“Great hotel and beautiful views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2011

My husband and I stayed here for a few days in June - it was fabulous. Amazing views, lovely and spacious room, very comfortable bed, delicious food - especially the breakfasts and the salads at dinner. The staff were also very friendly. We stayed in one of the rooms built into the hillside with the most amazing view of the sea and mountains. The only negative thing about this hotel is the lift......we often had to walk up to the main hotel building due to it taking too long to arrive, or not working! Aside from the minor annoyance of the unreliable lift I would fully recommend this hotel for a relaxing holiday.

We go to this hotel before one month. It was fantastic!!! We stay for one week .everything was excellent. The animation program was fantastic .John and his band
with the blond girl played very nice live songs for us in the pool bar. Also the breakfast and the food in the restaurant were excellent. We will go again soon!!

In our opinion this hotel does not deserve it's 5* rating. Thomson etc need to tell customers in advance about the access to rooms being via steps or slopes of the very slow lift. Admitted you can use the buggy but even that takes time and certainly is not door to door from the room we had. We paid for sea view but like so many others have mentioned we had a big tree and roof tops mailny. We do not expect to queue for an outside dinner table in a 5* hotel despite going to dinner after 8.45pm as recommended by the management. Too many wasps - hotel needs to get this sorted - it is most unpleasant. Various salad dishes etc need to be labelled as most contain some sort of meat - not good for a vegetarian! Lots of smiley management everywhere but when we did complain about the evening seating arrangements suddenly the smiley lady told us it was not her fault and they just didn't have enough tables for all 500 guests to be seated!!! Nice pool and all very clean but very uncomfortable sunbeds and grotty towels which are thin and white and can only be changed very 3 days! Drinks are very expensive - suggest you get your own from the local supermarket and although the hoitel provide a kettle and cups you need to provide your won coffee or again pay very highly. All in all this hotel has a lot to offer but needs to get these issues resolved to truly match the 5* rating.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel between August 25th-September 5th and we both had a lovely time here.

Here is my brief review of points to consider:

All the staff are excellent, friendly, helpful, english speaking. We didn't encounter any bad service....not once!

The rooms are very nice but they shouldn't make you pay for a safe or tea & coffee.

The cleaners will find it odd if you don't want your room cleaned, one came and spoke with us at 17:00 to check if everything was ok. On the plus side they are all so friendly.

The hotel is built on a hill, try and get a room on reception level as being down near the beach means a long way up to dinner each night.

The pool area is the most relaxing and has great views, you have to be pro-active to get a good sunbed spot but we never struggled to find a couple free.

The bar serves great tasty food that is reasonably priced and has big portions. It is also a romantic place in the evening but the drinks prices are too expensive.

The buffet restaurant serves nice food but not 5* in my opinion. I found the desserts odd, the meat often dry/over-cooked and the breakfast pancakes hard. The selection is wide but you won't find yourself saying 'This is delicious!'.

The beach is dirty & smelly, whilst snorkelling we saw a tyre, some piping and plastic bags. Compare this to the Carribean where we have snorkelled and you will be let down, we saw some fish too! If the surrounding busniesses clubbed together they could sort it out and make it much nicer.

The other facilities including the gym, tennis courts, indoor pool & sauna I found good and great for some free things to do.

The hotel is good in asking you not to change your bedding/towels too frequently to help the enviroment. We need to have less of a damaging effect on the enviroment as tourists.

We did the Theo Boat trip which was great fun and adults only, we even went to mainland Greek as part of the trip.

Go to the local shop at the hotel main entrance and buy beer, water etc you will save a fortune. We brought a bottle of rum duty free and just drank rum & coke each night on the balcony.

If you have a fear of insects don't go to Corfu, there were wasps everywhere! The first night we sat outside for dinner...whole meal ruined by 2 persistent wasps. The staff tried hard with smokers and stuff but it didn't work. Literally sit by the pool - Wasps. Go for lunch - Wasps. Go to the beach - Wasps. Go to sleep at night and dream -Wasps!
(By the way if the hotel reads this review I saw 3 nests on my way down in the faniculor, take care of these and you may save your guests some trouble)

Overall this place is amazing in terms of the decor, scenery, service and the weather. All my friends said they were jealous when they saw the pictures. If your a couple looking for a relaxing child free holiday and your not looking to go partying then book here and you will not regret it.

We stayed here over the Greek Easter holiday on an all inclusive package.

We had a room over looking the Ionian sea and the beach, adjacent to the monorail teleiferic.

The rooms offer a fantastic view, are well equipped and large.

The food is excellent, the serice is very well done and the staff are always ready to serve.

A car is a must if you plan to tour the island because this hotel is about 10KM west from the town center.

The only downside to the place is the distance to the beach which is a long walk down or a wait and ride on the monorail which has a limited capacity and moves very slow.

The infinity swimming pool is fantastic. Large, clean and well maintained.

The nature around the hotel is something you do not find in the city.

The Grand Mediterraneo is correctly referenced as 5 star. We returned yesterday having spent the first week of September; the weather was a consistent 30-32 C with a pleasant sea breeze. Our contemporary room had a stunning sea view - just perfect. The aircon was silent and efficient, but it was lovely to open the door in the morning to listen to the sea too!
The swimming pool is c50 meters and a good tempreature - great for a few laps to try to keep off the pounds! The food in the main buffet restaurant was excellent - a very wide selection at breakfast - freshly squeezed orange juice, good coffee and crispy bacon. Dinner was of the same high standard - a feast of various and numerous salads, local dishes and numerous meats and fish from the grill.
The main entertainment was provided by a jazz /current music pair D n'A who were very good - so much so we bought one of their CDs!.
The Eros bar was a liitle pricey - €12 for a cocktail but it is a 5 star hotel. The Spa is also on the expensive side but well worth the treat.
One of the nicest thing, and new this season, is the couples theme i.e. no children. The was very welcomed as we dontwant to listen to someone's little Daisy or Jack jumping in and out of the pool or screaming because they are not allowed a 6th ice cream!
Will we go back - yes - definitely!

Room Tip: Thompson latedeals provided a good package for us

Situated in a quiet location on the West Coast and about 20-30 mins from Corfu Town .

No Champagne on arrival (though promised in the brochure!), but quickly led to our room. The view was meant to be sea view, but this was mostly obscured by the building roof in front and tree to the right (Room 410). However it is clear that a lot of the rooms have similar restricted views due to the layout of the hotel being built in the side of the mountain. However to be fair we could still see the sea!

The hotel is well laid out, looked after and looks amazing. The rooms are spacious with a marble wet room style bathroom, that is equally large. Balconies too have plenty of room and are east facing so you have the sun for most of the day.

The pool is large though strangely designed in that you have to 'hurdle' over the inner pool wall to climb into it. Either that or walk around the pool and use the steps into the pool from the other side. There are plenty of sun lounges, though this can get busy towards mid day. In all the pool area is quiet and peaceful for relaxing - especially as it is meant to be couples only, though we did see children from time to time!

The wasp issue mentioned by other guests is a problem, but certainly not a major problem. The hotel does its best to provide smoke lanterns on tables and wasp traps in trees. You can always practice your flip flop swipe before you travel for maximum protection! However offset that with the quiet hillsides and tranquil rural setting and to be fair it is us humans that are trespassing on their land!

The beach is the only real let down of the hotel. Poorly maintained, we nick named it the 'ashtray'. It has a Blue Flag rating...supposedly and According to the posters, but I doubt it would pass any awards these days. Cigarette buts and litter are everywhere, and it even has its own quaint stagnant swamp near by! It is a shame as it has a nice cosy setting, a hotel chain bar/restaurant near by with toilets, drinks, meals, ice creams and a fresh water shower on the beach.

Access to your room from the beach is either a brisk walk up the hillside steps or the funicular. Now everyone mentions how slow it is, but to be fair on a scorching hot day and the prospect of climbing all those steps I have no problem with it! Once you understand how it works, you can time your lift ride especially if you are on the beach. However be warned!! Despite this hotel being 'adults only', there are still many people staying there who cannot count up to 16 (Honestly!) - The maximum number of people people in the lift! Politeness is fine and shuffling up to fit an extra couple of people in the lift is ok, but I am not sure how many extra people it can take before it snaps and plunges down the mountain!

Be prepared to explain to people who cant count that ''full means full''...teach yourself these words in as many foreign languages as possible before you go!! - ''Sorry vous ne pas le compteur , mais les élévateur c'est repli''. is the French words for starters...!

The main restaurant has an excellent breakfast selection. Though I have seen better selections from 5 star in the far east, this is as explained in the title adequate for 'European 5 star'. However expect diluted juices (Some to the point of pure water! , no omelette choice and tinned food (Especially mushrooms).

Evening Dinner meals have a wide choice, (Salads, Cooked Meals, cold platters) and with themed nights to give a varied choice (Asian night etc.). Again whilst the food is well cooked and there is ample choice, this fall short of 5 star quality standard. The choice of vegetables remains the same every night, though sometimes cooked differently. We had fun playing spot the spinach...you have it every night in some sort of shape or form, be it on its own or 'hidden in pies!' The 'rustic vegetables' selection also resembles something scraped from a forest floor! Don't get me wrong here the food is not inedible, just that the cooked food is often eclectic and does not follow the meat dishes on offer.

They also have a wide range of desserts too...so long as you like them with sticky whipped cream. Their Baklava is a let down - especially for a Greek Island. It is cheap bought produce - spongy gooey and lacking nuts, flavour and the outer pastry crunch.

Buying drinks on an evening with the meal was also let down. Other people have commented on this and I agree. Buying even a bottle of water for €3.60 when it costs just 30 cents in the supermarket is a little insulting. This kind of 'fleecing the captive audience' is rife by hotels, but if this hotel wants to stand out it should know better.

Finally - there is still a ''smoke where I like and don't give a damn who I offend policy'' in Greece, expect to be gassed and choked at meal times by the inconsiderate few who still think it is ''charming, sociable? and 'school kid' cool to light up, while everyone is trying to enjoy their dinner.

Staff were excellent and very attentive, helpful and willing to please. There are always plenty of them around and the cleaners also were thorough and reliable. Beds made each day and room tidy when we returned.

In all the hotel is very good, I would return and I would recommend to friends and family. That said it has it quirks and way of doing things and despite the beach, it is a clean, tranquil place to relax and unwind. Yes there are better 5 star hotels elsewhere in the far east etc. but by European standards this hotels is very well run.
