Lovely local taverna set in village square. The owner was excellent with explanations with regard to the food on the menu, portions were generous, hummus was excellent along with the pitta bread. Only downside was the attendance of the cats every evening, terribly sad as the population of cats is not controlled and you were their only source of food. That said, it is not the responsibility of the taverna to take care of them.

Platanos is one of our favourite restaurants on Kefalonia and we always make a point of visiting it for lunch at least twice during each holiday. Bearing in mind we have stayed as far away as Skala and Mousata during our last two holidays, you can judge for yourself just how highly we rate this place. Assos is beautiful to visit, made even more special by Platanos.

There's a great choice of delicious foods on the menu to whet the appetite, and when the owner is there you are always guaranteed an especially warm welcome and a wonderfully colourful introduction to the daily specials, invariably prefaced by the phrase "Many beautiful things". And many and beautiful they are too! Well worth sampling lots and we have never been disappointed. Just don't expect to eat and run. It's a place for a typically relaxed Greek lunch, with great food, a great location and great welcome.

We love Platanos, and along with the Olive Lounge in Lourdata, it is our most favourite places to eat on the island.

We just returned from two weeks staying in Assos. We found Platanos from the Trip Advisor site. This is a great place for families, laid back, informal and just the best place to watch the world walk past as you eat. The children enjoyed the attention of various cats and a small kitten.
The food is filling, fresh and appetising. There are some excellent choices, the lemon chicken with garlic and fresh fish are great. Some local dishes such as the Kefallonian meat pie were not to the children's taste, having rice, filo pastry and a strong taste of nutmeg, or cinnamon, and being served with chips, but they were exactly what Panos described.
Part of the experience here is just asking what the specials are, the answer takes several minutes. The choice of food is huge, although some dishes were not available. The creme brulee is excellent, though Panos says desserts are not a main focus. He will happily tell you about famous guests, down to remembering which table they sat at.
We enjoyed the cold dips and pitta bread so much that we shared a plate between four of us each time. The hot starters were not as good. The prices are the same as most other tavernas in Keffalonia. We were presented with complimentary shots of a firey lemon spirit and also desserts to share. The service is relaxed and meals last over several hours here.

I have visited this taverna 10 times over the years and it is still one of my favorites, great food, lovely atmosphere, good friendly service with a smile too. The salads are delicious, fill you up for the rest of the day!! The special omelette is very tasty and enormous, great value.

We stayed in Assos for two weeks and before we left on holiday we read the reviews for its Restaurants. We thought that one gushing reviewer who said that they did not eat anywhere else but the Platanos and still said it was the best restaurant in Assos was biased. However, having tried the others, I concur with this judgemment.

Forget to read the menu, listen to the owner passionately describing what is being cooked for that day. We dined there many times, and enjoyed suckling pig, buffalo, goat's kid etc etc. A road goes through the middle of the restaurant - but fortunately there is little traffic. It doesn't enjoy a sea view but more than makes up for this with its atmosphere (and a peripatectic violinist).

The service is efficient and friendly and the bill when it arrives is often accompanied by a complimentary dessert. We had a meal in the restaurant on my birthday and I was presented with a fabulous birthday cake, complete with sparklers, as a present. We immensely enjoyed every meal we had there and will definitely return in the future.
