Reviewed June 30, 2008

This was my first visit to Zante and I was impressed from the moment I stepped off the plane with the beauty of the island. It is green, verdant and lush with fruit hanging off trees at the side of the roads. We were ten ladies of differing ages travelling together, most of whom had not been to Zante before. Friends had recommended Tsilivi as they had visited the town on an excursion and been impressed by the beauty of the beach, the vibrancy of the area and the variety of shops, bars and restaurants.

The holiday was as cheap as chips and I wasn’t expecting luxury so I was pleasantly surprised by the apartment complex and the apartments themselves. We had four twin bedded rooms on the first floor and one double room on the ground floor, (which was a disappointment as we had actually booked two apartments for four people and one twin bedded room for two people all next to each other). The apartments were more than adequate for two people with a kitchen, small bathroom, bedroom with a decent size wardrobe with lots of hangers, and a large balcony. Obviously, this is a no-frills apartment block so don’t expect a TV, phone, microwave, toaster, etc and don’t expect an overhead shower, its hand-held which is a disappointment, but there was plenty of hot water. There is no lift and we had to haul our suitcases up the stairs ourselves, so I wouldn’t say this is a suitable venue for a person with disabilities.

There is a small pool with lots of sun beds and parasols and a pool bar which serves a limited but excellent, freshly cooked menu during the day. We particularly recommend the all-day Georgia Brekkie for 4.80 Euros. The beer – Amstell and Myphos – was 2.5 euros and extremely palatable. We had a wonderful time lazing by this pool each day and being right in the centre of town, we didn’t have far to walk when we headed out each evening for food and entertainment. Also, there is a supermarket next door which supplies everything you could need. The beach is about a ten minute walk away and is very long and pretty. There is a restaurant next to the beach called Moby Dicks which provided a really nice lunch.

Of the many restaurants we visited, the one that served the best beef stefado (8 euros) by far was the one directly opposite the supermarket. By and large none of us got ill, however, I would recommend insect repellent and have a plug in insect killer in your room as most of us got bitten and one lady had to go to the doctors her bites were so bad.

Our only disappointments with the holiday were that the security guard who patrolled the complex each evening was extremely rude and at the bottom of the steps there was an uneven grate area which was very unstable, covered by a mat, which could catch you unawares if you weren’t steady on your feet. Also, the apartment blocks in Tsivili are all open to non-residents so we had visitors from another hotel who were extremely loud and obnoxious (overweight middle aged women should not go skinny-dipping), but it didn’t spoil our enjoyment of the holiday.

Please don’t go to this resort if you want somewhere very Greek, rustic and quiet as, although most bars stop the entertainment at 12 midnight, some local bars (particularly Jokers Bar) remain noisy into the early hours. We had a great time because we were there to chill out during the day and enjoy our evenings out and if you are looking to do the same, you will really enjoy Tsilivi.
