Sunshine Corfu Hotel & Spa
Ranked #3 of 4 Hotels in Nissaki
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Spent a week at Sunshine Corfu in July 2013. Beautiful views and great staff. Building quite dated. Pools were great. Enjoyed two day trips out of the resort, one to Corfu Town and a second to Kassiopi. Green bus stop outside of hotel very easy way to get around

A close relative works for a well known travel company recommended this complex and asked for an impartial review of our stay. Generally speaking the hotel and stay was amazing, we were here from 5th - 19th July and were lucky enough to be upgraded from a bungalow to a main building sea view room ion the 7th floor.

Arrival/Hotel

Overall: 4.5

On arrival at the hotel guests are greeted with a cold drink which is a nice touch while your bags are being taken to your room, saving you having to carry your bags around even further after your flight. The hotel has a welcoming feel about it as soon as you arrive, the layout of the lobby area is both welcoming and cool with air conditioning on all day, a great place to chill out on the array of sofas in the lobby area.

You will notice on your way to the rooms that the décor in the main building could use some updating, especially in the corridors to the rooms and the relax areas on each floor. Carpets are old looking and a little gloomy but then you don’t pay to look at the corridors for the duration of the holiday!

The lifts are somewhat slow and always seem to go in the opposite direction to what you want before getting you to the part of the hotel you need to go to, we stayed on the 7th floor and the lift always went down to the 8th before taking us up to our selected 2nd floor, be prepared to wait if you want to use the lift and be prepared for it to be quite cramped.

Restaurants

Overall: 4.5

The layout of the main “Dionysus” restaurant is great, enough tables for everyone to sit together, sea view tables and large family tables. There are hot and cold drinks machines and as well as fizzy drinks there is a number of juice, water and wine machines to cater for all tastes. There is a beer pump on the far side of the main restaurant if you prefer.

The tables are constantly cleared and refreshed after each party has finished eating and always clean for new arrivals into the restaurant.

Food, this is probably the easiest part of the whole review, superb! The selection of foods each day are exceptional and very well cooked, you can really see that the hotel tries to cater for every food taste right down to the amazing selection of deserts and ice-creams.

Zorbas restaurant on site which needs to be booked a day in advance at 6pm (don’t be late as tables go very quick). The food here is a little limited with only a small number of things on the menu however the starters are self-serve and they have a great selection available.

Be wary that there are a large number of irritating wasps in the location of this restaurant for some reason.

Both times we ate in this restaurant we did have delicate stomachs after, maybe coincidence but for both of us to experience the same after eating different dishes was a little disconcerting. Just be aware of what you order as a lot of the food has a high oil content.

Mama Mia restaurant is also located on site and you definitely need to book early the day before for this one, get up to reception a little before 6pm to book your seats. There is little so say about this restaurant other than amazing!!! The food is superb and the uninterrupted views over Corfu bay are a real treat while eating.

The only downside is that it does get very hot in the restaurant and you do have to treck up a few stapes to reach it but aside from that, by far the best eatery on site!

Rooms

Overall: 4.0

Whilst the rooms in the main building (aside from the swim up rooms) are quite basic, they are comfortable. I wold definitely say go for a room in the main building rather than one of the bungalows which are located further away from the main complex. Each room has a reasonable large balcony, air conditioning and a fully equipped bathroom with hairdryer.

It would have been nice to have a fridge stocked with a few cold drinks aside from the bottle of water you get on arrival into your room but this is minor, the rooms serve the purpose they are there for and that is to sleep and hide away in when it gets too hot.

Pools

Overall: 5.0

The chill out pool is exceptional, it is accessed easily on level 8 of the hotel, has a small bar at the far side (that doesn’t serve alcohol other than beer) but a good selection of juices and fizzy drinks. The sunbeds around the pool are well positioned and the bridge over the pool provides some shade whilst in the pool if you need it. The animation team do not bother you in this pool as it is exactly what it says, a chill out quiet pool.

The animation pool is vastly different from the chill out pool, the animation team are here all day long and keeping both adults and kids entertained with various activities. If you are looking for more fast paced entertainment while you sunbath and swim then this is the pool for you.

Beach

Overall: 3.5

There is a small beach area for this hotel, if you want sunbeds here then you definitely have to get up early and claim one. Mainly rocky, pebbles rather than sand but there is a small sandy area of beach further along, but with limited access to the water.

You can do various water sports from the beach but be wary about renting boats as these can be very expensive.

In addition the beach is a long walk, or slow lift ride down/up to and from the main complex, take this into account when you need drinks ets as t will be irritating when you need one.

Staff

Overall: 2.5/3.0

This was the one section that we had serious mixed feelings about, there were a number of staff that excelled in making the stay an enjoyable one and these included;
Nina, a trainee on the main bar
Nadia, main bar
Alexandros, main bar
David, restaurants
Reception staff
Cleaning staff
Selena, animation team
Amis, animation team
Anna, guest services manager

I would say that the waiting staff in the restaurants by far build the best rapport with the guests. They are all polite and willing to help with anything you need during your stay.

The majority of the bar staff are always polite and try to accommodate your every need, with one exception, the barman Michalis has a tendency to come across rude, judgemental and at times unhelpful or at least irritated when he needs to serve you and he is in the middle of something. He makes little effort to engage in conversation and portrays an air of superiority over the guests. Basically making you feel uncomfortable at times and in general like you would prefer to be served by someone else. He definitely contributed to a large degree for the lower rating of this portion of the holiday.

General

Overall: 4.0

Whilst the two week stay here was both enjoyable and relaxing, the hotel caters more directly for its French guests. All French guests seem to be highlighted by the Red arm bands they wear, white for French children. This seems to enable the animation team to easily identify and socialise with these guests. All other nationalities have Yellow wrist bands and there is a clear definition between the two and how they are treated by the staff and animation team, almost resembling the divide between whites and Negros back in the mid 1900’s. It almost felt like there should be separate parts of the hotel for the reds and yellows.

The hotel is some distance from other more active areas of Corfu so if you are looking for total relation then this is the place. You can go into Corfu town on the bus for 2.20 euros and up to Kassiopi (well worth it) for 1.30 euros.

There is a lovely restaurant called Taverna Roumelli outside and down to the left of the hotel which is well worth a visit. Book if you can as it does get busy, and try the Saganaki (fried cheese similar to Halloumi) and if you like Lamb then their home made Kleftiko is an absolute must.

As for excursions, the day trip to Albania is worth every penny, a long day but one of the most enjoyable. Albania is also very cheap, a packet sof 20 cigarettes is around £1.30 (1.80 euro) and a glass of wine will set you back about the same.

Room Tip: Choose a main hotel room rather than a bungalow, sea views are amazing and it iseasier to get from o...

We have just arrived home (19th July) after 1 week in the Sunshine Vacation, As all other reviews it has truly stunning views across the bays.

1. We found the food generous and abundant and of good quality, with a lot of variety - if you want spam, sausage and chips - stay home! - The food is in Corfu!! so they do it their way (don't understand people who miss this point!) there are multiple places to eat and the variety is very good. You get to eat once in the Italian Restaurant (mamma mias and the Greek restaurant, although the receptionist was having one of those nights and would not let us book the Greek restaurant! Mamma Mia's was OK, nothing special food wise (compared to an Italian Restaurant but nothing adverse either)

2. The hotel splits up the people with Children from the Couples very well, with a large pool for the kids and parents, and a quiet pool for those that want to swim in peace. Both pools are cleaned regularly. The Beach is stones and pebbles, and very little sand, but the water beautiful and so refreshing and Warm!

3. The hotel entertainment is for the French guests, and they do not mix with the British, although children generally have no barriers to put up!.

4. We stayed on the 5th floor (about half way up\down) we found the room clean, basic but very good, although the bed is very hard (that is personal taste though and not a reflection on the hotel), the lifts are another matter, through out our stay one of the lifts was not working, so we walked up and down stairs frequently - not good in the heat.

5. This is not a Hotel for those that have difficulty with mobility due to the large number of steps, and the getting from top to bottom, likewise unless you're fit and healthy don't stay in the Bungalows as there is a lot of walking and steps to be done.

6. The Bar Staff, Dinning waitresses and all other service people are of the highest level.

7. 4 Stars if Lift was working, Better beach, and entertainment for English Guests.

8. We booked with First Choice, the Rep is a waste of space, we book the Albanian day out and this was excellent every thing else she offered was double the price necessary

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel. An Absolute must is take sturdy beach shoes. Travel by the local buses, th...

7 days at the Sunshine Vacation Club Corfu were simply excellent, my 8 year old daughter had a great time at the kids club, my 16 year old son had things to do and had a great time. the food was great, the place was safe and all round comfortable atmosphere. We had a poolside suite wish meant the kids had their own room with bathroom with an adjoining door to the master bedroom. this made the holiday perfect. lounge by the pool... get to hot and dip in the water, lay on your own private terrace.. what else can i say? except that i would go back in a heartbeat and have a suite again.... only downside is that you have to leave.

Room Tip: go for a suite on the poolside..

We stayed at the hotel - my wife and I and two children (16 month and 4 year old) - in a family room in the main building. The room was clean and spacious having a great seaview and balcony, airconditioning worked well, and bathroom straightforward. rooms include a fridge, safe, and additional linen.

The staff were excellent and unobtrusive, the entertainers entertained and got every-one in to the spirit including our four year old. The kids club was great (offering 9:30 until 1230 and 2:30 until 5 amusements.

The hotel is built on a hill but very accessible in that slopes and lifts exist for all levels and its possible to avoid steps if that's an issue.

The relaxation pool (which is enormous) and the activity pool (with baby pool area at one end) are exactly as described.

Food I have to say is amazing - we couldn't figure out how they kept such a high standard with the quantity produced.

It is very international as a hotel, attracting guests from all over Europe.

Customer is at the centre of their thinking and behaviour - that is plain to see from the moment you enter - and the rest really follows that.

I cannot find a single negative to say about our stay, the way we were treated, the food, the optional entertainment or relaxation areas, the hotel beach, hotel excursion options ... there is a great deal to do at this resort and an on-going schedule of daily stuff to keep children and adults entertained or you can just opt out and chill by the bar, the pools, the beach ... just great!

Room Tip: we had a room on level 2 - (level 1 being reception (at the top) and 8 being the bottom. but it app...

The title says it all, absolutely stunning views and nice clean pools. We stayed for a long weekend and wouldn't have wanted to be there any longer. I survived on gherkins and chips which was the safest bet the rest of the food was bland and not particularly tasteful. Our room was small and dark, the only means of day light came through a single balcony door. The balcony was not much larger than a small ikea kitchen table. The room was very out dated, very poorly decorated and showing signs of wear and tear. The bed was made daily but the dirty glasses put back on the side for use the next day however the rest of the hotel was clean. The staff were nice and polite except for one of the reception staff who was plain arrogant and rude. 90% of the entertainment team would not even look at you if you were not French, a very blatant prejudice practised throughout the hotel. I would like to return to Corfu but not to this hotel.
We booked the the shower room for use before leaving and was given 30 mins for three us to get to the room, shower, dry hair, and return the key to reception. Ten minutes was spent waiting for the lift . Dead on 30 mins they were ringing us to say our time was up, I could go on !!!! We have travelled all over the world this being our third trip this year and its the first time we have ever had to write a negative review.

I can't say we would stay here again. The rooms were shocking....unpainted wardrobe doors (undercoat but no paint?), moldy showers and just generally extremely dated! he hallway carpets had bleach stains all over them and the marble floor in our room was filthy when we checked in. I am unsure why but every balcony (despite lovely views) had a large concrete block on it. The rooms were very big but really needed refurbishment. The view from our room was lovely.

The staff were very helpful and accommodating - they did everything they could to help us. Food was good (as per standard all inclusive it was very much quantity over quality!). Entertainment was absolutely dire - so bad it was hilarious. The greek dancing was so bad I almost complained (I am half greek and I was embarrassed that people would believe that the dancers on stage were doing greek dancing.....they were not!). All entertainment seemed to be catered to the French and the animation teams were very cheesy and painful. Still, we had a laugh watching!

No problems getting sun loungers (other than some freaks who got up at 6am to put towels on). We didn't bother with the beach as one trip down showed us how horrible it was and the lower pool was so noisy with the animation team screaming things out constantly. I realize this review makes us sound really boring but seriously we are young and don't mind some noise but constant french yelling drove us crazy!

Be aware that to get a cab from this hotel you have to order from reception (its too hard to get out of he hotel and flag one down). Consequently you pay an absolute premium!!! Its was E30 for a 10 min cab ride (the same ride back was about E10).

All in all the hotel was fine, food was plentiful and largely very good. Swimming pools were nice and facilities were adequate. Its more like 2 star rooms with 3 star facilities. Good if you get a deal but be aware of the sheer crowdedness (and we were not there in high season).

Room Tip: We went for main building, level two (same level as the restaurant) and it was really handy.
