We just returned from two weeks staying in Assos. We found Platanos from the Trip Advisor site. This is a great place for families, laid back, informal and just the best place to watch the world walk past as you eat. The children enjoyed the attention of various cats and a small kitten.
The food is filling, fresh and appetising. There are some excellent choices, the lemon chicken with garlic and fresh fish are great. Some local dishes such as the Kefallonian meat pie were not to the children's taste, having rice, filo pastry and a strong taste of nutmeg, or cinnamon, and being served with chips, but they were exactly what Panos described.
Part of the experience here is just asking what the specials are, the answer takes several minutes. The choice of food is huge, although some dishes were not available. The creme brulee is excellent, though Panos says desserts are not a main focus. He will happily tell you about famous guests, down to remembering which table they sat at.
We enjoyed the cold dips and pitta bread so much that we shared a plate between four of us each time. The hot starters were not as good. The prices are the same as most other tavernas in Keffalonia. We were presented with complimentary shots of a firey lemon spirit and also desserts to share. The service is relaxed and meals last over several hours here.
