kept spotlessly clean every day as are the external areas. The swimming pool patio is also well fitted with cushions, loungers and chairs which are available in ample quantities. Although the wifi works well throughout the hotel the internet connection is poor. Pages load slowly so if you need to download large files it may be worth using the local 3G connection. Breakfast is served on the swimming pool patio either under cover or in the sun. The food is simple with fresh bread, eggs, Greek yogurt and honey, home cooked jams and variously cake, croissants or pancakes. Breakfast is a time to meet the other guests who were all couples giving a quiet and peaceful ambiance. Our fellow guests were good fun and mainly Dutch who spoke English well! There is also the option for snacks and cocktails on the patio although most preferred to go to the village centre for a drink. We stayed for 7 nights and booked via the internet as I don't think there are any British tour companies using this hotel. I am sure it is the best place to stay in Assos and you will have an enormously enjoyable time here.
